Book excerpt: Who would have thought that dwarf cedar trees growing on the Niagara Escarpment could live to be nearly 2000 years old. Or that the small bonsai cedars lining the shorelines of the Canadian shield measure their ages in centuries. Old growth pine trees in Temagami are often over 10 stories tall, but these are young sprouts compared to trees of yesteryear, which were as much as 20 stories high. Ontario's old growth forests are fantastical and mysterious, but who knows where to find one. Most people in this province live within an hour's drive of an old growth forest, but do not know it. The ecology of these stands is engrossing. Fire scars on these trees, for example, provide an indisputable record of forest fire activity in Ontario. Small hemlock saplings, over 100 years old, have been growing at infinitesimal rates, waiting for a gap to open in the forest canopy.
Download or read book Nature's Temples written by Joan Maloof and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Maloof eloquently urges us to cherish the wildness of what little old-growth woodlands we have left. . . . Not only are they home to the richest diversity of creatures, but they work hard for humans too.” —New York Times Book Review An old-growth forest is one that has formed naturally over a long period of time with little or no disturbance from humankind. They are increasingly rare and largely misunderstood. In Nature’s Temples, Joan Maloof, the director of the Old-Growth Forest Network, makes a heartfelt and passionate case for their importance. This evocative and accessible narrative defines old-growth and provides a brief history of forests. It offers a rare view into how the life-forms in an ancient, undisturbed forest—including not only its majestic trees but also its insects, plant life, fungi, and mammals—differ from the life-forms in a forest manipulated by humans. What emerges is a portrait of a beautiful, intricate, and fragile ecosystem that now exists only in scattered fragments. Black-and-white illustrations by Andrew Joslin help clarify scientific concepts and capture the beauty of ancient trees.

Download or read book Presettlement Forest in Southern Ontario, Ecosystems Measured Through a Cultural Prism written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper adds to current understanding of the former & present status of old growth forest in Ontario. It first outlines the history of the province's forests since the last deglaciation, the settlement & land clearance patterns that occurred after arrival of Europeans, and the extent of original woodland still existing in southern Ontario. This is followed by two case studies illustrating typical settlement-area landscapes, based on analysis of historical land survey data, that question the popular view of pine as being the dominant species in old growth Ontario forests. Implications of the findings for forest restoration are discussed.
