Book excerpt: Max McCoy, the Spur Award-winning author of Damnation Road, continues his American Western saga of the Ghost Rifle as the violence and bloodshed the weapon caused return to haunt the man who created it . . . THE WEAPON AND THE WILDERNESS Ten years have passed since Jack Picaro lost his Ghost Rifle—the firearm he invented, the one that never missed its target. The loss of the rifle calmed the hellraiser in his soul. Instead of returning to the gambling halls and whiskey bars of St. Louis, Jack has spent the last decade as a fur trapper in Wyoming’s Wild River Range, married to Sky, the daughter of an Arikara war chief. Then, after helping rescue U.S. soldiers captured by Crow Indians in the Rocky Mountains, Jack hears the familiar bell-like report of his Ghost Rifle. Determined to retrieve his deadly property, he travels deep into Lakota territory, facing down old enemies—and resuming old sinful habits—unaware of what awaits him when he eventually returns home to his family. “Few Western writers today can spin a tale with style, wit, and rawness better than Max McCoy.” —Johnny D. Boggs, Western Heritage and Spur Award-winning author of West Texas Kill

So journey back to the Trojan War with Homer and relive the grandest adventure of all times. The Odyssey: Journey with Ulysses as he battles to bring his victorious, but decimated, troops home from the Trojan War, dogged by the wrath of the god Poseidon at every turn. Having been away for twenty years, little does he know what awaits him when he finally makes his way home. These two books are some of the most import books in the literary cannon, having influenced virtually every adventure tale ever told. And yet they are still accessible and immediate and now you can have both in one binding.

Download or read book The Odyssey of the Western Spirit written by Jack Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Odyssey of the Western Spirit traces the development of consciousness and then self-consciousness from its earliest beginnings in primitive life to its complex manifestation in our own times. The central focus is to describe the tremendous power that is thinking as that thinking has gone about the task of building the world in which we live. Three fundamental questions structure this presentation. First of all, what is the general condition for the possibility of human existence? Or, what is the essential common denominator that makes us all human, regardless of time, place, and circumstance? Secondly, what are the specific conditions for the possibility of human existence in the Western world? Or, what is the specific difference that defines the West as it has become the most powerful cultural formation in history? Thirdly, where do we go from here? Or, with the end of the Cold War, what opportunities present themselves that could put the world onto the high road of prosperity and goodwill? The Odyssey is a philosophical and historical account that places into unique perspective the threshold upon which the world now stands and concludes with a proposal for a new political party that would stand at the Center. Download or read book Alcibiades written by Jack Meyer and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is he just a troublemaker with an attitude? Or will this spunky youth grow up to do something great? The populace of Athens holds varied opinions about Alcibiades, a handsome boy who exhibits a devious and audacious personality. Based on historical record, author Jack Meyer reconstructs the life of Alcibiades, a man who uniquely impacted classical Athens during the Peloponnesian War. An orphan, Alcibiades grew up in the household of Pericles, was Socrates' favorite student, and was immensely handsome and rich. This narrative tells the story of the stunning career of this brilliant tactical military commander, persuasive orator, and consummate traitor who switched sides three times during the war. The city's own favorite son, this product of the Golden Age, was a man as morally corrupt as he was convincingly eloquent. The reconstruction of Alcibiades' story breeds both fiction and farce, and this story of the Greek experience serves as an analogue for a critique of today's American foreign policy.

Greek culture also significantly impacted the development of literature and education, beginning with the Romans and expanding to Europe and the West. The best-known literary masterpiece of the Archaic Greek period is the so-called Homeric epics – The Illiad and The Odyssey – and The Homeric Hymns.
Book Synopsis Gu Hongming's Eccentric Chinese Odyssey by : Chunmei Du
Download or read book Gu Hongming's Eccentric Chinese Odyssey written by Chunmei Du and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for his ultraconservatism and eccentricity, Gu Hongming (1857-1928) remains one of the most controversial figures in modern Chinese intellectual history. A former member of the colonial elite from Penang who was educated in Europe, Gu, in his late twenties, became a Qing loyalist and Confucian spokesman who also defended concubinage, footbinding, and the queue. Seen as a reactionary by his Chinese contemporaries, Gu nevertheless gained fame as an Eastern prophet following the carnage of World War I, often paired with Rabindranath Tagore and Leo Tolstoy by Western and Japanese intellectuals. Rather than resort to the typical conception of Gu as an inscrutable eccentric, Chunmei Du argues that Gu was a trickster-sage figure who fought modern Western civilization in a time dominated by industrial power, utilitarian values, and imperialist expansion. A shape-shifter, Gu was by turns a lampooning jester, defying modern political and economic systems and, at other times, an avenging cultural hero who denounced colonial ideologies with formidable intellect, symbolic performances, and calculated pranks. A cultural amphibian, Gu transformed from an "imitation Western man" to "a Chinaman again," and reinterpreted, performed, and embodied "authentic Chineseness" in a time when China itself was adopting the new identity of a modern nation-state. Gu Hongming's Eccentric Chinese Odyssey is the first comprehensive study in English of Gu Hongming, both the private individual and the public cultural figure. It examines the controversial scholar's intellectual and psychological journeys across geographical, national, and cultural boundaries in new global contexts. In addition to complicating existing studies of Chinese conservatism and global discussions on civilization around the World War I era, the book sheds new light on the contested notion of authenticity within the Chinese diaspora and the psychological impact of colonialism.

Book excerpt: On the basis of principle, agenda, and policy, center Democrat and center Republican have more in common with each other than each have with their respective extremes. Accordingly, it would be possible to build on this intentionally ignored consensus as the basis of a Center Party. At this middle ground, this in-between, a political agenda could be considered that is free of the polarizations of the Left and the Right.
