They drew up, without ever so much as asking the free assent of the king, a constitUr tion so called, the incompetency, the impracticability, the ridiculous absurdity of which was so great, that, even among its authors--(another unexampled yet indubitable fact) not a single man would ever have seriously defended it. This constitution they compelled the king, upon pain of being immediately dethroned, to subscribe and swear to. Scarcely had this happened, when their successors, who by virtue of this constitution alone, had a sort of legal existence, and held something resembling an authority to shew, them. The colonies wished to rnaintaiaiheir old constitution; the government.destroyed it. The resistance, which the colonies opposed against the mother country, was, in every period of this unhappy contest, exactly commensurate with the attack; the total separation was not resolved, until the utter impossibility of preserving the ancient condition was proved. The stamp-act threw America into the most violent commotion; tumultuous scenes, though attended with no acts of bloody violence, broke out in all the provinces. But they were no where formally sanctioned by the approbation of the legislative authorities. The litde congress of 28 deputies of several colonies, who in the year 1765 assembled at New-York, and served as the model for the subsequent larger assembly, passed no other resolution than that " the colonies could only be taxed by their representatives," and expressed this perfectly lawful resolve, in petitions to the king. The single general measure, which was then offered, the non-importation agreement, was a voluntary engagement, sanctioned by no public authorityV: The declaratory act, ...

Book excerpt: From the end of the nineteenth century to the opening of the twenty-first century, America's true Christian heritage has been under attack. Tragically, some Christians have mistakenly joined the effort to attack America's Christian origin by attacking the spirituality of the Founding Fathers. For decades, secularists and the irreligious have erroneously insisted that the Founding Fathers were anti-Christian Deists, but nothing can be further from reality. The overwhelming majority of America's Founding Fathers were orthodox Christians who were members of various denominations. Secularists have attempted to discredit Christian influence in the rise of America by suggesting the Founding Fathers turned to anti-Christian sources when preparing the foundational documents of America. Among the sources alleged to have influenced the formation of America were Enlightenment authors and their writings. But, no place was more thoroughly imbued with the irreligious influences of the Enlightenment than France. While the author of this work does not enter into the Christian influence on the rise of America, he does demonstrate the vast differences between the American and French Revolutions. To ensure succeeding generations of Americans understood the differences between the two Revolutions, John Quincy Adams-one of America's most scholarly presidents and dedicated Christians-translated this work from German into English. Sharing President Adam's concern, it is once again sent to press by Christian Heritage Fellowship, Inc. with an introduction by Stephen A. Flick.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Materials for the History of the American Revolution Two years ago I had occasion to examine certain documents on file in the French archives relating to the American Revolution, the French agency in which can not be exaggerated. I had not read many of them before I came to the conclusion that we were not yet as well informed about that event as we should be, a conclusion fully confirmed by a subsequent examination of the various histories of our country. France furnished a large proportion of the soldiers, arms, officers, and military supplies, nearly the whole of the navy, and most of the credit and money by which the war was successfully terminated. The risk to France was great, the cost enormous - amounting to twelve hundred and eighty million livres - and the effect on the country disastrous, increasing as it did the financial difficulties which led up to the French Revolution. In taking up the cause of the American insurgents France was obliged, in many respects, to control the war, and this necessarily made it a joint operation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980, this book rapidly established itself as the indispensable guide to what brought about the French Revolution, and to the debates of historians about the issue. It combined a full critical account of recent controversies with a fresh interpretation taking stock of wherethe debate had led. Since 1980 discussion among historians has continued as lively as ever, and has moved in directions scarcely explored at that time. The `revisionist' criticism which destroyed the classic mid-century consensus emphasizing the Revolution's social and economic origins has openedthe way to a `post-revisionist' approach focused on cultural change. This new edition brings the subject up to date with an extensisively rewritten survey of the historiography up to the present day, and a revised interpretation modified in the light of research by a new generation of scholars. It will thus remain the starting point for any serious study of thegreatest of all revolutions, which lies at the root of the modern political world. `important book . . . readable and perceptive analysis', Times Higher Education Supplement `His book is excellent, achieving the rare distinction of being both useful and revealing', Spectator `brief, clear, and thoughtful', Journal of Modern History
