Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Development of the Moral Ideas, Vol. 1 of 2 The frequent references made in the present work, on my own authority, to customs and ideas prevalent among the natives of Morocco, require a word of explanation. Seeing the close connection between moral opinions and magic and religious beliefs, I thought it might be useful for me to acquire first-hand knowledge of the folk-lore of some non-European people, and for various reasons I chose Morocco as my field of research. During the four years I spent there, largely among its country population, I have not only collected anthropological data, but tried to make myself familiar with the native way of thinking; and I venture to believe that this has helped me to understand various customs occurring at a stage of civilisation different from our own. I purpose before long to publish the detailed results of my studies in a special monograph on the popular religion and magics of the Moors. For these researches I have derived much material support from the University of Helsingfors. I am also indebted to the Russian Minister at Tangier, M. B. de Bacheracht, for his kindness in helping me on several occasions when I was dependent on the Sultan's Government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Growth of the Moral Instinct, Vol. 1 of 2 During eleven years I have worked at this book, collecting its materials in more or less desultory fashion in leisure of other work, but of late I have been able to devote myself almost exclusively to it. Nevertheless, a sense of depression attends the con trast between the dreams of fifteen years ago and the tame reality which is all that these years have been able to produce. Cheerfully enough would I spend another four years, if I saw, in any reasonable faith, a hope of thereby making it appreciably approach that early ideal. Yet it is not mine to judge it. And I leave it to find its own degree of usefulness. Sincerity of effort may have power to atone for much of inherent feebleness. Download or read book The Evolution of Morality, Vol. 1 written by C. Staniland Wake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Morality, Vol. 1: Being a History of the Development of Moral Culture Before entering on the consideration of the process by which man has come to recognise certain fixed principles, according to which it is necessary that his moral con duct should be guided, it is advisable to examine some what at large the opinions hitherto held on this subject. Prof. Whewell, in his preface to Mackintosh's Dissertation on the Progress of Ethical Philosophy, observes that it is allowed on all sides that we have a conception of moral obligation. This is admitted by Mr Mill who says The internal sanction of duty, whatever our standard of duty may be, is one and the same - a feeling in our own mind; and he adds, this feeling, when disinterested, and connecting itself with the pure idea of duty, and not with some particular form of it, or with any of the merely accessory circumstances, is the essence of Conscience. 1 Whether or not man originally had any conception of moral obligation will have to be con sidered hereafter. It is a weakness in the argument of most writers that they have never thought of asking this question, it being assumed that man's faculties are now the same as they have ever been. In the comparison of opposing systems however, this is of little moment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
