Book Synopsis John Clements Wickham: Charles Darwin's Glorious Fellow by : Barrie Jamieson
Download or read book John Clements Wickham: Charles Darwin's Glorious Fellow written by Barrie Jamieson and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-11 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Clements Wickham RN, played an essential navigational role in three voyages of HMS Beagle, the ship on which Charles Darwin, in the second voyage, was naturalist. On the third voyage Wickham was the Commander, from 1837 until he left, ostensibly owing to ill health, in 1841. From 1842 to 1858, he played a prominent role in Brisbane affairs, as Police Magistrate and, later, Government Resident, living at Newstead House. In 1842 he married Anna, daughter of Hannibal Macarthur, who died in 1852, and he married Ellen Deering in 1857 both of whom bore children. Darwin described Wickham as a glorious fine fellow. But despite such praise, and Wickham's great contributions to the founding of Australia, as a navigator, charting and naming its coastline, and as an administrator, no biography of him has appeared apart from some valuable essays and chapters and an excellent booklet by Brian Stewart. The present work attempts to track Wickham's activities throughout his life, until his death at Biarritz in 1864. The text has been kept close to that of the chroniclers of the voyages, Phillip Parker King, Robert Fitz-Roy, Charles Darwin and John Lort Stokes, his companions on board.

Download or read book Familia written by Robert R. Alvarez and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropologists, historians, and sociologists will find here a striking challenge to accepted explanations of the northward movement of migrants from Mexico into the United States. Alvarez investigates the life histories of pioneer migrants and their offspring, finding a human dimension to migration which centers on the family. Spanish, American, and English exploits paved the way for exchange between Baja and Alta California. Alvarez shows how cultural stability actually increased as migrants settled in new locations, bringing their common values and memories with them.

Book Synopsis The Indianology of California by : Alexander Smith Taylor
Download or read book The Indianology of California written by Alexander Smith Taylor and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2015-03-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indianology of California is a compiled reprint from a series of 151 newsprint articles originally published by Alexander Taylor (1817-1876) in the California Farmer Journal of Useful Sciences between 1860 and 1863. Much of Taylor's writing was original work that he transcribed from his personal research, his large collection of Franciscan documents, and from interviews with Native Americans. In this book, Taylor conveys facts about California Native American ethnography as accurately as his experience permitted and many details of his research have never been reprinted. The Indianology of California reports on the history, languages and customs of many native people of California. Taylor also includes some vocabulary and linguistic material about various California tribes. This book reprints Taylor's extensive collection of diverse notes about Native Americans throughout the state, and includes his reprinting of Boscana's Chinigchinich and Reid's The Indians of Los Angeles County. This book is interesting to a casual reader and useful to professional anthropologist and archaeologist.
Book Synopsis Micro-Spatial Histories of Global Labour by : Christian G. De Vito
Download or read book Micro-Spatial Histories of Global Labour written by Christian G. De Vito and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume suggests a new way of doing global history. Instead of offering a sweeping and generalizing overview of the past, we propose a ‘micro-spatial’ approach, combining micro-history with the concept of space. A focus on primary sources and awareness of the historical discontinuities and unevennesses characterizes the global history that emerges here. We use labour as our lens in this volume. The resulting micro-spatial history of labour addresses the management and recruitment of labour, its voluntary and coerced spatial mobility, its political perception and representation and the workers’ own agency and social networks. The individual chapters are written by contributors whose expertise covers the late medieval Eastern Mediterranean to present-day Sierra Leone, through early modern China and Italy, eighteenth-century Cuba and the Malvinas/Falklands, the journeys of a missionary between India and Brazil and those of Christian captives across the Ottoman empire and Spain. The result is a highly readable volume that addresses key theoretical and methodological questions in historiography. Chapter 7 is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license via link.springer.com.
