Book Synopsis The People's Game? by : Stephen Morrow
Download or read book The People's Game? written by Stephen Morrow and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beautiful game is big business. Football leagues worldwide are being dominated by clubs which are becoming richer and more powerful. Since the first edition of this book was published in 2003, much has changed in the industry. However the central challenge remains how best football, its leagues and clubs can navigate a path between the logic of the market and the logic of community (social), while also remaining focused on a sporting logic. In this second edition, author Stephen Morrow offers a critique of football’s economic structure, prevalent models of club ownership and governance, and new approaches to regulation that have emerged. The book also reflects on the Covid-19 pandemic and on ways in which it has illuminated many of the structural weaknesses inherent in football. It also offers an insight into the woman’s game and its financial development in some countries, as well discussing issues such as football’s response to environmental challenges. Drawing on theory and new literature from across relevant academic disciplines, this book seeks to make sense of the current challenges while also putting forward solutions as to how football can continue to harness and build on its social and community significance.

Book Synopsis Football Governance by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Culture, Media and Sport Committee
Download or read book Football Governance written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Culture, Media and Sport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee reported previously on domestic football governance in July 2011 (7th report of session 2010-12, HC 792-I, ISBN 9780215561114) after concerns were expressed by supporters and commentators about the sufficiency of checks and balances on financial management in football, as well as wider failures of governance. The report concluded that the Football Association - English football's governing body - was in need of urgent reform. The Committee said the leagues - especially the Premier League - had too great an influence over the decision-making processes of the Football Association. In particular the Committee was concerned that increasing commercialisation of the game, coupled with a lack of financial regulation, was leading to significant financial risk-taking among football clubs that threatens the game. The Committee has been very disappointed by the football authorities' response to its proposals for reform. While progress has been achieved, further reform is needed, especially in relation to the licensing model, the failure to ensure that membership of the Main Board, Council and influential committees is fully representative and balances interests adequately, and the way in which supporter engagement will operate at club level. Most fundamentally, the financial proposals were hugely disappointing, with the only really positive development being the eventual introduction of Financial Fair Play rules despite the football authorities' initial reluctance. The Committee issues an ultimatum to the game of English football: make the necessary reforms within 12 months or face possible legislation.
Book Synopsis A Sociology of Football in a Global Context by : Jamie Cleland
Download or read book A Sociology of Football in a Global Context written by Jamie Cleland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Association football is now the global sport, consumed in various ways by millions of people across the world. Throughout its history, football has been a catalyst as much for social cohesion, unity, excitement and integration as it can be for division, exclusion and discrimination. A Sociology of Football in a Global Context examines the historical, political, economic, social and cultural complexities of the game across Europe, Africa, Asia and North and South America. It analyses the key developments and sociological debates within football through a topic-based approach that concentrates on the history of football and its global diffusion; the role of violence; the global governance of the game by FIFA; race, racism and whiteness; gender and homophobia; the changing nature of fans; the media and football’s financial revolution; the transformation of players into global celebrities; and the growth of football leagues across the world. Using a range of examples from all over the world, each chapter highlights the different social and cultural changes football has seen, most notably since the 1990s, when its relationship with the mass media and other transnational networks became more important and financially lucrative.

The author also describes what it was like to tour the film of the book all around the world. Fully updated to include the HMRC win in the "Big Tax Case", this is a story of privilege, class and the old school tie laced with fear and loathing as David Murray's dream that trampled over Celtic but would ultimately become Rangers nightmare.
