Book excerpt: It is 2434 in a faraway galaxy where the Bria race has just been wiped out. Commander Iaxxlys, the leader of the Larin fleet ostensibly responsible for the annihilation of the Bria, is awaiting execution. Spurred by the notion that the council has been infiltrated, Iaxxlyss first officer breaks him out of his holding cell and together, with several troops, the two escape the planet in an effort to save their people from extinction. The Larin civil war has officially begun. One year later after Captain Radford of the Innerstellar Space Fleet is ordered to investigate a mysterious vessel that has appeared several light years away, he and his squadron are sent straight into a brutal encounter with an unknown enemy. After the Fleet learns they are the focus of the Larin civil war and prepare to defend the Sol System, Radford discovers the Larins may not be acting of their own accord. As a plot is revealed to wipe out all intelligent life and a mysterious race appears, now only time will tell if the Larins and the humans can put their differences aside to prevent mysterious forces from enveloping the galaxy. The Omega Endeavor is the gripping tale of an epic space battle between good and evil as the future of mankind hangs precariously in the balance.

Book excerpt: There are numerous examples in the history of science when the parallel develop ments of two or more disciplines, methodologies, technologies or theoretical in sights have converged to produce significant scientific advances. The decades following the 1950s have produced several such significant advances, as a result of a convergence of developments in molecular biology and in solid state-based electronics instrumentation. Since one of these areas of significant advancement, analytical ultracentrifu gation, has been undergoing a renaissance, we thought it would be a useful activity to call upon a group of researchers who have been developing either the experi mental or theoretical aspects of the methodology and gather in one place a group of articles summarizing the current status of the field. The success of recombinant DNA methodologies at producing biologically active macromolecules of commer cial interest has evoked interests in mechanisms of function. Pursuit of the related questions has emphasized the importance of studies of macromolecular binding and interaction. Several contributions to this volume remind us that analytical ultra centrifugation is rigorously based on solid thermodynamic theory and, as such, is fully capable of providing comprehensive quantitative descriptions of molecular interactions in solution. Furthermore, a number of the chapters provide examples, along with innovative methods for carrying out these characterizations. The past decade has seen several developments that reflect the rebirth of interest in analytical ultracentrifugation.

Book excerpt: Responsiveness - conceived of as an organization's ability to listen, understand and respond to demands put to it by its stakeholders - has become a crucial, yet underresearched concept in strategic change and organization development. Claus Jacobs develops a concept of enactive responsiveness that transcends the traditional stimulus-response metaphor by re-introducing the dialogical and relational dimensions of responsiveness.

Book excerpt: The sixth volume of Brian Stableford's future history concludes the series and also refers back to its beginnings. Through five earlier volumes, Inherit the Earth, Architects of Emortality, The Fountains of Youth, The Cassandra Complex, and Dark Ararat, Stableford has mapped out for us in engaging stories the wonderful and sometimes disturbing world of the next thousand years, on Earth, throughout the solar system, and to worlds beyond, with emphasis on huge sociological changes and extraordinary alterations in the biological life of humans. It is one of the most detailed and plausible and fascinating projections in all of science fiction. Now, in The Omega Expedition, it takes us into another millennium, and is complete. The Omega Expedition is a philosophical novel, a sequel to The Fountains of Youth. It is the extraordinary life history of Adam Zimmerman, developer of the technology of emortality. The main part of the narrative describes his long-delayed awakening into the 35th century, a time of true immortals. His exotic hosts--inhabitants of a microworld in the outer solar system--have recruited various interested parties to help with the resurrection project, one of whom (inevitably) is the famous historian of death, the immortal Mortimer Gray, who is exceedingly anxious to gain what insight he can into the vagaries of the mortal mind. The Omega Expedition is a richly textured, serious SF novel that will resound like a huge bell, ringing down the halls of science fiction for years to come. White, in Testimonies, Series B, No. 2, p. 16, wrote the following: " Be not deceived; many will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. We have now before us the alpha of his danger. The omega will be of a most startling nature." Julius Gilbert White (1878-1955) well understood this message, he could clearly see what the alpha of apostasy was and what the omega would be, and he also understood the dangers involved. In this work the reader will find a message that is easy to understand, and it is our hope that the materials found in it will be of great value to all who open its pages with the purpose of wanting to know more of God's holy will.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like The Omega Project the premise behind this book starts back during World War Two with General William Donovan, holder of the Army’s four top medals including the CMH, and the Office of Strategic Services better known as the O.S.S. To most people outside of the Department of State it was obvious that communism was incompatible with the American way of life. Therefore the Russians were most likely to become our next major enemy. Based upon the OSS Project Omega plan and authorized by President Truman, a series of secret shelters were built throughout the United States. Each shelter designed to be self-sufficient for long term survival and very comfortable for long term living. So what would life be like in one of these secret bases? What would people do while sitting around waiting for the end of the world as we knew it? In this series many of the inhabitants work for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency doing advanced research developing very advanced technology. So, this book is part history, part science fiction and a lot of speculation. What would future everyday life look like? How would door locks work? How about access to your computer? How about your computer itself? How does one get from place to place in this futuristic world? These items must be looked at from the standpoint of a three or four generation advancement.

