Probable derivation of hdyana--The Agrayana sacrifices--Their number and nature Performed every half-year in Vasanta and Sharad--Greek legends of Urion-Their similarity to Vedic legends--German traditions and festivities-Stag and hind--Twelve nights-Dogdays-All of which indicate the commencement of the year in Orion --Dr. Kuhn's explanation is insufficient--The usual adjuncts of Orion--His belt, staff and lion's skin--The aivyaonghana of Haoma in the Avesta--The yajnopavtta of the Brfthmans-- Their sacred character probably borrowed from the belt of Orion or Yajna--Use of mikhald, ajina and danda in the Upanayana ceremony--Probably in imitation of the costume of Orion or Prajftpati, the first of the Brahmans- Derivation of Orion from Agrayana-Its probability--Phonetic difficulties--Conclusion. In the last chapter 1 have quoted an observation of Plutarch that the Greeks gave their own name to the constellation of Orion, and have there discussed some Vedic legends which corroborate Plutarch's remarks and indicate that the vernal equinox was in Orion at that time. In the present chapter I mean to examine other legends which go to shew that the constellation of Orion was known and figured before the Greeks, the Parsis, and the Indians separated from their common home. and that the legends or the traditions so preserved, and perhaps the name of the constellation, can be naturally and easily explained only on the supposition that the vernal equinox was then near the asteism of Mrigashiras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian astronomy was one of the first subjects which attracted the attention of Western scholars after the existence of Sanskrit literature became known to them in the last quarter of the 18th century. There are a number of learned and critical works written by Indologists like William Jones, Colebrooke, Davies, Bailey, Bentley, Whitney, Jacobi, Plunkett, Biot and many more. Some of these works were highly critical of the Indian system and led to several controversies, and some explored the depth and antiquity of the system followed in India quite brilliantly and in an unbiased manner. This small treatise attempts to put things in proper perspective, edevouring to sum up the whole controversy, thus recasting, revising, enlarging, and bringing upto date, the theories which were readily accepted by scholars from all parts of the world.
Book Synopsis Vedic Physics by : Raja Ram Mohan Roy

Book excerpt: The ?igveda is the first book of humankind and the most sacred scripture of Hinduism. It also happens to be the most ill-understood book of our times. Despite the extensive study by academic and religious scholars, the purpose and meaning of the ?igveda and many ancient Hindu scriptures remain unclear. In this pathbreaking book, the discovery of the ?igveda as a book of ancient cosmology is described, and related to the seals of ancient Indus Valley Civilization, thereby challenging our perception of humanity."The Vedas have always been lauded as containing the secrets of cosmogenesis. Raja Roy in his remarkable book shows how this is true not only from the yogic vison but according to the latest insights of modern physics. The book takes the reader on a vast panoramic journey through the universe of matter, mind and human history as well."David Frawley (Vamadeva Shastri), Director, American Institute of Vedic Studies"Roy presents a new framework for the understanding of the Vedic hymns from the point of view of physics and then he draws parallels with recent theories on the nature of the universe. We celebrate the new path he has hewn through the bush of old scholarship."Professor Subhash Kak, Oklahoma State University

Download or read book Bal Gangadhar Tilak written by Biswamoy Pati and published by Primus Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bal Gangadhar Tilak was a frontline fighter, intimately involved with the Indian national movement. This book explores Tilak's engagements, not just with the Indian national movement, but also the nuanced diversities associated with a context that preceded the mass movements. Based on a variety of sources, the contributors attempt to historicize a nationalist icon. In the process, the reader is presented with a holistic picture of a leading nationalist personality, including his contradictions and ambiguities. In this sense, the different contributions in this book question the 'received wisdom' associated with Tilak. Bal Gangadhar Tilak: Popular Readings would be of use to those interested in the Indian national movement and the manner in which it intersected with a range of social, cultural and political issues. The 'non-specialist' reader, too, will be interested in the way in which the book makes both Tilak and his context accessible.
Book Synopsis The Culture and Civilisation of Ancient India in HIstorical Outline by : D D Kosambi
Download or read book The Culture and Civilisation of Ancient India in HIstorical Outline written by D D Kosambi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1965, The Culture and Civilisation of Ancient India in Historical Outline is a strikingly original work, the first real cultural history of India. The main features of the Indian character are traced back into remote antiquity as the natural outgrowth of historical process. Did the change from food gathering and the pastoral life to agriculture make new religions necessary? Why did the Indian cities vanish with hardly a trace and leave no memory? Who were the Aryans – if any? Why should Buddhism, Jainism, and so many other sects of the same type come into being at one time and in the same region? How could Buddhism spread over so large a part of Asia while dying out completely in the land of its origin? What caused the rise and collapse of the Magadhan empire; was the Gupta empire fundamentally different from its great predecessor, or just one more ‘oriental despotism’? These are some of the many questions handled with great insight, yet in the simplest terms, in this stimulating work. This book will be of interest to students of history, sociology, archaeology, anthropology, cultural studies, South Asian studies and ethnic studies.
Book Synopsis The Presence of Siva by : S. Kramrisch
Download or read book The Presence of Siva written by S. Kramrisch and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the three great gods of Hinduism, Siva is a living god. The most sacred and most ancient book of India, The Rg Veda, evokes his presence in its hymns; Vedic myths, rituals, and even astronomy testify to his existence from the dawn of time. In a lively meditation on Siva--based on original Sanskrit texts, many translated here for the first time--Stella Kramrisch ponders the metaphysics, ontology, and myths of Siva from the Vedas and the Puranas. Who is Siva? Who is this god whose being comprises and transcends everything? From the dawn of creation, the Wild God, the Great Yogi, the sum of all opposites, has been guardian of the absolute. By retelling and interweaving the many myths that keep Siva alive in India today, Kramrisch reveals the paradoxes in Siva's nature and thus in the nature of consciousness itself.

