Book excerpt: "Clements Library's catalogue describes it as 'one of the most fascinating accounts of the life of a frontier hunter in print.'" Streeter. The book, says Graff, "is endlessly fascinating, for while some of the episodes are close to fancy, most of them are probably based on fact, if not wholly accurate. Many of Edwards' adventures occurred in Michigan." "The narrative is quite interesting, verging in numerous instances into romance, but it nevertheless has every appearance of being true to fact. Most of the incidents enumerated took place in Pickaway and Hancock Counties." Thomson.

Book excerpt: Born in Pennsylvania in 1810, Edwards' family moved to Ohio in 1812. Upon reaching adulthood, Edwards took up the life of a hunter in order to support his family. By means of hunting and tracking with dogs Edwards was able to make a comfortable life hunting bear, deer, racoon, wolf, wild cats, as well as by fishing the rivers. Life was full of danger from the wild animals as well as Indians and other hunters which inhabited the region. There were frequent battles with Indians over game, as Edwards relates: "I told the Indians this was my bear they had caught, and I was going to have it ... They did not like this disposition of their game, and one said, " No, me give you two dollars and keep the bear." I told him no, I would have the bear-skin, and the dog too; and if my dogs chased any more bear into the woods and they caught them, I should take them from them, and accordingly shouldered the skin and started for home. The Indians cast after me an angry look, but durst not follow me." On another occasion when forty Indians, accosted Edwards, he took on the entire group: "...This so enraged the Indians that one of them drew a club and struck me upon the nose, making it bleed badly. Before this, I had been very much frightened, but now all fear forsook me and I replied to his civility with a blow from my fist just over his eye, which laid him senseless at my feet. Another came furiously toward me and attempted to catch my legs...." Sometimes the table were turned on Edwards and his dogs by the prey they had tracked: "As he was passing the boat, I sprung upon his back and clinched him by the horns. The water was not quite so favorable a place for fighting with a sturdy buck as terra firma and the brave little animal soon had the best of the bargain, getting me underneath his feet and giving me such a drubbing as I never got from man or beast, before or since ...." Tracking bears was particularly fraught with dangers: "...I determined then, if I died, to die fighting. I turned about and met the bear face to face,-and most fortunately for me, poor Madge, whom we had left for mortally wounded, appeared just at this crisis for my deliverance, and attracted the bear's attention just as she was springing with open paws upon me ..." Edwards was not above staging a fight between a captured wolf and a dog for sport, as he relates: "...we took sharp sticks and struck at him until we made him mad, and then again set the dog upon him. A bloody battle ensued in which the wolf proved victorious, the dog being glad to retreat with the loss of one of his eyes." Interestingly, at this time in Ohio there were mammoth sturgeon plying its waters, which were too tempting for Edwards to pass up: "... I fastened a loop of the cord that was attached to the spear around my left hand, and with the instrument of death firmly clenched in my right, I made a bold start toward the young leviathan. I at length swam safely to the shore, the subjugated sturgeon following me at a rapid rate. My friends congratulated me upon having accomplished a very daring feat. We drew the fish ashore, and he measured nine feet in length." Edwards' book in an unvarnished, straight-forward and simple style give the reader an interesting look into the life of a backwoods Ohio hunter in the early 1800s, probably better than any other book.

Book excerpt: Ohio has nurtured some of the most celebrated deer-hunting ground in the country, with a deer population of about 650,000 and well over 400,000 sportsmen pursuing them. From the heyday of the Native American deer slayer to the modern-day huntsman, outdoorsman and writer Robert Loewendick relays his knowledge of Ohio deer hunting and history with passion and grace. Hitting all four corners of the state and everything in between, Loewendick shares the conservation efforts that made Ohio a deer-hunting mecca while including stories of the biggest trophies and others of the most bizarre nature, like that of a buck that plays dead and another that survives an arrow through the head.

THE SQUIRREL HUNTERS OF OHIO; OR, GLIMPSES OF PIONEER LIFE. CHAPTER I. OHIO--EARLY SETTLEMENTS. From the time the Mayflower landed at Fort Harmar (Marietta) in 1788 until 1795, emigration had not materially increased the population of the North-west, owing to the unstable and dissatisfied condition of the Indians. All this time, the soldier, who had served his time in the cause of independence and been honorably discharged without pay: --the povertystricken patriot, unable to procure subsistence for himself and family in the bankrupt colonies, had been listening to accounts of a land "flowing with milk and honey," and was anxious to get there. It was described as a country "fertile as heart could wish: "--"fair to look upon, and fragrant with the thousand fresh odors of the woods in early spring." The long cool aisles leading away into mazes of vernal green where the swift deer bounded by unmolested and as yet unscared (i) by the sound of the woodman's ax or the sharp ring of the rifle. "He could imagine the wooded slopes and the tall grass of the plain jeweled with strange and brilliant flowers;' but there the redman had his field of corn, and would defend his rights. The success of General Wayne in procuring terms of peace with the warlike tribes of Indians in the spring of 1795, caused such an influx of emigration into the Ohio division of the Northwest Territory, that in 1798 the population enabled the election of an Assembly which met the following year, and sent William Henry Harrison as a delegate to Congress. So rapidly did the country fill up with new settlements that the prospective state at the beginning of the nineteenth century was knocking at the door for admission, with all the pathways crowded by pedestrians--men, women, ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever look at a modern skyscraper or a vacant lot and wonder what was there before? Or maybe you have passed an old house and been curious about who lived there long ago. This richly illustrated new book celebrates Columbus, Ohio’s, two-hundred-year history and supplies intriguing stories about the city’s buildings and celebrated citizens, stopping at individual addresses, street corners, parks, and riverbanks where history was made. As Columbus celebrates its bicentennial in 2012, a guide to local history is very relevant. Like Columbus itself, the city’s history is underrated. Some events are of national importance; no one would deny that Abraham Lincoln’s funeral procession down High Street was a historical highlight. But the authors have also included a wealth of social and entertainment history from Columbus’s colorful history as state capital and destination for musicians, artists, and sports teams. The book is divided into seventeen chapters, each representing a section of the city, including Statehouse Square, German Village, and Franklinton, the city’s original settlement in 1797. Each chapter opens with an entertaining story that precedes the site listings. Sites are clearly numbered on maps in each section to make it easy for readers to visit the places that pique their interest. Many rare and historic photos are reproduced along with stunning contemporary images that offer insight into the ways Columbus has changed over the years. A Historical Guidebook to Old Columbus invites Columbus’s families to rediscover their city with a treasure trove of stories from its past and suggests to visitors and new residents many interesting places that they might not otherwise find. This new book is certain to amuse and inform for years to come.
