Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Growth of the Hebrew Religion The present volume is designed to offer a guide for study rather than simply a new essay or treatise upon the history of Israel's religion. The principal source book for this field of investigation is the Old Testament. It is intended that those using the present textbook shall go to the sources to discover the facts for themselves before they read the discussions in the following chapters or in the books suggested for supplementary reading. The student should make written memoranda of the facts gathered from each group of references given at the opening of a chapter, and only after this has been done should he read the chapter itself. In this way he may become an independent worker who gathers the facts for himself and tests the conclusions of others by his first-hand knowledge. If the time devoted to the course of study permits, the student should compare with the material given in each chapter the parallel discussion in one or more of the authors assigned for supplementary reading, and should then write his own account. A suggested list of headings for such an independent history is given in Appendix II. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: My purpose in these Lectures is to give a short history, as clear as I can make it, of the Religion of the Old Testament. By this I mean that I have endeavored to group the religious material contained in that book in chronological order, and to trace the historical development, which then becomes visible, from its beginning to its end. This beginning has been but lightly touched upon, partly because of its extreme obscurity and partly because of my own insufficient equipment to deal adequately with so complex a problem; but more space has thus been won for the delineation of that phase of the Jewish religion in which it stood at the close of the Old Testament period, and on the lines of which it was destined to develop for many subsequent centuries. from the Preface

Book Synopsis The Abrahamic Religions: a Very Short Introduction by : Charles L. Cohen

This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the book of Genesis, God bestows a new name upon Abram--Abraham, a father of many nations. With this name and his Covenant, Abraham would become the patriarch of three of the world's major religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Connected by their mutual--if differentiated--veneration of the One God proclaimed by Abraham, these traditions share much beyond their origins in the ancient Israel of the Old Testament. This Very Short Introduction explores the intertwined histories of these monotheistic religions, from the emergence of Christianity and Islam to the violence of the Crusades and the cultural exchanges of al-Andalus. Each religion continues to be shaped by this history but has also reacted to the forces of modernity and politics. Movements such as the Reformation and that led by seventh-century Kharijites have emerged, intentioned to reform or restore traditional religious practice but quite different in their goals and effects. Relationships with states, among them Israel and Saudi Arabia, have also figured importantly in their development. The Abrahamic Religions: A Very Short Introduction brings these traditions together into a common narrative, lending much needed context to the story of Abraham and his descendants. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
