Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thrips (fhysanoptera) are very small insects, widespread throughout the world with a preponderance of tropical species, many temperate ones, and even a few living in arctic regions. Of the approximately 5,000 species so far identified, only a few hundred are crop pests, causing serious damage or transmitting diseases to growing crops and harvestable produce in most countries. Their fringed wings confer a natural ability to disperse widely, blown by the wind. Their minute size and cryptic behavior make them difficult to detect either in the field or in fresh vegetation transported during international trade of vegetables, fruit and ornamental flowers. Many species have now spread from their original natural habitats and hosts to favorable new environments where they often reproduce rapidly to develop intense damaging infestations that are costly to control. Over the past decade there have been several spectacular examples of this. The western flower thrips has expanded its range from the North American continent to Europe, Australia and South Africa. Thrips palmi has spread from its presumed origin, the island of Sumatra, to the coast of Florida, and threatens to extend its distribution throughout North and South America. Pear thrips, a known orchard pest of Europe and the western United States and Canada has recently become a major defoliator of hardwood trees in Vermont and the neighboring states. Local outbreaks of other species are also becoming problems in field and glasshouse crops as the effectiveness of insecticides against them decline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compendium of Onion and Garlic Diseases and Pests, Second Edition provides an updated, comprehensive, authoritative, and modern account of onion and garlic diseases and insect pests. It covers over 75 diseases including infectious and noninfectious diseases. The new edition contains nearly 250 color photographs of onion and garlic disease symptoms with expert descriptions of the identifying characteristics of symptoms and their causal agents. In addition to disease coverage, the new edition identifies the crop’s most damaging pests, the symptoms they cause, and methods to control and prevent them.Disease management practices should be economical and must be compatible with the environment and the production system. Thus, many options for onion and garlic disease management are discussed. The description of each disease includes a general account of its importance and world distribution, symptoms, causal organism or agent, disease cycle and epidemiology, management, and selected references. The references document the descriptions and may be consulted for further information. This compendium is designed to assist in the diagnosis of onion and garlic diseases and pests, in the field, laboratory, or diagnostic clinic, and to provide recommendations for management of onion and garlic diseases and pests. The compendium will be useful to plant pathologists, entomologists, nematologists, crop production specialists, growers, diagnostic clinicians, students, regulatory agents, crop consultants, agribusiness representatives, educators, researchers, and others interested in the recognition or management of onion and garlic diseases throughout the world. - Publisher.

Book Synopsis Bioassays with Arthropods by : Jacqueline L. Robertson
Download or read book Bioassays with Arthropods written by Jacqueline L. Robertson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a statistics book for bioassays written by a statistician. Next, imagine a statistics book for bioassays written for a layman. Bioassays with Arthropods, Third Edition offers the best of both worlds by translating the terse, precise language of the statistician into language used by the laboratory scientist. The book explains the statistical basis and analysis for each kind of quantal response bioassay in just the right amount of detail. The first two editions were a great reference for designing, conducting, and interpreting bioassays: this completely revised and updated third edition will also train the laboratory scientist to be an expert in estimation of dose response curves. New in the Third Edition: Introduces four new Windows and Apple-based computer programs (PoloJR, OptiDose, PoloMixture and PoloMulti) for the analyses of binary and multiple response analyses, respectively Replaces out-of-date GLIM examples with R program samples Includes a new chapter, Population Toxicology, and takes a systems approach to bioassays Expands the coverage of invasive species and quarantine statistics Building on the foundation set by the much-cited first two editions, the authors clearly delineate applications and ideas that are exceptionally challenging for those not already familiar with their use. They lead you through the methods with such ease and organization, that you suddenly find yourself readily able to apply concepts that you never thought you would understand. To order the PoloSuite computer software described in Bioassays with Arthropods, Third Edition, use the order form found at www.leora-software.com or contact the LeOra Software Company at [email protected].

Book excerpt: "The onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman, is the most destructive insect pest of onions in Washington State. This publication looks at how Thrips can damage onion plants, cause the production of smaller onion bulbs, and result in reduced crop yields. The onion thrips is also an important vector for the iris yellow spot virus (IYSV). IYSV is a tospovirus that causes iris yellow spot disease. This disease has caused significant economic losses involving both onion seed and bulb crops produced in Washington. Cultural, biological, and chemical methods are available to control onion thrips. Usually a combination of these methods is best. Controlling thrips also reduces the number of thrips functioning as a virus vector, thus reducing the incidence of iris yellow spot disease."--Abstract.
