Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Man Whoever claims to be an educated man, a man who thinks, must acquire a knowledge of the outline of modern scientific research and of the theories concerning the descent of man. No thought is so essential and sublime as that about ourselves. One may be skeptical as to the value of these things, but before any discussion of them is possible, one must, above all, think. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Man: A Sketch of the Origin of the Human Race Darwin's views were bitterly opposed, although it would seem more dignified if God had fashioned the first man (not directly from a clod of soil, but indirectly after a long preparation of the material) through series of inter mediate stages of lower animals, from the infinitely more refined organism of an anthropoid brute. Yet, even from the standpoint of modern science we can still insist that man, though his body consists of the same material as the dust of the earth, holds an unique position among the rest of creation. The sway of conservatism, however, is great, and so the people trained in the old views of thought clung with tenacity to a literal belief in the story of Genesis. In spite of all that Darwin said in favor of the kinship of man to the rest of animate creation, almost half a century passed before the doctrine of evolution gained ground and became universally recognized; and there were no other objections to it, than the implication as to man's descent from lower forms of life and the denial of the legend that God had formed him directly from the dust of the earth. At present there may be no one trained in modes of scientific thinking who does not unhesitatingly accept the doctrine of evolution with all that it implies; but having understood the physiological solution of the origin of man, it may be wise to look at the argument of the reactionary party, whose main contention consists in ridiculing the idea that man was descended from the ape. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Man, Vol. 2: Man, Culture and Society On November 24, 1859, Charles Darwin at last saw in print the manu script over which he had labored for almost a quarter of a century, the book whose ponderous title has become the familiar Origin of Species. The world had been waiting, and in a single day the first edition of was sold out. One hundred years later, the day was celebrated as marking one of those events that influence the career of man by changing his perspective of himself and his place in the universe. In December of 1955 the University of Chicago began planning its celebration of the centenary in the most appropriate manner - bring ing to bear, on the subject of evolution, current knowledge from a variety of relevant fields, thus advancing once more our understanding of the world and man. About fifty scientists were selected during 1956, and their themes were agreed upon; during 1957 and 1958, they developed the papers that are published here. As these were completed, they were exchanged among the authors. Armed with new information and insights, all but five of the authors met at the University on November 22, 1959, to prepare for panel discussions Of the issues in evolution which were to be held for the public during the five-day Celebration, beginning on the Centennial of the publication date of Origin of Species. The dis eussions were based on the papers that had been distributed in ad vance, but the papers themselves were not delivered at the Celebration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Man, Vol. 1: A Popular Scientific Study; Human Embryology or Ontogeny When the first edition of this work appeared in 1874, and the third edition followed three years afterwards, the circum stances of biology were very different from what they are to-day. It is true that the struggle for the recognition of the great truths of science, which Darwin had initiated by the publication of his epoch-making work in 1859, had already been decided in his favour on the main issue. But the most important consequence of the new evolutionary doctrine (now firmly established for the first time through his theory of selection) - that is to say, its application to man - still met with the most spirited and widespread opposition. Book excerpt: "Is there evidence for evolution? We've all been educated about evolution -- about the fact that all living species have evolved from some primitive, single-celled life form, and the theory that it happened by means of random mutations and natural selection. Surprisingly, in this groundbreaking book Dr. Lee Spetner offers compelling evidence that the data we have supports neither the theory nor the fact of evolution. Instead, the data actually supports an entirely different theory, which, if correct, will have far-reaching consequences for humanity and revolutionize scientific research and education. This book is a must-read for any thinking person." -- from publisher's website.