Nathaniel Hawthorne masterpiece, the Scarlet letter, set in 17th-century Puritan Massachusetts Bay colony, is the tale of Hester Prynne ‘shame’ following the birth of a child whose father remains unidentified for the larger part of the narrative. Hester’s defiance in the face of expulsion and repudiation makes her a heroine ahead of her time. Pearl, the illegitimate daughter, Arthur Dimmesdale, the ‘cheating’ minister of church, Reverend John Wilson and the malicious Roger Chillingworth are Hawthorne’s characters whose lives, premised on guilt and pride, take a tumultuous turn as the cataclysmic outcome of an act of passion. The embroidered Scarlet ‘a’—that she is required to wear on her dress on the day of her punishment— becomes a manifestation of Hester’s ‘adultery’, her erratic past and ignominious present. Will she break her vow of silence?

When it’s revealed that her lover is a saintly young minister, Dimmesdale, who is the leader of those exhorting her to name the child’s father, he is tormented until stricken by guilt, becomes ill and publicly confesses his adultery before dying in Hester’s arms. Hester herself is revealed to be a self-reliant heroine who is never truly repentant for committing adultery with the minister and feels that their act was consecrated by their deep love for each other. She begins a new life with her daughter in Europe and years later upon her return to New England, she continues to wear the scarlet letter. After her death she is buried next to Dimmesdale and on their joint tombstone is a description of the scarlet A.

Book excerpt: Upon the death of her demonic husband, Hester Prynne is left a widow, and her daughter Pearl, a wealthy heiress. Hester takes her daughter to live a quiet life in England--only to find herself drawn into the circle of the most powerful Puritan of all time, Oliver Cromwell. From the moment Hester donned the famous scarlet letter, it instilled in her the power to see the sins and hypocrisy of others, an ability not lost on the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth. To Cromwell, Hester’s sight is either a sign of sorcery or a divine gift that Hester must use to assist the divinely chosen in his scheming to control England. Since sorcery carries a death sentence, Hester is compelled against her will to use her sight to assist Cromwell. She soon finds herself entangled in a web of political intrigue, espionage, and forbidden love. Hester will carry readers away to seventeenth century England with a deeply human story of family, love, history, desire, weakness, and the human ideal.
