Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Opium Revenue: Sir William Muir's Minute and Other Extracts From Papers Published by the Calcutta Government; Also Extracts From Parliamentary Papers At present the opium trade on this side of India is said by parties likely to be well informed to be a losing and unprofitable one, owing to the cost of opium before Shipment being SO high that the prices ruling in China leave no margin Of profit. The expenses Of the middle - men, Of the carriage to Bombay, and of the strong guard required on the road (now to a great extent obviated by the railway), are adverted to. The Bombay Government strongly deprecated any increase 3 the rate could not be raised Without very great risk to the trade and to the revenue. The effect of the increase would be a considerable diminution, or probably the entire stoppage Of the Opium trade Of the Presidency. These anticipations have been falsified by the result. The trade has gone on undiminished with a duty Of Rs. 600, and in one year of Rs. 700. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Making Commercial Law Through Practice 1830–1970 by : Ross Cranston

This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Commercial Law Through Practice 1830–1970 adds a new dimension to the history of Britain's commerce, trade manufacturing and financial services, by showing how they have operated in law over the last one hundred and forty years. In the main law and lawyers were not the driving force; regulation was largely absent; and judges tended to accommodate commercial needs, so that market actors were able to shape the law through their practices. Using legal and historical scholarship, the author draws on archival sources previously unexploited for the study of commercial practice and the law's role in it. This book will stimulate parallel research in other subject areas of law. Modern commercial lawyers will learn a great deal about the current law from the story of its evolution, and economic and business historians will see how the world of commerce and trade operated in a legal context.
Book Synopsis Business, Race, and Politics in British India, c.1850-1960 by : Maria Misra
Download or read book Business, Race, and Politics in British India, c.1850-1960 written by Maria Misra and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the political and economic activities of an important group of British businessmen in India between 1850 and 1960. Though denounced by Indian nationalists as the economic arm of the British Raj, the firms of these `Managing Agents' seemed unassailable before the First World War. However, during the inter-war period they rapidly lost their commanding position to both Indian and other foreign competitors. Dr Misra argues that the failure of these firms was, in part, the consequence of their particular (and ultimately self-defeating) attitudes towards business, politics, and race. She casts new light on British colonial society in India, and makes an important contribution to current debates on the nature of the British Empire and the causes of Britain's relative economic decline.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Debates in Islam by : Kamran Talattof
Download or read book Contemporary Debates in Islam written by Kamran Talattof and published by MacMillan. This book was released on 2000 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable development occurred in the Islamic world during the second half of the 19th century. A group of prominent Muslim theologians began to critically examine classical conceptions and methods of jurisprudence and devised a new approach to Islamic theology. This new approach was nothing short of an outright rebellion against Islamic orthodoxy, displaying an astonishing compatibility with 19th century Enlightenment era thought. In the 20th century, this modernist movement declined, to be replaced by another cultural episode, characterized by the growing power of Islamic fundamentalism. This volume looks at these two very different approaches to Islam, illustrating how Islamic modernism and fundamentalism were discourses each being an organized set of signs consisting of a conceptual framework, symbolic order, and ritualistic behaviour. The editors have selected the most prominent Islamic thinkers of modernist and fundamentalist viewpoints, diverse nationalities, and from both the late decades of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century.
Book Synopsis Disorder in the Court by : George Robb
Download or read book Disorder in the Court written by George Robb and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1999-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the century, a spate of sensational trials kept French and English readers spellbound and ignited bitter tugs of war over marriage and divorce laws, women's rights, temperance, gay prostitution, and lesbian literature. The chapters in Disorder in the Court each focus on a specific high-profile trial, and the public debates surrounding it, in order to address the role of the state in regulating sexual morality. The authors draw on police archives, records of coroners' inquests, magistrates' courts, and news coverage to bring to life social conflicts sparked by differing ideologies of class, gender, and sexuality. Also explored is the role of the police and 'scientific' methods of criminology in an era when working class marital conflicts were resolved by an axe blow, unwanted middle class spouses were dispatched with an arsenic diet, and government agents scanned sensational novels or loitered in Paris urinals in search of vice.
