Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's the first thing that comes to people's minds when someone asked, "What is your definition on domestic violence?" Throughout the years, people define this term as physical abuse, which is correct, although it is not the complete answer. We hear the media and other sources when they announced the shocking stories of women being beaten and a lot of times murdered in the hands of their spouses. Physical abuse has been the headlines on the media through decades especially when it must be with a public figure. It is a devastating, horrendous act which doesn't discriminate race, culture, gender, and age. However, the definition that has been projected through years on domestic violence has not been completed. Domestic violence has different sides of abuse: the one which leaves bruise on the exterior of the body and the other one is the silent and unknown. This one leaves painful scars on the inside; the pain can be seen in the faces of this populous. This side is the one where society invites it into their life or they are not aware of the existence of the other side. The Other Side of Domestic Violence was written with the purpose to understand there's no difference from one and the other. Both are painful, destroy lives and leave scars. This book was inspired on the events that took two decades on the author's life. The Other Side of Domestic Violence is about the different types of abuse that has been happening for decades and has not been taken in consideration. Sadly, when people are unaware, they are dragging their loved ones into this type of scenario for instance, their children. The author demonstrates how psychological, verbal, environmental, sexual, and financial abuses affect these people's self-esteem, anguish, loneliness, and depression. All these feelings are the result of a manipulative and cruel minds. Nonetheless, Lydia's story demonstrates that anyone can get out of these types of abuse and be healed from the scars of the other side of domestic violence. "The past can't influence anybody's future; however, it can become the motive to achieve greater opportunities to bless others in the future." When Lydia Gonzalez understood the importance of this truth, her life changed, and she became a totally different person. The Other Side of Domestic Violence presents a life of manipulation, discovering the truth, coping with grief, and making the decision to move on to a new journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning investigative journalist provides a disturbing new look at an underreported type of domestic violence—the abuse of men. The first edition of Philip W. Cook's book, Abused Men: The Hidden Side of Domestic Violence (Praeger, 1997), drew attention and praise nationwide from individuals and from media, ranging from CNN and Fox network's The O'Reilly Factor to scholarly publications such as The Journal of Marriage and Family. On the 10th anniversary of that groundbreaking book, Cook began revising and expanding his work. The result is this second edition—a disturbing look at a trend that continues to increase. The new edition of Abused Men: The Hidden Side of Domestic Violence offers up-to-date data on the prevalence of intimate partner violence against men, incorporating personal interviews and cases drawn from the media. It also includes updates on law, legislation, court activity, social responses, police activity, support groups, batterer programs, and crisis intervention programs. The final chapter contains a detailed and specific description of needed reforms in the current approach to intimate partner violence, whether the victims are male or female.

Book excerpt: When one woman survives the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers, she decides to fake her death and start a new life across the country, until her past—and a mysterious figure—comes back to haunt her. On the surface, Neal Westman is a charming and successful architect, a man most women would swoon over. But as his fiancée, Damita, prepares for their wedding, she discovers that Neal isn’t the man she thought he was. One night, he beats her so badly she can barely walk. Somehow, Damita manages to show up for work the next day in the World Trade Center—on September 11, 2001. With the help of a man who appears, seemingly out of nowhere, she runs from the building as quickly as possible. When they both make it to safety, she turns to find he is gone, but hears the words, don’t worry, I’ll meet you on the other side. When Damita gets home, still covered in dust, she’s met by a drunken Neal—and he wants to finish what he started. Instead, Damita defends herself, leaving Neal senseless on the ground. Suddenly, a brilliant idea strikes: She could run far, far away, and no one will ever know she’s still alive—or what happened to her husband, especially if she becomes a suspect for murder… Damita settles into a new life in Seattle without contacting anyone, but it seems that her past isn’t completely wiped away. Anonymous, threatening notes mysteriously appear on her doorstep, and Damita becomes convinced she’s going to prison—or worse, when she finds out who’s behind it all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I, Jean Vautoir Paul, was born in Jérémie, Haiti. My mother, two sisters, and I went to Port-au-Prince (the capital of Haiti) on the invitation of our aunt Edele. She introduced us to Ms. Eleanor Louise Snare, a white American lady who adopted our orphan cousin, Jean Fanes Snare, who really needed a mom or a dad at that time. She raised us as a big happy family. Those three women had inculcated in us the best moral principles ever. Ms. Snare couldn’t afford to send us to college, so with only my high school diploma, I went to teach English. After a few years, I was blessed to run my own English school, One Way English School, in Thomassin 25. In 1999, I left for Philadelphia; and in 2014, left for Florida and settled here since. I always dreamed to make a difference in other people’s lives. Therefore, in a day-by-day basis, I do my research so I can become a professional writer to bring change, hope, love, understanding, wisdom, compassion, and respect in the lives of so many who need and deserve it. Hopefully, my books do just that so I can form better people, children, societies, and families for a better world. I take pleasure in writing. It’s my life. Read my books and get addicted to do the right thing.

