This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Report provides an overview of the results of increased official import controls carried out by Member States of the European Union (EUMSs) on certain food and feed of non-animal origin from certain third countries, in accordance with Commission Implementing Regulation (EC) No 669/2009 from 25 January 2010 until it was repealed by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/1793 with effect from 14 December 2019. Food and feed subject to an increased level of official controls upon their entry into the EU were listed in Annex I to the Regulation. Controlled hazards comprised pesticide residues, mycotoxins, pathogenic microorganisms, and other hazards including contaminants, such as heavy metals, and additives. This Annex was reviewed periodically - on 31 occasions - by the European Commission (EC) to react swiftly to new available information, such as the outcome of identity and physical checks, including laboratory analysis, submitted by the EUMSs. 55 product groups/products within a product group, were de-listed by the Commission mainly due to action taken by third countries; and 71 new products/product groups were listed. For the majority of de-listed products, the control regime went back to the pre-listing situation (risk-based controls and no harmonised frequency at EU level). For one product, emergency measures were put in place. For 19 products/product groups, the frequency of checks was reduced, while it was incremented for 21 products/product groups. Between 2010 and 2019, around 924.000 consignments of listed feed and food of non-animal origin were presented at EU borders. Over 117.700 were sampled for laboratory analysis, of which 6334 were found in breach of EU legislation and prevented from entering the EU market. 88.401 laboratory analysis were carried out on 721.140 consignments of commodities such as peppers, tea, beans and peas and other vegetables and fruits, listed for the contamination risk of pesticide residues, corresponding to 78% of the total number of consignments of listed food and feed having reached EU borders between 2010 and 2019, and 75% of the total number of laboratory analysis performed by EUMSs. The non-compliance rate of 4,8% found is the third highest. 15.165 laboratory analysis were carried out on 105.821 consignments of commodities such as groundnuts, hazelnuts, pistachios, dried spices, dried grapes and dried vine fruits listed for the contamination risk of aflatoxins, corresponding to 13% of the checked consignments. The non-compliance rate of 7,4% is the second highest. The highest non-compliance rate of nearly 10% was reported for pathogenic microorganisms such as Salmonella and norovirus, for which a limited number of commodities are listed, including herbs and spices, and as of 2014 and 2017, betel leaves and Sesamum seeds respectively. 44.599 consignments, corresponding to less than 5% of the total number of consignments of listed food and feed, were presented at EU borders and were subject to 6.465 laboratory analysis. Finally, 7734 laboratory analysis were carried out on commodities listed for other hazards, corresponding to 5,7% of the total number of consignments, with a non-compliance rate of 3,8%. The new set of harmonised rules on import controls of food and feed of non-animal origin set in Regulation (EU) 2017/625 and Regulation (EU) 2019/1793 allow for simplification and modernisation of the European Union legal framework. The latter consolidates legal acts concerning reinforced controls and emergency measures establishing special import conditions and suspension of imports of food and feed from certain third countries. The lists of food and feed concerned are established and regularly reviewed on the basis of a known or emerging risk or because there is evidence of widespread serious non-compliance with the Union agrifood chain legislation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief aims at providing a general understanding of the rationale – scientific as well as political – behind EU policy and related risk management decisions in the area on non-animal food imports. Lately, various menaces associated with imported food and feed of non-animal origin appeared in the media: imported sprout seeds contaminated with E. coli, strawberries containing hepatitis A or noro viruses, to name but a few, are now as much discussed as the different well-known meat scandals. The authors explain the reinforced official controls at EU borders on certain imports of non-animal origin and the wide range of EU measures that currently foresee trade restrictions for imports presenting chemical and non-chemical ‘high risks’ from a public health perspective (so-called ‘emergency measures’). The Brief closely examines chemical (and also non-chemical) risks associated with imports of non-animal origin and their impact on human health. The authors also consider the role risk analysis is playing to underpin risk-management decisions at EU level, including the scientific output by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interestingly, some relief from today's woes may come from ancient human practices. While current agri-food production models rely on abundant supplies of water, energy, and arable land and generate significant greenhouse gas emissions in addition to forest and biodiversity loss, past practices point toward more affordable and sustainable paths. Different forms of insect farming and soilless crop farming, or hydroponics, have existed for centuries. In this report the authors make a persuasive case that frontier agriculture, particularly insect and hydroponic farming, can complement conventional agriculture. Both technologies reuse society's agricultural and organic industrial waste to produce nutritious food and animal feed without continuing to deplete the planet's land and water resources, thereby converting the world's wasteful linear food economy into a sustainable, circular food economy. As the report shows, insect and hydroponic farming can create jobs, diversify livelihoods, improve nutrition, and provide many other benefits in African and fragile, conflict-affected countries. Together with other investments in climate-smart agriculture, such as trees on farms, alternate wetting and drying rice systems, conservation agriculture, and sustainable livestock, these technologies are part of a promising menu of solutions that can help countries move their land, food, water, and agriculture systems toward greater sustainability and reduced emissions. This is a key consideration as the World Bank renews its commitment to support countries' climate action plans. This book is the Bank's first attempt to look at insect and hydroponic farming as possible solutions to the world's climate and food and nutrition security crisis and may represent a new chapter in the Bank's evolving efforts to help feed and sustain the planet.

Book excerpt: In this textbook we examine the extent to which moral values play a role as productive forces for companies and the economy as a whole, and explores the effect of ethical and unethical behavior at both levels. We show how ethics improves productivity, and provide specific ethics tools for practical application for both students and managers. Stemming from an overall interdisciplinary approach, this textbook fills a gap in the literature on ethics in business. Following a textbook structure, we first derive knowledge from scientific studies that are relevant for students, and then summarize the results. We explain ethical assessment approaches, and then provide an ethical assessment of economic behavior using case studies. Roleplaying and games are used to explain the behavior of people in relation to ethics. The 2nd edition has been completely revised and expanded to include new findings from the behavioral sciences (psychology, social psychology, sociology and behavioral economics). In particular, the research on emotions, motivation and group behavior have given rise to many new impulses in business ethics. In addition, new case studies and new chapters were included, like Politics and Morality, Theories of Justice, Global Ethics, and Institutions as Solutions to Specific Game Situations (game theory). This book is important for students and researchers as well as policymakers and business executives due to its focus on applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic, long described as the world’s last frontier, is quickly becoming our first frontier—the front line in a world of more diffuse power, sharper geopolitical competition, and deepening interdependencies between people and nature. A space of often-bitter cold, the Arctic is the fastest-warming place on earth. It is humanity’s canary in the coal mine—an early warning sign of the world’s climate crisis. The Arctic “regime” has pioneered many innovative means of governance among often-contentious state and non-state actors. Instead of being the “last white dot on the map,” the Arctic is where the contours of our rapidly evolving world may first be glimpsed. In this book, scholars and practitioners—from Anchorage to Moscow, from Nuuk to Hong Kong—explore the huge political, legal, social, economic, geostrategic and environmental challenges confronting the Arctic regime, and what this means for the future of world order.