Book Synopsis Descriptive Archaeoastronomy and Ancient Indian Chronology by : Amitabha Ghosh
Download or read book Descriptive Archaeoastronomy and Ancient Indian Chronology written by Amitabha Ghosh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-04 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the basic fundamentals of descriptive archaeoastronomy and its application to the astronomical descriptions found in ancient Indian scriptures. Archaeoastronomy is a branch of positional astronomy that helps to determine the epochs of ancient astronomical alignments and special astronomical events. In this book, only the descriptions of special stellar alignments and events found in ancient texts can identify the antiquity of the descriptions. India possesses a large volume of ancient scriptures like Vedas and Puranas which contain many astronomical descriptions as in ancient India positional astronomy was well developed. The antiquities of these texts are determined through archaeoastronomical techniques. Major events like Mahabharata War are dated and using these dates a chronology of ancient India is determined. The astronomically determined chronology is compared with the results from various archaeological, palaeoclimatological, geological and genealogical investigations of ancient India. This introductory book interests readers interested in unveiling the mystery involved with the protohistory of this ancient civilization.
Book Synopsis The Dawn of Astronomy by : J. Norman Lockyer
Download or read book The Dawn of Astronomy written by J. Norman Lockyer and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2006-04-28 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneer in the fields of astrophysics and astro-archeology, J. Norman Lockyer believed that ancient Egyptian monuments were constructed "in strict relation to the stars." In this celebrated study, he explores the relationship between astronomy and architecture in the age of the pharaohs. Lockyer addresses one of the many points already extensively investigated by Egyptologists: the chronology of the kings of Egypt. All experts are in accord regarding the identity of the first monarch, but they cannot agree upon the dates of his reign within a thousand years. The author contends that by applying a knowledge of astronomy to the actual site orientation of the region's pyramids and temples, accurate dating can be achieved. In order to accomplish this, Lockyer had to determine the level of the ancient Egyptian ideas of astronomy. Some of his inferences have been invalidated by subsequent scholarship, but many of his other conclusions stand firm and continue to provide sensational leads into contemporary understanding of archaic astronomy.

Book Synopsis Archaeology of Babel by : Siraj Ahmed
Download or read book Archaeology of Babel written by Siraj Ahmed and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than three decades, preeminent scholars in comparative literature and postcolonial studies have called for a return to philology as the indispensable basis of critical method in the humanities. Against such calls, this book argues that the privilege philology has always enjoyed within the modern humanities silently reinforces a colonial hierarchy. In fact, each of philology's foundational innovations originally served British rule in India. Tracing an unacknowledged history that extends from British Orientalist Sir William Jones to Palestinian American intellectual Edward Said and beyond, Archaeology of Babel excavates the epistemic transformation that was engendered on a global scale by the colonial reconstruction of native languages, literatures, and law. In the process, it reveals the extent to which even postcolonial studies and European philosophy—not to mention discourses as disparate as Islamic fundamentalism, Hindu nationalism, and global environmentalism—are the progeny of colonial rule. Going further, it unearths the alternate concepts of language and literature that were lost along the way and issues its own call for humanists to reckon with the politics of the philological practices to which they now return.
