Book excerpt: Part memoir and part social criticism, The Glass Closet addresses the issue of homophobia that still pervades corporations around the world and underscores the immense challenges faced by LGBT employees. In The Glass Closet, Lord John Browne, former CEO of BP, seeks to unsettle business leaders by exposing the culture of homophobia that remains rampant in corporations around the world, and which prevents employees from showing their authentic selves. Drawing on his own experiences, and those of prominent members of the LGBT community around the world, as well as insights from well-known business leaders and celebrities, Lord Browne illustrates why, despite the risks involved, self-disclosure is best for employees—and for the businesses that support them. Above all, The Glass Closet offers inspiration and support for those who too often worry that coming out will hinder their chances of professional success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A charming personal account, accompanied by nearly 100 illustrations, that underscores how owls and other birds enrich our lives.”—Kirkus Reviews Winner of the National Outdoor Book Award For a quarter of a century, Tony Angell and his family shared the remarkable experience of closely observing pairs of western screech owls that occupied a nesting box outside the window of their forest home. The journals in which the author recorded his observations, and the captivating drawings he created, form the heart of this compelling book—a personal account of an artist-naturalist’s life with owls. Angell’s extensive illustrations show owls engaged in what owls do—hunting, courting, raising families, and exercising their inquisitive natures—and reveal his immeasurable respect for their secret lives and daunting challenges. Angell discusses the unique characteristics that distinguish owls from other bird species and provides a fascinating overview of the impact owls have had on human culture and thought. He also offers detailed scientific descriptions of the nineteen species of owls found in North America, as well as their close relatives elsewhere. Always emphasizing the interaction of humans and owls, the author affirms the power of these birds to both beguile and inspire. “Endearing…provides a lot of fascinating information about these reclusive creatures.”—The New York Times Book Review “Angell writes (and draws) with the absolute authority of one who has studied, rehabilitated, lived with and loved the animals his whole life.”—The Wall Street Journal “Steeped in the tradition of Alexander Wilson and John James Audubon, it blends taxonomy, ornithology, biogeography and autobiography.”—Times Literary Supplement

Book excerpt: Maxwell Unger has always loved the night. He used to do brave things like go tramping through the forest with his Gran after dark. He loved the stories she told him about the world before the Destruction--about nature, and books, and the silver owls. His favorite story, though, was about the Owl Keeper. Max's Gran is gone now, and so are her stories of how the world used to be. The forest is dangerous, the books Gran had saved have been destroyed, the silver owls are extinct, and Max is no longer brave. But when a mysterious girl comes to town, he might just have to start being brave again. The time of the Owl Keeper, Gran would say, is coming soon.

