Book excerpt: The title 'Other side of the Last Hill' illustrates that there is always an unseen side to our vision, but it could be unveiled by deep contemplation, and the poems are the path. There are seasonal poems in the book which evoke the different states of beauty that echo the life cycle. Some poems will analyze and expand the essence of overused words that are not appropriately understood and, hence, have a catastrophic impact on life, be it abstract or tangible. The book will reinforce the attribute of belief and trust to free the mind from fear and apprehension and speak of life's every aspect and the development complexities of emotions.

Helen can dismiss Gilbert and his enchanted Factory as 'weird' when she's never met him, and Catherine think Helen foolish for loving the unreliable and dangerous Joe. Neither sees the perils concealed in what they have not told each other, or guesses at the sinister connection between their separate lives. A Message from the Other Side is a novel about love and marriage, but even more about hatred and the damage people do to each other in the most ordinary of families.

Book excerpt: The Other Side of the World: Vision and Reality embraces and celebrates the experiences of idealistic, young Peace Corps volunteers as they confronted the ancient and enigmatic civilization of India four decades ago. Prompted by memories and emotions tapped during a gathering on the 40-year reunion of their return to the States, members of India 44 A&B provide reflections that are honest, compelling, insightful, riotous, humbling, and yet redemptive. These reflections give expression to feelings long repressed and, at the same time, uncover the mysterious ways in which their service in remote India transformed and redirected the trajectory of their lives. Their stories provide a humorous and deeply moving description of village life, where imperfect language skills and limited technical capabilities interacted with good intentions and stubborn dedication to produce embarrassment on the one hand, and the occasional minor miracle on the other. This is not a feel-good testimony to the Peace Corps on its golden anniversary. Rather, it is a sobering depiction of the lives of volunteers living in one of the Peace Corps' most demanding site countries, where frustrations and challenges were found in abundance. Yet at the end of the day, these stories generally attest to the wisdom of the Peace Corps concept, which affirms the powers of volunteerism and the giving of self. For many, it was the first time these volunteers had articulated their feelings since leaving India. Mary Jo Clark, Thomas Corbett, Michael Simonds and Haywood Turrentine compiled the book. Respectively, the authors reside in San Diego, California, Madison, Wisconsin, the greater Hartford area, and Birmingham, Alabama. http: //sbpra.com/HaywoodTurrentine

Book excerpt: A fictional story of Northwestern Himalayas – Small villages – A girl, her upbringing and culture with a combination of ancient and a bit of modernity. Along with tossing and turning experiences –– Stories composed ‘Around the Corner of Saroi’—A place where life is imagined as another world, exactly just at the end corner of the universe. A mixed memoir of personal and paternal life experiences – Description of cherished moments encountered in a joint family house called ‘Chowki House.’ While everyone is sitting on the patio, in the deep dark snowy and wintery nights, having endless gossiping sessions, in the open, close to a bonfire called angheetha in the local dialect and ‘brazier’ in today’s world. Though this narrative is totally fictional, the gist is inspired through the experiences of our forefathers and the narration of a particular community of that age that undoubtedly existed around that time. Highlighted the myths and misbeliefs that had prevailed over the period, carried on from generation to generation. Despite some of them being proved as having scientific notions behind them. While some had been in practice to keep family and community on the right track into closely knitted societal bonds. Otherwise, they have no meaning. However, “Other side of the Edge ” is not just about the pain and pleasure our forefathers' generations experienced in the olden days. It’s about the precious human values shared as a part of society that refused to be ignored. Where ‘family gathering’ was the one and only source of entertainment for extended families. To discuss, share their past and present experiences, and stand up together to prepare the best for the future of those they care about and want to have around them. Where bonding with relatives was meant to show ‘respect’ without being self-centred, rather than a gesture of formality. From my writing, I attempted to pen down those glimpses heard through the mouth of forefathers, and some of them sighted in childhood. Yet, perhaps there might be times I would not have understood precisely what the message meant during those tender years of childhood.

Book excerpt: To both professional soldiers and historians, the causes of the German catastrophe in Eastern Europe in the years from 1941 to 1945 will ever remain an absorbing problem. Why did Hitler’s hitherto invincible Wehrmacht—which between September 1939 and June 1941 had knocked over like tenpins the far from negligible armies of Poland, France, and Yugoslavia, had driven three-hundred-odd thousand British from the continent in a campaign of a few brief weeks, and had spread the rule of Hitler’s Reich from Brest to Crete and from Arctic Narvik to the desert sands of Tripoli—why did this Wehrmacht come to a dead halt before Moscow within six months of launching its all-out assault on the Soviet Union? Why, once again in the autumn of 1942, did the Wehrmacht suffer such an overwhelming defeat at Stalingrad—after occupying nearly half of European Russia, reducing the Red armies to less than two and one half million men at the beginning of 1942, and planting the swastika on Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus, more than 1,000 miles from its advanced base in Poland? These are questions General Anders attempts to answer in the present analytical study of the Russo-German war—and, in my opinion, he succeeds to the full, with amazing clarity and unanswerable logic.-Foreword.

Book excerpt: Some forty scholarly works, written by historians on both sides of the Border, form the basis for this non-scholarly attempt to provide a short, simple story of events between the Spanish conquest of Mexico five centuries ago and Mexico's dominance of itself since its independence of two hundred years. Better analysis of events here described in a factually chronologic way can be found in the writer's historical sources. A reader knowing little of Mexico's history can get a good start with this writer's try to show what the large and beautiful land to the south has met and overcome on the way to what it has, and what it will become.

Book excerpt: “A superb book—an American equivalent to John Keegan’s The Face of Battle. I sincerely believe that Grunts is destined to be a classic.”—Dave Grossman, Author of On Killing and On Combat From the acclaimed author of The Dead and Those About to Die comes a sweeping narrative of six decades of combat, and an eye-opening account of the evolution of the American infantry. From the beaches of Normandy and the South Pacific Islands to the deserts of the Middle East, the American soldier has been the most indispensable—and most overlooked—factor in wartime victory. In Grunts, renowned historian John C. McManus examines ten critical battles—from Hitler’s massive assault on U.S. soldiers at the Battle of the Bulge to counterinsurgency combat in Iraq—where the skills and courage of American troops proved the crucial difference between victory and defeat. Based on years of research and interviews with veterans, this powerful history reveals the ugly face of war in a way few books have, and demonstrates the fundamental, and too often forgotten, importance of the human element in serving and protecting the nation.
