Book excerpt: Combining literary fiction and memoir The White Horse provides a sensitive, humorous and endearing account of a familys struggle to survive living with an alcoholic. Through the lens of a wife and mother, the story evokes the shifting choices confronting families and the social issues they face. It is more than a novel; it is also a social history. The story transcends three continents and forty years. The highs and lows, the laughs and smiles all are here to share. Above all else runs the depth of love that permeates the apparent normalcy of family life on the surface, and the trauma of living in a dysfunctional situation. It is challenging and thought-provoking; although this is subtly assumed through the typical daily activities of the family. Using the metaphor of riding a carousel the story unfolds to reveal the different approaches the family takes to cope with the increasing trials posed by living with an alcoholic husband and father, John. Each ride portrays the emotions and feelings that are encountered during this journey, providing an insight into how the family survives and emerges stronger for the challenge. On the last visit to the carousel the final white horse looms who will be riding it and where is it heading?B Joan from Al-Anon says: "The White Horse is an inspirational book focusing on one of the leading addictions today: alcoholism. The plot is fresh and different". Frank from AA says: "It's a fantastic book. It's funny in places emotional, thoughtful I am now re-thinking my own life". Buy This Book

She soon realizes it’s her old sweetheart, Pat, from country school—and he may not be telling the full truth about how he was injured. Set in rural Montana in 1925, Waltzing Montana follows Mildred as she grapples with feelings for Pat while also trying to overcome the horrific abuse she suffered as a young teenager. Ultimately Mildred must decide whether to continue her isolated life or accept the hand extended to her. Inspired by the life of midwife Edna McGuire (1885–1969), who operated a sheep ranch in central Montana, Blew has turned the classic Western on its head, focusing on rural women and the gender and diversity challenges they faced during the 1920s.

How did all these things come together to solve one of the oddest things to ever happen in Sabana Pass? And how did the Marshal afford that brand new Duryea? Turn of the century is only a few years off and this is the most important case in this city's short life. Clearly the woman was missing. Had she been thrown in the canyon and lions or wolves dragged her to the forest to finish their feast? Had the house been the murder scene? Had the brand new husband really done the deed? Things go pretty fast and furious to solve this since the time was short to get it solved. Keep this book for that time you know you have to finish it since you won't like to put it aside at any time. It's what they call a page turner and a don't-put-'er-down book.

Book excerpt: A journey of wonders and hazards. Time is running out for the world of Genoa and its magical peoples. A wizard’s past mistake must now be set right if Genoa is to survive the battle that is to come. Anna is clearly different from others. With obvious physical differences and powerful abilities, she’s never quite fit in… anywhere. Having no knowledge of her parents, she sets out to discover her true origin. On the run for most of her life, she’s become a master at eluding capture, even a little cocky you might say. When a sticky situation forces her hand, she hitches a ride with a wizard, who whisks her away to another world, where, according to him, she’d been exiled from as a child. This new magical place seems oddly familiar as Anna discovers powerful enemies and treasured allies on her quest for answers. The dangerous journey thrust her headlong into the arms of Kriston, who finds himself caught between sworn-duty and insatiable curiosity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It just happened! There they were! Shouting! “Put it in a book! The research is significant! The magazine “Grade Teacher” devoted the whole issue to the research. What is significant is that we can teach for thinking! We can improve our pupil`s cognitive skills, be they decision- making, creativity, analysis, problem- solving, inductive and deductive reasoning, as well as concept development, to mention just a few. It all began when I had given a presentation at the ASCD convention addressing over 500 educators following a nine- year study on inquiry and cognitive-centered teaching funded by The Ford Foundation and now found myself mobbed by publishers to “PUT IT IN A BOOK! The book was written in ten weeks and it sold and sold and sold one hundred thousand copies and --- was translated into many foreign languages. This resulted in teaching pupils at all grade levels to process information, to develop conceptual frameworks and in depth understanding of the content in all disciplines be it mathematics, the sciences, the social science, music and the arts. Learners developed and “grew” concepts and conceptual frameworks and really understood the material as opposed to mouthing memorized sequences of words. Let me show you what I am trying to convey. I visited a first grade class and there they were singing praises to TWO, chanting One and One is TWO. Then it happened! One little boy raised his hand and blurted out, “What`s a two? We live in a conceptual world. Whether we are teaching kindergarten children their ABCs or graduate students advanced mathematics, we must teach so that they truly understand what they are talking about, so that they can develop concepts, simple concepts first and then more intricate concepts. That my friends is---- what learning is all about. My career has spanned over sixty years spent examining, researching, developing, writing and teaching various methods teachers can use to educate our children more effectively. So here it is, an updated version of the original book, designed for the digital age and our digital destiny providing our new generation with the critical cognitive skills to deal with a very challenging future! The processes and strategies are clearly delineated and applicable to every discipline at every level of instruction. These have been researched and evaluated. In sum, the world has become far more complex than any of us as educators could have envisioned. We are being deluged with the new, the unknown. We will need thinkers and problem solvers. Teach them all to think. Need I say more?

