Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Relationship of the Large Mammals of North America The higher fauna of North America, when compared with that of other large continents, presents an astonishing poverty, as to the number both of genera and of species, and the latter are, in the great majority of cases, very closely allied to Old World forms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Animals a Popular Guide to the Mammals of North America, North of Mexico: With Intimate Biographies of the More Familiar Species N preparing the present volume the aim has been to produce I a work sufficiently free from technicalities to appeal to the general reader and at the same time to include such scientific information relative to our North American mammals as would be desired by one beginning their study. The key at the end of the volume will be found of service in identifying unfamiliar mammals, and includes certain characters omitted from the body of the book. As a guide to further study there has been appended a bibliography of the principal works on North American mammals. To many of these I would express my indebtedness, especially to the writings of Allen, Merriam, Miller, Bangs and Rhoads, and also my acknowledgments to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and Mr. Samuel N. Rhoads for the privi lege of studying the specimens contained in their collections. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key to the Land Mammals of Northeastern North America As in the List of t/ze mammals of [wm York, my aim is to present the subject as it stands today rather than to attempt to reach final conclu sions. Numerous forms are therefore admitted the status of which is still in question. Though this course has its disadvantages, it seems the one least open to objection at the present time, when any revisionary work would necessarily be imperfect. Book excerpt: The best field guide to North American mammals The best-selling field guide that "sets new standards" (New Scientist) and "makes all other field guides for mammals of the United States. . . and Canada obsolete" (Journal of Mammalogy) is now even better. Covering 20 species recognized since 2002 and including 13 new color plates, this fully revised edition of Mammals of North America illustrates all 462 known mammal species in the United States and Canada—each in beautiful color and accurate detail. With a more up-to-date species list than any other guide, improved facing-page descriptions, easier-to-read distribution maps, updated common and scientific names, and track and scat illustrations, this slim, light, and easy-to-use volume is the must-have source for identifying North American mammals. Roland Kays and Don Wilson have scoured the technical literature to pull out the key differences between similar species, and illustrated these whenever possible, making the guide useful to amateur naturalists and professional zoologists alike. Casual animal watchers will appreciate the overview of mammal diversity and the tips on identifying animals they can spy in their binoculars, while scientists will appreciate the exacting detail needed to distinguish similar species, including illustrations of shrew teeth, bat toes, and whale dorsal fins. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Book of North American Mammals: Descriptions of Every Mammal Known North of the Rio Grande, Together With Brief Accounts of Habits, Geographical Ranges, Etc Descriptions of new species and subspecies are continually being published. Since work on this field book began; quite a few such papers have appeared and it has become necessary to revise manuscript to include changes. For the purposes of the field book it has seemed advisable to draw a dividing line somewhere; otherwise the manuscript would have been unduly delayed by going back over copy to bring it up to date. Miller's List of N orth American Recent M ammals offered a satisfactory solution for this problem and the 1923 edition was chosen as the basis for this field book. However, I have used all subsequent papers for data other than new narnes and have attempted to consult every source up to the time of going to press; also the new names and changes of nomenclature in important revisions since 1923 have been used. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Small Mammals of Colorado This bulletin on the small mammals of Colorado omits all mention of the tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, and gophers, which were excellently treated by Mr. Robert Rockwell in his bulletin on those animals. The present paper aims to give some mention of our smaller mammals, though it has been a little difficult at times to tell where to draw the line, and what to include and what to omit. Many of these animals are but little known to the casual observer, largely because of the nocturnal habits of the majority of the species, and the retiring habits of others. When one becomes acquainted with them and their ways he finds them very interesting, and their life histories well worth studying. In fact there is still much to be learned about many of them. Since the writers "The Mammals of Colorado" was published, some ten years ago, a number of the genera of North American mammals have been studied by specialists, with the result that some species and subspecies have been added to and others dropped from our local list, and some of the scientific names have been changed. While not making the latter especially prominent in the text, they have invariably been given, for they are a more positive identification of the species than any English or vernacular names. No detailed descriptions of any of the species are included, only a general idea of the color and size is given. The total length is from the end of the nose to the end of the tail, measured in a straight line when the animal is stretched out, and the tail is measured from the root to the tip. I have omitted all mention of the bats, although a considerable number of species is found in the State. These belong to so many different genera that a general description of the animals would be very unsatisfactory, and a detailed account is somewhat beyond the scope of this paper. For interesting and authoritative accounts of the habits of many of our small mammals I would refer my readers to "The Wild Animals of North America," by E. W. Nelson, Chief of the U. S. Biological Survey, published by the National Geographic Society. Mr. Nelson's opportunities of observing the habits of many of our species have been remarkable, and he has made much use of the work of other naturalists. In giving scientific names, when the name of a genus is repeated it is not given in full but abbreviated to the initial letter; likewise in the case of repetition of specific names. Unless otherwise mentioned, the illustrations are from my own photographs. Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18 and 20 were originally published in the "Mammals of Colorado" and are printed from the cuts used in that book. For several of the illustrations which have not hitherto been published, I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. Charles Mace, Mr. Clark Blickensderfer, Mr. Albert Haanstad, and the Colorado Agricultural College through Mr. W. L. Burnett. The pictures will doubtless be of as much use as the text in showing what the animals are like. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mammals of America N preparing the text Of Mammals Of America two classes Of readers have been kept constantly in mind the inexperienced Observer or layman who is yet fond Of animals, and the trained naturalist or sportsman who wishes to supplement his field knowledge with exact book statement. The interest Of both Of these groups may be Similarly keen, but their approach to the subject would necessarily be different. Young people are naturally interested in all living things. From the house dog or cat to the zoological or circus animal, their attention is easily aroused and held. If in later years they do not keep their interest, it is because they have not been allowed to study the subject systematically.