He is on the journey of a lifetime as one chapter of his existence comes to a close and a new one begins. Omniseed takes you through the life of Roy, a plumber whose life was rich, not necessarily with money but rather with something worth far more than that: people and love. Roy touched the lives of family, friends, and even strangers, often without knowing it. Omniseed tells the story not only from Roy's perspective but also from the people whose lives he has impacted. It will give the reader thought to pause and consider the seeds they sow in their own life and how those seeds can be far-reaching for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the cycles of the great season of creativity, we are sometimes given a rare and precious gift. This season, that gift is You Can't Trust Your Own Mind, by David French PhD., a book about how to excavate your deep, true identity and stop the fear and alienation automatically and reactively imposed by the mind. Inspired by discipline, experience, understanding, and compassion, his words embrace a deeper truth with the reader and lead to common ground where we can all see what is real and what is not: “myself and the machine”, “your self and the machine”. With his self-disclosing style, he shows us how to find emotional shelter when we are injured: how to be truthful when we want to lie; how to build trust when we feel alone, and misunderstood. He helps us discover triggers that alarm the machine and cause swift destructive actions. He finds the power concealed within our own vulnerability, and gives us the courage to own our own pain. He gives us tools for more satisfying relationships, hope for self fulfillment, and permission to be who we are without games, fears, and self-sabotaging rituals of the ancient reactive “machine”. He shows each of us how to accept the “machine” that vigilantly and perpetually serves us with a singular directive: to monitor, protect, and destroy all perceived threats, before the deep sacred self is even aware of them. What others are saying about this book: Through Dr. French's Personal balance Therapy, he brings together all the parts of what makes each one of us unique, and sets the reader on the path of wholeness. - D.C. Hadden, Psy.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist This book can save ones sanity, relationships, maybe even one's life. Patients of mine commonly arrive in a state of despair and depression, losing all hope, faith, trust and love. Readers may be skeptical to try yet another book top better understand the hurt within, but believe this book will open one's eyes and direct one to experiencing inner piece. To be able to see the pasterns of our actions that lead us to heartache and frustration is eye opening and allows the reader to understand the “automatic self”. Dr. French teaches that by modifying and reeducating the “Machine” that allows us to achieve a balance with our “real self.”The descriptions were right on target. The reader will find this book encouraging, even those that may feel that they are too far gone to be helped .many readers will find themselves, turning back to this book again and again when they are in need of a “reality check.”They will find healing in the pages within. - James S. Pratty, M.D. Psychiatrist Medical Director, Azimuth Mental Health Associates What I love about Dr. French and his book is how real. This book is great for all health workers, educators, rehabilitation staff and individuals addressing their own issues. His spirituality and sensitivity is great. - Richard L Rosenberg, PhD. Lead vocational coordinator, Whittier Union High School District.

Book excerpt: Kenny and Johnny were well known around the neighborhood as trouble. The boys spent much of their time stealing from stores, breaking into abandoned buildings and other forms of notorious entertainment. However, as do most forms of reputation, Ken-ny and Johnny's history caught with them. They were accused of a crime they did not commit. Kenny and Johnny knew they had to run. Kenny and Johnny heard some men talking about abandon houses being demolished to make way for a freeway. One of the men discussed how in a few of the houses being torn down, money was found. This piqued Kenny and Johnny's interest and soon they were on a bike trip in which they would never forget. Once Kenny and Johnny found "the house", they began their search for treasure. Their efforts were interrupted by a dangerous man, Jazz. He held the boys "hostage" until he could find a way to make his own escape. Jazz left the boys tied-up when Jazz went to steal a car for his get-away. Kenny and Johnny knew they would be dead when Jazz returned to the house. The boys broke free just as Jazz returned with the stolen car. They couldn't run, but hid in a secret room below the floor of the house. Jazz, beyond angry, doused the kitchen with gasoline, lit the house on fire and left. Johnny and Kenny struggled to escape the flames and barely fled to safety. The experience brought the boys to a personal crossroads. Kenny and Johnny drifted apart. Johnny eventually decided he could not live in the manner he and Kenny were accustomed. After contemplating suicide, Johnny turned his life around to one of positive direction. Over the years, Kenny continued in search of the "easy mark". Kenny's choice led to his death. Precious Little is a story of adventure, choices, and change. It demonstrates the possibility of change and the consequence of not taking the opportunity of the transformation.

Asaro The Sacred Chronicles: Wild Dreams is a dark fantasy that is uniquely written with an odd sense of humor. A young singer raised in a small town tries to make it to fame and fortune. His destiny for the spotlight is suddenly changed into a journey that leads him to a remote hotel in the middle of nowhere with guests and an innkeeper who is suspected of being some kind of shape-shifter. Maurice LaShore is an owner of a small music label in the sleepy town of Darlington who sends his new client, Dustin Mendez, on a simple, but mysterious assignment to an old, shaggy hotel called Yu Ji Cove to pick up a young woman by the name of Lydia Delino. During Dustin’s stay, he stumbles upon a terrifying secret about all the inhabitants at Yu Ji Cove: a secret that is brought to light and causes the whole hotel to burn for it. After the fire, Dustin finds himself on the run from hunters while he is in desperate search for Lydia Delino. Filled with werewolves, were-cats, hunters, possessions and more, this novel explores another world beyond the ordinary that will either destroy Dustin or save him from total despair.
