Book excerpt: THE OAK COLLECTOR; A GUIDE TO THE COLLECTION OF OLD OAK AND SIMPLE COTTAGE FURNITURE BY MacIVER PERCIVAL. PREFACE: THE Oak Collector, like all the other volumes of the Collector series, is intended for the lover of old things who has to be careful what he pays for them. The man who has been in my mind while writing it, is one who has not a great deal of money to spend and none to waste. He has no spare space either in which to keep useless treasures, so has to buy things which will not only be a delight to the eye but a pleasure to use. I hope he will find in this book information which will help him to acquire what he wants and to understand something of its history . The sturdy oak furniture which our fore- fathers used has in very many cases come down to us in perfect condition, so that it can be taken into our daily lives without renovation or alteration. We cannot but respect those craftsmen who, two or three hundred years ago, plied their trade with such skill that the joints they made and the panels they framed are to-day often without a crack or shake. It is customary for books on oak furniture to close abruptly with the end of the seventeenth century and to ignore the oak furniture of the eighteenth altogether as being unworthy of notice. It is not to be denied that this late oak lacks the courtly grace of the contemporary walnut and mahogany, but the country squire, the farmer, and the good folk of the country- side generally, would have made short work of the finer furniture if they had come across it in the inn parlour or farmhouse kitchen, and it was for such situations that the greater part of the oak furniture of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was made...

Book Synopsis The Oak Leaves Collection: The Oak Leaves / On Sparrow Hill by : Maureen Lang
Download or read book The Oak Leaves Collection: The Oak Leaves / On Sparrow Hill written by Maureen Lang and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection bundles two of Maureen Lang’s “old and new” fiction titles into one e-book for a great value! The Oak Leaves: Two time periods—Regency England and contemporary Chicago—are woven together when Talie Ingram finds an old journal belonging to her great-great-great grandmother, Cosima Escott. Through Cosima’s entries, Talie learns that her family was once considered cursed with feebleminded offspring, the result of a genetic disorder (Fragile-X) that may have been passed down to Talie and her sister. Unwilling to face the implications their discovery might have on her own life, Talie tucks the journal back into secrecy, until she begins to see signs of developmental delay in her son. On Sparrow Hill: Two time periods—Victorian Ireland and contemporary England—are again woven together in this sequel to The Oak Leaves. Rebecca Seabrooke is a commercial manager for Quentin Hollinworth’s family manor and is focused on two things: running the best historical home in the country and forgetting about the childhood crush she’s had on Quentin ever since her father worked as the valet for his family. They don’t, after all, run in the same social circles. When Quentin’s distant cousin Dana Martin Walker comes to visit the Hollinworth estate, Rebecca realizes she must confront some of her preconceived ideas about herself . . . and about Quentin. Dana wants to learn more about her ancestors—especially about Berrie Hamilton, who in 1852 decided to fulfill her sister-in-law’s dream of opening a school for the mentally challenged. Dana also discovers that, despite their precautions, she and her husband are expecting, and their unborn child may turn out to be like many of Berrie’s students. It will take reading Berrie’s letters—written a century ago—for Dana and Rebecca to learn the importance of serving others and to realize that ultimately, even our best-laid plans are not always God’s plans.
Book Synopsis From Compositors to Collectors by : John Hinks
Download or read book From Compositors to Collectors written by John Hinks and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this collection trace texts from their creation and printing through to their publication, dissemination, and collection. In doing so, they show how production processes change texts and how collectors subsequently appropriate them for their own ends. By examining the diverse activities of those involved in both textual creation and collection over a long period, these essays highlight both continuities and changes in the book trade. Taken together, this collection offers considerable new insights into many facets of the book trade, ranging from creation to consumption. This newest addition to the Print Networks series includes nineteen essays from leading book history scholars, including Mariko Nagase, Daniel Cook, Stephen Brown, Brian Hillyard, Catherine Delafield, Rob Allen, Rachel Bower, Iain Beavan, and more. The "compositors" section covers everything from The Mayor of Quinborough, published in 1661, to My Name is Salma, published in 2007. Essays on "collectors" include Dr. James Fraser, Titus Wheatcroft, Sir Walter Scott, the USA Armed Services, and more. The book is illustrated throughout in black and white. Available in the UK from The British Library.