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice An ABC Australia Best Book on Religion and Ethics of the Year Distinguished Book Award, Sociology of Religion Section of the American Sociological Association Religion in Human Evolution is a work of extraordinary ambition—a wide-ranging, nuanced probing of our biological past to discover the kinds of lives that human beings have most often imagined were worth living. It offers what is frequently seen as a forbidden theory of the origin of religion that goes deep into evolution, especially but not exclusively cultural evolution. “Of Bellah’s brilliance there can be no doubt. The sheer amount this man knows about religion is otherworldly...Bellah stands in the tradition of such stalwarts of the sociological imagination as Emile Durkheim and Max Weber. Only one word is appropriate to characterize this book’s subject as well as its substance, and that is ‘magisterial.’” —Alan Wolfe, New York Times Book Review “Religion in Human Evolution is a magnum opus founded on careful research and immersed in the ‘reflective judgment’ of one of our best thinkers and writers.” —Richard L. Wood, Commonweal

Book excerpt: The Descent of Man by Charles Darwin The Descent of Man, Darwin's second landmark work on evolutionary theory (following The Origin of the Species), marked a turning point in the history of science with its modern vision of human nature as the product of evolution. Darwin argued that the noblest features of humans, such as language and morality, were the result of the same natural processes that produced iris petals and scorpion tails. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex The nature of the following work will be best under stood by a brief account of how it came to be written. Dur ing many years I colleeted'notes on the origin or descent of man, without any intention of publishing on the subject, but rather with the determination not to publish, as I thought that I should thus only add to the prejudices against my views. It seemed to me sufficient to indicate, in the first edition of my Origin of Species, ' that by this work light would be thrown on the origin of man and his history; and this implies that man must be included with other organic beings in any general conclusion respecting his man ner of appearance on this earth. Now the case wears a wholly different aspect. When a naturalist like Carl Vogt ventures to say in his address as President of the National Institution of Geneva personne, en Europe au moins, n'ose plus soutenir la creation indépendante et de toutcs pieces, des espéees, it is manifest that at least a large number of naturalists must admit that species are the modi fied descendants of other species; and this especially holds good with the younger and rising naturalists. The greater number accept the agency of natural selection; though some urge, whether with justice the future must decide, that I have greatly overrated its importance. Of the older and honoured chiefs in natural science, many unfortunately are still opposed to evolution in every form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s most revered and eloquent interpreter of evolutionary ideas offers here a work of explanatory force unprecedented in our time—a landmark publication, both for its historical sweep and for its scientific vision. With characteristic attention to detail, Stephen Jay Gould first describes the content and discusses the history and origins of the three core commitments of classical Darwinism: that natural selection works on organisms, not genes or species; that it is almost exclusively the mechanism of adaptive evolutionary change; and that these changes are incremental, not drastic. Next, he examines the three critiques that currently challenge this classic Darwinian edifice: that selection operates on multiple levels, from the gene to the group; that evolution proceeds by a variety of mechanisms, not just natural selection; and that causes operating at broader scales, including catastrophes, have figured prominently in the course of evolution. Then, in a stunning tour de force that will likely stimulate discussion and debate for decades, Gould proposes his own system for integrating these classical commitments and contemporary critiques into a new structure of evolutionary thought. In 2001 the Library of Congress named Stephen Jay Gould one of America’s eighty-three Living Legends—people who embody the “quintessentially American ideal of individual creativity, conviction, dedication, and exuberance.” Each of these qualities finds full expression in this peerless work, the likes of which the scientific world has not seen—and may not see again—for well over a century.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Man: A Popular Scientific Study The main theme of the work is that, in the course of their embryonic development, all animals, including man, pass roughly and rapidly through a series of forms which represents the succession of their ancestors in the past. After a severe and extensive study of embryonic phenomena, Haeckel has drawn up a law (in the ordinary scientific sense) to this effect, and has called it the biogenetic law, or the chief law relating to the evolution (genesis) of life (bios). This law is widely and increasingly accepted by embryologists and zoologists. It is enough to quote a recent' declaration of the great American zoologist, President D. Starr Jordan It is, of course, true that the life-history of the individual is an epitome of the life-history of the race while a distinguished German zoologist (sarasin) has described it as being of the same use to the biologist as spectrum analysis is to the astronomer.