Book excerpt: Detailing the domestic violence suffered by the first author during her 16 year marriage, this moving volume details the background and events leading up to and immediately following Beth Sipe's tragic act of desperation: ending the life of the perpetrator. Encouraged to publish her story by her therapist and co-author, Evelyn Hall, Sipe relates how her case was mishandled by the police, the military, a mental health professional and the welfare system, illustrating how women like herself are further victimized and neglected by the very systems that are expected to provide assistance. Her story is followed by seven commentaries by experts in the field. They discuss the causes and process of spousal abuse, reasons why battered women stay, and the dynamic consequences of domestic violence.

Book excerpt: Lacy Johnson's rich and poetic memoir, The Other Side, chronicles her brutal kidnapping and imprisonment at the hands of an ex-boyfriend, her dramatic escape, and her hard-fought struggle to recover. Lacy Johnson bangs on the glass doors of a sleepy local police station in the middle of the night. Her feet are bare; her body is bruised and bloody; U-bolts dangle from her wrists. She has escaped, but not unscathed. The Other Side is the haunting account of a first passionate and then abusive relationship; the events leading to Johnson’s kidnapping, rape, and imprisonment; her dramatic escape; and her hard-fought struggle to recover. At once thrilling, terrifying, harrowing, and hopeful, The Other Side offers more than just a true crime record. In language both stark and poetic, Johnson weaves together a richly personal narrative with police and FBI reports, psychological records, and neurological experiments, delivering a raw and unforgettable story of trauma and transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to critically examine Hollywood films that focus on male partner violence against women. These films include Gaslight, Sleeping with the Enemy, What’s Love Got to Do with It, Dolores Claiborne, Enough, and Safe Haven. Shaped by the contexts of postfeminism, domestic abuse post-awareness, and familiar genre conventions, these films engage in ideological “gaslighting” that reaffirms our preconceived ideas about men as abusers, women as victims, and the racial and class politics of domestic violence. While the films purport to condemn abuse and empower abused women, this study proposes that they tacitly reinforce the very attitudes that we believe we no longer tolerate. Shoos argues that films like these limit not only popular understanding but also social and institutional interventions.

Book excerpt: "Stunning . . . . This is an immensely courageous story that will break your heart, leave you in tears, and, finally, offer hope and redemption. Brava, Kelly Sundberg." —Rene Denfeld, author of The Child Finder In this brave and beautiful memoir, written with the raw honesty and devastating openness of The Glass Castle and The Liar’s Club, a woman chronicles how her marriage devolved from a love story into a shocking tale of abuse—examining the tenderness and violence entwined in the relationship, why she endured years of physical and emotional pain, and how she eventually broke free. "You made me hit you in the face," he said mournfully. "Now everyone is going to know." "I know," I said. "I’m sorry." Kelly Sundberg’s husband, Caleb, was a funny, warm, supportive man and a wonderful father to their little boy Reed. He was also vengeful and violent. But Sundberg did not know that when she fell in love, and for years told herself he would get better. It took a decade for her to ultimately accept that the partnership she desired could not work with such a broken man. In her remarkable book, she offers an intimate record of the joys and terrors that accompanied her long, difficult awakening, and presents a haunting, heartbreaking glimpse into why women remain too long in dangerous relationships. To understand herself and her violent marriage, Sundberg looks to her childhood in Salmon, a small, isolated mountain community known as the most redneck town in Idaho. Like her marriage, Salmon is a place of deep contradictions, where Mormon ranchers and hippie back-to-landers live side-by-side; a place of magical beauty riven by secret brutality; a place that takes pride in its individualism and rugged self-sufficiency, yet is beholden to church and communal standards at all costs. Mesmerizing and poetic, Goodbye, Sweet Girl is a harrowing, cautionary, and ultimately redemptive tale that brilliantly illuminates one woman’s transformation as she gradually rejects the painful reality of her violent life at the hands of the man who is supposed to cherish her, begins to accept responsibility for herself, and learns to believe that she deserves better.

Book excerpt: In this book, Woman to Woman: Domestic Violence! A Wrong Turn in Life, you will be taken on a journey that will help you understand the will of God for your life. Daisy Marrs will help you understand that domestic violence is a wrong turn in life and does not define who you are. As a young girl and not feeling loved by her father, Daisy still had dreams. Most young girls like Daisy may dream of how life should be, how happiness should be obtained but dreams can be altered by the hand of someone else. After finding God, she learned that He had never given up on her. Learning to hear His voice allowed her dreams and purpose to come to pass. It was then that through her pain, life would take a turn.Daisy will take you on a journey through her experiences and will help you understand that there is a way out. Ultimately, like Daisy, you will find out how your will to live will give you the strength to survive. She will also help you understand that although victims of domestic violence experience abuse differently, everyone has matching scars. If you have ever questioned yourself about the trauma caused by abuse, you will find healing through the chapters of this book. As God reveals himself through the pages, you will learn how to release yourself from your past by loving who God created you to be. Daisy explains the importance of forgiveness in order to be forgiven by God; therefore by releasing your abuser through forgiveness, will also help you move into the present moment instead of the past. Ultimately, as God shows up through your reading you will be able to feel His presence and be transformed by the renewing of your mind. "Staying focused will help guide you to the direction intended; thereby shaping you into your God-given purpose." Daisy Arness Marrs
