Book excerpt: The Śrīḍākārṇavamahāyoginītantrarāja (abbreviated to Ḍākārṇava, “Ocean of Ḍākas or Heroes”) is one of the last scriptures belonging to the Buddhist Saṃvara tradition in South Asia. It was composed in the eastern area of the Indian subcontinent sometime between the late 10th and 12th centuries, and its extant version was most likely compiled around the early 12th century. Chapter 15 of the Ḍākārṇava, (hereafter Ḍākārṇava 15) teaches a large-scale and elaborate maṇḍala of the highest god Heruka that comprises 986 major deities. This monograph presents the first critical edition and English translation (with annotation) of the Sanskrit text of the Ḍākārṇava 15, elucidates its form and meanings, and clarifies its significance in the history of Buddhism in South Asia. I also provide the first critical edition and English translation (with annotation) of Jayasena's Ratnapadmarāganidhi ("Precious Ruby Treasury," composed in the 12th century), which is the oldest manual for visualizing the Heruka maṇḍala of the Ḍākārṇava 15. In the last stage of the history of Tantric Buddhism in India, when various Buddhist Tantric traditions were already present, some texts were composed, such as the Kālacakratantra and the Vajrāvalī of Abhayākaragupta. These texts provide inclusive Tantric systems in which various preceding traditions are integrated and reorganized. The Ḍākārṇava is one such text. The Heruka maṇḍala in the Ḍākārṇava 15 is comprehensive and integrates deities from various Tantric traditions and components of the Buddhist cosmos within the framework of the Saṃvara system.

Book excerpt: Adventure on the high seas! WHAM! The Pliny jolts as if Black Beard himself has just punched her in the belly. Pedro and I slide and smack--bang--into the bulwark. "We're grounded," cries the first mate. "We've hit a shoal!" In May of 1882, a large steamship ran aground off the coast of New Jersey. Elisa Carbone imagines what it was like for two boys on that ship: waking up in the middle of the night, waves crashing over the side, the storm too big to lower the lifeboats. And then the flashing of light from shore--the surfmen, true "heroes of the surf," come to rescue them. The award-winning author's meticulous research combined with Nancy Carpenter's spectacular illustrations make this thrilling adventure on the high seas one not to be missed!

In addition to remembering those who passed away in those dark days of war, a sincere debt of gratitude is owed to all those now in their twilight years who gave all that they had for King and Country. In this new and revised third edition, with additional material to celebrate the lives of D-Day and Arnhem veterans, Gary Bridson-Daley presents 46 of over 150 interviews he conducted with veterans over recent years, adding to the history books the words and the original poetry of those who fought and supported the war effort to ensure freedom, peace and prosperity for generations to come. From each corner of the British Isles and every armed service, from Dam Buster George 'Johnny' Johnson through to riveter Susan Jones: heroes, all.

Book excerpt: [Note: This book was written by a 10 year old kid for other kids of ages 8 to 12.] As Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, and their dog Olympian journey out to sea to defeat a Titan and find the god of the sea, the trio encounters sea creatures and animals that tell them of the Titan Oceanus and his might. They act pretty abnormally (according to Zeus) when they see or hear about Poseidon. One sea horse even says, “We await you, our leader.” And then Poseidon is captured by a monster and is presumed dead. But what does this mean? What is happening? What does Poseidon have to do with all of this? Through raging battles and conflicts, the trio finally gets back together and meets Oceanus, a fifteen foot tall giant with a large golden trident. But at the end of their adventure, the god of the sea rises, with greater and more herculean aura and power than anything Zeus had ever seen his entire life.

The trio encounter sea creatures and animals that tell them of the Titan Oceanus and his might. They act pretty abnormally (according to Zeus) when they see or hear about Poseidon. One sea horse even says, "We await you, our leader." And then Poseidon is captured by a monster and is presumed dead. But what does this mean? What is happening? And what does Poseidon have to do with all of this? Through raging battles and conflicts, the trio finally gets back together and meets Oceanus, a fifteen foot tall giant with a large, golden trident.
