Book excerpt: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a children's novel written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. Originally published by the George M. Hill Company in Chicago on May 17, 1900, it has since been reprinted numerous times, most often under the name The Wizard of Oz, which is the name of both the popular 1902 Broadway musical and the well-known 1939 film adaptation. The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz, after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a cyclone.[nb 1] The novel is one of the best-known stories in American popular culture and has been widely translated. Its initial success, and the success of the 1902 Broadway musical which Baum adapted from his original story, led to Baum's writing thirteen more Oz books. The original book has been in the public domain in the US since 1956. Baum dedicated the book "to my good friend & comrade, My Wife," Maud Gage Baum. In January 1901, George M. Hill Company, the publisher, completed printing the first edition, which totaled 10,000 copies.

Book excerpt: This fully annotated volume collects three of Baum's fourteen Oz novels in which he developed his utopian vision and which garnered an immense and loyal following. The Wizard of Oz (1900) introduces Dorothy, who arrives from Kansas and meets the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, and a host of other characters. The Emerald City of Oz (1910) finds Dorothy, Aunt Em, and Uncle Henry coming to Oz just as the wicked Nome King is plotting to conquer its people. In Baum's final novel, Glinda of Oz (1920), Dorothy and Princess Ozma try to prevent a battle between the Skeezers and the Flatheads. Tapping into a deeply rooted desire in himself and his loyal readers to live in a peaceful country which values the sharing of talents and gifts, Baum's imaginative creation, like all great utopian literature, holds out the possibility for change. Also included is a selection of the original illustrations by W. W. Denslow and John R. Neill. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fantasyland of Oz continues to fascinate steadfast Oz fans. They sympathize with the tin woodsman in his need for a heart, the cowardly lion in his need for courage, and with Dorothy as she searches for a way to return home to Kansas. In The Origin of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, author Michele Rubatino reveals the mystery behind the evidence regarding the source of the maps found in Tik-Tok of Oz. Rubatino discusses the origin of the maps that Baum claims he discovered, rather than penned from his own imagination. The Origin of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz provides evidence to show the maps found in the Oz books, forty of them in all, were derived from drawing blueprints taken from the text of a King James Version Bible dating from around 1611. This information found by Baum formed the foundation for the creation of this fantasy series. Rubatino's discovery will help Oz enthusiasts, theologians, and all interested in the works of Baum to decipher the many facets he included in his stories. It will help fans gain a better perspective on the mysteries still to be found in the Bible and the Oz series.

Book excerpt: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the classic American children’s novel about the adventures of Dorothy, a young girl who along with her dog Toto is swept away by a cyclone to the magical Land of Oz. It was written by L. Frank Baum and published in May 1900. Dorothy lives with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and Toto on a farm in the Kansas prairie. One day, Dorothy and Toto are caught up in a cyclone that deposits her farmhouse into Munchkin Country in the magical Land of Oz. The falling house has killed the Wicked Witch of the East, the evil ruler of the Munchkins. The Good Witch of the North arrives with three grateful Munchkins and gives Dorothy the magical Silver Shoes that once belonged to the Wicked Witch. The Good Witch tells Dorothy that the only way she can return home is to go to the Emerald City and ask the great and powerful Wizard of Oz to help her. The Library of Congress has declared it “America’s greatest and best-loved homegrown fairy-tale.” Its groundbreaking success and the success of the Broadway musical adaptation led Baum to write thirteen additional Oz books which serve as sequels to the first story. The 1939 film musical adaptation starring Judy Garland is considered by many to be one of the greatest films in cinema history. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: Celebrate the 100th birthday of a beloved American classic. From the moment it appeared in 1900, The Wizard of Oz sparked the imaginations of children and adults alike. The inhabitants of Oz have become an important part of American literary history. When Dorothy and her little dog Toto are suddenly swept from the plains of Kansas to the land of Oz, they meet up with some of the most endearing characters ever created, as well as one of the worst villains in children's literature. Together, Dorothy and her friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion set off on a fantastic journey down the yellow brick road in search of the wonderful Wizard. To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the publication of this classic American tale, Michael Hague re-illustrated the jacket, which, along with the book's cover, has been newly designed. The cover is now a three-piece case with gold foil stamps of Oz and the artist's signature on the front. Spot illustrations have been added to the redesigned front and back matter and a photograph of L. Frank Baum is now included, making this a lavish edition just right for gift givers or collectors.
