Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmic Record, Vol. 12: A Monthly Review of the Progress of Ophthalmology; January, 1903 The principle involved in the treatment, surgical or non-surgical, of any and all forms of heterophoria, is the elimination of x, which is the doing away with the necessity for any excitation of the basal, or involuntary, centers connected with the ocular muscles. In other words, the aim of all treatment is to so relate the muscles of any pair that the tonicity of the one shall equal the tonicity of the other. In such a state, since y always equals y, the formula, of necessity, would be a y b y, whatever may be the direction of the point of fixation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmic Record, Vol. 12: A Monthly Review of the Progress of Ophthalmology; June, 1903 Burnett was the first to call attention to the peculiar and remark able appearance of the conjunctivae of the negro in this disease and so complete is his description that I cannot do better than to quote it verbatim: This consists in a brownish discoloration of the con junctiyal tissue, most intense at the scleral base of the mass, and gradually fading away toward the equator of the ball. This discolor ation. Which is undoubtedly situated in the conjunctival tissue itself, as well as in the epithelial layer, is not regular in its distribution but appears to consist of a collection of small deposits of brown pigment. These deposits are sometimes collected in rather large masses, particu larly near the base of the elevation, but towards the equator they appear as small, brownish Specks in the dull and succulent conjunctiva. In some instances this brownish discoloration extends but 3 mm. From the circum - corneal elevation, while in others it reaches almost to the canthus. It does not usually extend so far towards the equator of the globe in either superior or inferior direction. In one case I have seen the whole of the conjunctiva visible through the palpebral opening present this dirty, light-brown appearance in striking contrast to the brilliant, white aspect which the sclera usually presents in this race. In every case that I have seen in the negro I observed this condition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmic Review, Vol. 12: A Monthly Record of Ophthalmic Science; February, 1893 To show that herpes corneae can be diagnosed in other places besides Zurich, Emmert gives notes of some cases from his own case books of the last two years (eleven in all). Of these, most interesting is that of a girl who suffered from in uenza with bronchial catarrh in November, 1889. Following this she had abscesses of the fingers, affecting both soft tissues and bone, pleurisy, and repeated inflammation of the eye. Finally, in the spring of 1892, she acquired fresh febrile symptoms, with numerous spots of infiltration of the lung, of which she expectorated gangrenous particles; she became greatly emaciated and died. In the sputum no tubercle bacilli were ever found - only staphylococcus aureus. Emmert saw her first in October, 1891, on account of a small round patch of epithelial loss in the lower inner quadrant of the cornea of the right eye, apparently the consequence of a herpes vesicle. He regards the corneal process as analogous to that taking place in the fingers. Applica tion of the galvano-cautery was the treatment adopted; hypopyon and iritis developed later, but all healed up in about three weeks, leaving a small nebula. Early in 1892 the epithelium on the scar broke down and came away, but was quickly replaced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmic Review, Vol. 12: A Monthly Record of Ophthalmic Science; June, 1893 Views concerning the essential importance of pressure and retention of fluid. His philosophic caution is to be admired. Not so the repetition of objections which have long been answered. For instance, he doubts the importance of a closed filtration angle because it has been found in eyes which are not glaucomatous. The facts of the case need hardly be repeated, but we would suggest to Dr. Berry the following simile. Let the steam pipe of a boiler be closed while the boiler is in full work the steam pressure will rise. But one does not expect a rise of pressure if steam is not being generated, or if it is escaping freely elsewhere. It need not be said that the subjects of refraction and accommodation are dealt with in a thorough and masterly manner. The student of ophthalmology who has the necessary knowledge of mathematics may here dive into some of the profundities of physiological optics, and those who cannot follow the author through all his formulae may safely pass the small print by and trust to the large for all essential facts. In the chapter on affections of the muscles we find figured and described the excellent tests for latent deviations lately devised by Maddox.
