Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred and Seventh Annual Report of Perkins Institution and Massachusetts School for the Blind, 1938 Your Board of Trustees submits, herewith, its annual report, which includes detailed reports of the Director and Treasurer and brief reports from the heads of the various departments. The year has been one of satisfactory progress. The Class of 1938 graduating in June was the largest in the history of the School. Twenty-one received diplomas and, in addition, one received a certificate in Manual Training and one in Pianoforte Tuning. One of those receiving the regular school diplomas was Tad Chapman, a deaf-blind boy, - a notable achievement. Early in the year, Chapman and Miss Inis B. Hall, head of our deaf-blind Department, received an invitation from the Society for the Blind in South Africa to visit there and be the guests of the Society. The trip was taken during the summer and proved a great success. Chapman demonstrated that the education of a deaf blind boy was possible, and Miss Hall's experience and knowledge of dfiaf-blind education was of inestimable assistance to those engaged in that work in South Africa. Upon his return Chapman visited the School, and one morning at chapel exercises told of his experiences during the trip, - again, a notable achievement for a deaf-blind boy to address a large gathering in a clear and very interesting way.