Book excerpt: “A masterpiece of multidisciplinary scholarship that clearly demonstrates the contemporary relevance of black fraternities and sororities.” —Hasan Kwame Jeffries, author of Bloody Lowndes During the twentieth century, black Greek-Letter organizations (BGLOs) united college students dedicated to excellence, fostered kinship, and uplifted African Americans. Members of these organizations include remarkable and influential individuals such as Martin Luther King Jr., Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, novelist Toni Morrison, and Wall Street pioneer Reginald F. Lewis. Despite the profound influence of these groups, many now question the continuing relevance of BGLOs, arguing that their golden age has passed. To foster a greater engagement with the history and contributions of BGLOs, Black Greek-Letter Organizations in the Twenty-first Century brings together an impressive group of authors to explore the contributions and continuing possibilities of BGLOs and their members. Editor Gregory S. Parks and the contributing authors provide historical context for the development of BGLOs, exploring their service activities as well as their relationships with other prominent African American institutions. Both internally and externally, BGLOs struggle to forge a relevant identity for the new century. Internally, these groups wrestle with many issues, including hazing, homophobia, petty intergroup competition, and the difficulty of bridging the divide between college and alumni members. Externally, BGLOs face the challenge of rededicating themselves to their communities and leading an aggressive campaign against modern forms of racism, sexism, and other types of fear-driven behavior. By embracing the history of these organizations and exploring their continuing viability and relevance, Black Greek-Letter Organizations in the Twenty-first Century demonstrates that BGLOs can create a positive and enduring future and that their most important work lies ahead.

Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, black Greek-Letter organizations (BGLOs) united college students dedicated to excellence, fostered kinship, and uplifted African Americans. Partly because of their perceived link to hip-hop culture, black fraternities and sororities have been unfairly reduced to a media stereotype—a world of hazing without any real substance. The general public knows very little about BGLOs, and surprisingly the members themselves often do not have a thorough understanding of their history and culture or of the issues currently facing their organizations. To foster a greater engagement with the history and contributions of BGLOs, Black Greek-Letter Organizations in the Twenty-first Century: Our Fight Has Just Begun brings together an impressive group of authors to explore the contributions and continuing possibilities of BGLOs and their members. Editor Gregory S. Parks and the contributing authors provide historical context for the development of BGLOs, exploring their service activities as well as their relationships with other prominent African American institutions. The book examines BGLOs' responses to a number of contemporary issues, including non-black membership, homosexuality within BGLOs, and the perception of BGLOs as educated gangs. As illustrated by the organized response of BGLO members to the racial injustice they observed in Jena, Louisiana, these organizations still have a vital mission.
