Book excerpt: "I gain a strong sense of interconnectedness and belonging when I look at her work. There is a universality and humanity Joy finds every time." --Sheree Fitch Since 1972, Joy Laking has lived and painted in Nova Scotia, capturing beauty in watercolours, oils, and acrylics in many locations. She sees beauty in both the usual and the unusual. The Painted Province lets the reader see Nova Scotia through an artist's eyes. Here, Joy has grouped some of her favourite paintings into forty regions, each with her personal commentary. In each of the regions, one of the images will have its GPS coordinates. You are encouraged to bring this book along in your travels to find some of the places where she created paintings. When you discover the exact spot, please take a photo. Then email it to her and she will post it on her website. Joy constantly finds ways to enhance her own creativity. Every year, she paints in unfamiliar countries, such as Bolivia, Ghana, India, and Sri Lanka, to return home to see Nova Scotia through fresh eyes. Joy has also written a play, children's books, articles about rural life, and work for the CBC.
Book Synopsis Duchamp Accelerated by : Julian Jason Haladyn
Download or read book Duchamp Accelerated written by Julian Jason Haladyn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marcel Duchamp is today considered one of the most significant 20th century artists worldwide. His far-reaching influence is visible within a variety of areas of creative production and critical inquiry, extending far beyond the world of art. Duchamp Accelerated: Contemporary Perspectives examines Duchamp and his reception through a series of essays that explore the ongoing impacts of his life, ideas and practice on innumerable fields of research, practice and study. Contributors include art historians, curators, artists and writers who offer histories and approaches that actively challenge dominant narratives on Duchamp, discussing his influences from a multitude of different disciplinary and cultural perspectives. Written in the specific context of the 21st century, this volume situates the artist firmly in a global context and highlights the numerous influences from theories of perception and the writings of Georges Bataille, to travels in Argentina that shaped his ideas and art. This volume pushes current understandings of Duchamp beyond existing limits by accelerating the histories, encounters, dialogues and interpretations of his practice, with a focus on contemporary perspectives. The 'accelerated' Duchamp that emerges from this analysis is one who not only speeds up notions of art in relation to cultural and political histories, but one whose practice is actively informing future developments in the worlds of art and material culture today.

Book Synopsis The History of Art in Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasty by : Li Shi
Download or read book The History of Art in Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasty written by Li Shi and published by DeepLogic. This book was released on with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the volume of “The History of Art in Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasty ” among a series of books of “Deep into China Histories”. The earliest known written records of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC, from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC) and the Bamboo Annals (296 BC) describe a Xia dynasty (c. 2070–1600 BC) before the Shang, but no writing is known from the period The Shang ruled in the Yellow River valley, which is commonly held to be the cradle of Chinese civilization. However, Neolithic civilizations originated at various cultural centers along both the Yellow River and Yangtze River. These Yellow River and Yangtze civilizations arose millennia before the Shang. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. The Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BC) supplanted the Shang and introduced the concept of the Mandate of Heaven to justify their rule. The central Zhou government began to weaken due to external and internal pressures in the 8th century BC, and the country eventually splintered into smaller states during the Spring and Autumn period. These states became independent and warred with one another in the following Warring States period. Much of traditional Chinese culture, literature and philosophy first developed during those troubled times. In 221 BC Qin Shi Huang conquered the various warring states and created for himself the title of Huangdi or "emperor" of the Qin, marking the beginning of imperial China. However, the oppressive government fell soon after his death, and was supplanted by the longer-lived Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). Successive dynasties developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the emperor to control vast territories directly. In the 21 centuries from 206 BC until AD 1912, routine administrative tasks were handled by a special elite of scholar-officials. Young men, well-versed in calligraphy, history, literature, and philosophy, were carefully selected through difficult government examinations. China's last dynasty was the Qing (1644–1912), which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, and in the mainland by the People's Republic of China in 1949.Chinese history has alternated between periods of political unity and peace, and periods of war and failed statehood – the most recent being the Chinese Civil War (1927–1949). China was occasionally dominated by steppe peoples, most of whom were eventually assimilated into the Han Chinese culture and population. Between eras of multiple kingdoms and warlordism, Chinese dynasties have ruled parts or all of China; in some eras control stretched as far as Xinjiang and Tibet, as at present. Traditional culture, and influences from other parts of Asia and the Western world (carried by waves of immigration, cultural assimilation, expansion, and foreign contact), form the basis of the modern culture of China.

Book Synopsis The Language and Iconography of Chinese Charms by : Alex Chengyu Fang
Download or read book The Language and Iconography of Chinese Charms written by Alex Chengyu Fang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth description and analysis of Chinese coin-like charms, which date back to the second century CE and which continued to be used until mid 20th century. This work is unique in that it provides an archaeological and analytical interpretation of the content of these metallic objects: inscriptive, pictorial or both. As the component chapters show, these coin-like objects represent a wealth of Chinese traditional folk beliefs, including but not limited to family values, social obligations and religious desires. The book presents a collection of contributed chapters, gathering a diverse range of perspectives and expertise from some of the world’s leading scholars in the fields of archaeology, religious studies, art history, language and museology. The background of the cover image is a page from Guang jin shi yun fu 廣金石韻府, a rhyming dictionary first published in the ninth year of the Kangxi Reign (1652 CE). The metal charm dates back to the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE), depicting two deities traditionally believed to possess the majic power of suppressing evil spirits. The stich-bound book in the foreground is a collection of seal impressions from the beginning of the 20th century. Its wooden press board is inscribed da ji xiang 大吉祥 by Fang Zhi-bin 方質彬 in the year of bing yin (1926 CE).