Book excerpt: The Boardgamer magazine was a quarterly magazine devoted primarily, but not exclusively, to the coverage of Avalon Hill / Victory Games titles and to other aspects of the boardgaming hobby. Initially, The Boardgamer’s publication ran concurrently with Avalon Hill’s house magazine, The General, but instead of focusing on new releases, it devoted coverage to those classic, Avalon Hill games which no longer graced the pages of The General. Following the cessation of The General in June 1998, The Boardgamer was the primary periodical dedicated to the titles from AH/VG, until its final issue in 2004. Book excerpt: With more than two hundred vintage photographs, South Orange presents a distinctive view of a village that has evolved from a rural to a sophisticated landscape. Situated next to a two-thousand-five-hundred-acre forest preserve filled with wildlife, South Orange is just a half-hour drive from Manhattan. In the early 1800s, South Orange was popular for its reputation as a healthy, relaxing destination-an escape from the increasingly industrial big-city landscapes of the region. Today, this bedroom community presents a unique mix of cosmopolitan and suburban environments. South Orange follows the village through growth and development, illustrating how it has maintained much of its original character. The many extant homes in a wide variety of late-architectural styles hint at the summer afternoon tea parties of the nineteenth century. The gas-service lamps lining the streets of South Orange were once fueled by whale oil. The home of the Orange Lawn Tennis Club and Seton Hall University, South Orange was also the dwelling place of W.F. Havemeyer, real-estate tycoon, and Louis Bamberger, founder of Bamberger's Department Store, now known as Macy's. Another South Orange notable was William Frederick Allen, editor of the Official Railway Guide, who helped to implement the use of standard time in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many horse trainers, even those who espouse the so-called natural horsemanship approach, take the position that horses who fail to obey a human's request are doing so as much out of perversity as ignorance. That's not Mark Rashid's view. In his words, "If we understand that horses can't separate the way they feel from the way they act, then we can start to see that unwanted behavior isn't bad behavior at all. More times than not, it's just the horse expressing the way he feels at that particular moment in time. . . .How we perceive that information dictates how we respond to it." Whole Heart, Whole Horse focuses on this idea, covering such subjects as gathering information from the horse, turning rider/trainer mistakes into positive experiences, developing realistic boundaries between you and your horse, understanding how and why horses release energy from real or perceived traumas, and reaching a comfortable balance point between horse and rider. Rashid analyzes developing softness, consistency, dependability, trust, and peace of mind in both horses and humans, as well as how to become a leader whom your horse will willingly want to follow and work with. Full of examples that extend beyond the training pen, Whole Heart, Whole Horse offers good sense and information that will make you a more astute, capable, and sensitive horseman and person.

Book excerpt: Within the thirteen stories of Whitney Collins’s Big Bad dwells a hunger that’s dark, deep, and hilarious. Part domestic horror, part flyover gothic, Big Bad serves up real-world predicaments in unremarkable places (motels, dormitories, tiki bars), all with Collins’s heart-wrenching flavor of magical realism. A young woman must give birth to future iterations of herself; a widower kills a horse en route to his grandson’s circumcision; a conflicted summer camper is haunted by a glass eye and motorcycle crash. Collins’s cast of characters must repeatedly choose to fight or flee the “big bad” that dwells within us all. Winner of the Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction, and boasting a 2020 Pushcart-winning story, Big Bad simultaneously entertains and disconcerts.
