The One I Knew the Best of All traces the early life of Frances Hodgson Burnett. In it she relates her earliest memories as a child in a North Manchester middle-class home and, following her father's death, in Salford. Although a well-behaved little girl she relates her fascination with "back street" children and their language - the Lancashire dialect - which she sets out to learn. At the same time she provides a vivid description of the differences in the lives of those who laboured to produce Lancashire's wealth and those who took possession of it. Finally she deals with the American Civil War - the consequent Lancashire Cotton Famine - its devastating effects - her family's impoverishment and subsequent flight across the Atlantic. Here, in Tennessee, they make a new life, and Frances is forced to examine ways they can make a living. A brilliant, entertaining and thought provoking read. Published in support of The Working Class Movement Library, Salford, M5 4WX.

It is not one little girl alone whose experiences are here recorded, but, as the author justly claims, it is the story of any child with an imagination. Mrs. Burnett's recollections go back to a very early age; she remembers events that happened before she was three years old, and she cannot remember a time when she was not capable of forming decided opinions about things. Mrs. Burnett has written many attractive books—books that have made friends for her all over the world—but she has never written a book more charming than this. The naiveté, candor, and utter unpretentiousness of it are qualities that give it an enduring fascination.

It was so difficult to adjust them to his little blue-lipped face and small, insignificant figure which his clothes seemed always rather too large for. " But he would be quite different," the Small Person persisted obstinately to herself as her only consolation. " He would be quite different and he would be dressed in white robes." The draperies she tried to see him in were something of the nature of a very voluminous, very white night-gown--but at all events they were " quite different." The interest of all this is that what we begin with at seven we seem to end with at seventy. How are we less vague--what more do we know? Nothing--nothing---nothing, but that whatever it is--wherever it is--it is " quite different." In the years which lie between we have learned more geography, more astronomy, we have learned that the blue is space and the clouds are vapor, but what more definite, but that we clamor for something, we plead for something, we must have something, we ought to have something " quite different." Somebody--probably it was the executive, practical little girl who had had the energy and ability to hustle the vague Small Person into th-church at the Grantham wedding---somebody proposed that two or three select ones should go to Alfie's home and ask to be allowed to " see " him. The Small Person was awed. She wanted very much to see him--what was left of him after he had become an angel. " His soul has gone to Heaven, his body is only dust," that was what was always said. She somehow wanted to look at the poor little body which was only dust. " Perhaps we oughtn't to go," she said, timorously. " Perhaps they won't like us to see him." But she was taken. Somebody else had been and nobody had seemed...

Book excerpt: Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (24 November 1849 - 29 October 1924) was an English-American novelist and playwright. She is best known for the three children's novels Little Lord Fauntleroy (published in 1885-1886), A Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1911). Frances Eliza Hodgson was born in Cheetham, England. After her father died in 1852, the family fell on straitened circumstances and in 1865 immigrated to the United States, settling near Knoxville, Tennessee. There Frances began writing to help earn money for the family, publishing stories in magazines from the age of 19. In 1870, her mother died, and in 1872 Frances married Swan Burnett, who became a medical doctor. The Burnetts lived for two years in Paris, where their two sons were born, before returning to the United States to live in Washington, D.C., Burnett then began to write novels, the first of which (That Lass o' Lowrie's), was published to good reviews. Little Lord Fauntleroy was published in 1886 and made her a popular writer of children's fiction, although her romantic adult novels written in the 1890s were also popular. She wrote and helped to produce stage versions of Little Lord Fauntleroy and A Little Princess. Burnett enjoyed socializing and lived a lavish lifestyle. Beginning in the 1880s, she began to travel to England frequently and in the 1890s bought a home there where she wrote The Secret Garden. Her oldest son, Lionel, died of tuberculosis in 1890, which caused a relapse of the depression she had struggled with for much of her life. She divorced Swan Burnett in 1898, married Stephen Townsend in 1900, and divorced him in 1902. A few years later she settled in Nassau County, Long Island, where she died in 1924 and is buried in Roslyn Cemetery. In 1936 a memorial sculpture by Bessie Potter Vonnoh was erected in her honour in Central Park's Conservatory Garden. The statue depicts her two famous Secret Garden characters, Mary and Dickon.... Reginald Bathurst Birch (May 2, 1856 - June 17, 1943) was an English-American artist and illustrator. He was best known for his depiction of the titular hero of Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1886 novel Little Lord Fauntleroy, which started a craze in juvenile fashion. While his illustrated corpus has eclipsed his other work, he was also an accomplished painter of portraits and landscapes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When she was a teenager, author Frances Hodgson Burnett (Little Lord Fauntleroy, The Secret Garden) moved with her family from a comfortable existence in Manchester, England, to East Tennessee. It was 1865, and the scars of the American Civil War were still visible, particularly in Knoxville where the Hodgsons located. It was not an easy place for a teenage girl to be. But Frances made the best of it. As Jack Neely writes in the introduction: "It was an extreme shift for what had been an affluent middle-class big-city family to live in near-frontier conditions, without even enough income to feed themselves well. With a good measure of romanticism, Frances adapted. She had been a fan of the Leatherstocking Tales of James Fenimore Cooper, whose frontier adventures were as popular in England as in America. She saw elements of his famous settings in her new home." It was here, in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains, that Frances began her extraordinary writing career. And it was here that she returned, in her mind's vision, to write a remarkable and often overlooked autobiographical novel, The One I Knew the Best of All. The novel is a delightful account of a childhood, protected but full of good stories and small adventures. It is told from the child's point of view and describes the emotions of the Small Person -- as Frances coyly refers to herself -- as she encounters relatives, friends, adults who would take advantage of her and those who would befriend her. She meets the realities of death and loss and the joys of achievement and friendship. She develops a taste for reading, then for storytelling, and finally for writing. Those who want to know about Frances and how she began her long and wildly successful writing career need to read this book. Those who want insights about how a bright and innocent child sees the world and develops the wherewithal to face it should study this book. Those who simply want a good story -- one that your children could read or you could read to them -- should obtain this book and put it in an honored place in your library. Nothing else like it exists. This book is the first the Southern Appalachian Studies Editions, published by the Blount County Friends of the Library in Maryville, Tennessee. The purpose of the series is to bring out new editions of work by writers who have connections to East Tennessee.

Imagine, then, the excitement that Howard Carson, an amateur archeologist at best, experienced when in crossing the perimeter of an abandoned excavation site he felt the ground give way beneath him and found himself at the bottom of a shaft, which, judging from the DO NOT DISTURB sign hanging from an archaic doorknob, was clearly the entrance to a still-sealed burial chamber. Carson's incredible discoveries, including the remains of two bodies, one of then on a ceremonial bed facing an altar that appeared to be a means of communicating with the Gods and the other lying in a porcelain sarcophagus in the Inner Chamber, permitted him to piece together the whole fabric of that extraordinary civilization.
