From that point on the plot lines diverge completely. While The Number of the Beast morphs into something very different, more representative of later Heinlein works, The Pursuit of the Pankera remains on target with a much more traditional Heinleinesque storyline and ending, reminiscent of his earlier works. The Pursuit of the Pankera was never published and there have been many competing theories as to why (including significant copyright issues in 1977). Over time the manuscript was largely forgotten but survived in fragments. A recent re-examination of these fragments, however, made it clear that put together in the right order they constituted the complete novel. And here it finally is: Robert A. Heinlein's audacious experiment. A fitting farewell from one of the most inventive science fiction writers to have ever lived: a parallel novel about parallel universes as well as a great adventure pitting the forces of good versus evil only the way Heinlein could do.

The word says, And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. Revelation 14: 9, 10. Many Christian denominations believe the prophecy points to the papacy as the beast. However, in scripture, the Papal system has never been a beast, is not a beast and will never be a beast. To call that system the beast is to take the word of God on a very long stretch. This horn functions both politically and as a Christian Church. It persecuted and killed any Christian who disagrees with its dogmas. The word says the Saints shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time and he would come to his end unto the end. Nowhere in scripture is it indicated that this horn power will regain its dominion to persecute the saints of God as it did for over twelve hundred years. Then who is the beast? In many ways, the book is a thought-provoking exploration of the nature of good and evil in a man. The novel has its share of steamy moments. Some scenes between Cameron and one of the brothers will certainly get readers' pulses pounding. But, despite an opening rape scene--which is tastefully executed, there is nothing in this book to offend the typical adult or young adult reader. Reminiscent of the early novels of Stephen King, such as Salem's Lot, Hour of the Beast is a masterpiece of modern horror. Beyond the fright factor, the book's characters are three-dimensional and fascinating--you actually care about them. This book will appeal to hardcore horror fans and to people who prefer their chillers with a dose of intellect. The folks who like the works of Charlaine Harris (author of the Sookie Stackhouse books that are the basis of the HBO series "True Blood") will love this scary, smart, sexy novel.
