This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a presentation to the Linnean Society of London in November 1831, the Scottish botanist Robert Brown (perhaps better known for his discovery of Brownian motion) mentioned almost as an afterthought that in orchid epidermal cells, a single “circular areola” could be seen, a “nucleus of the cell as perhaps it might be termed.” Thus, the term “nucleus” (from Latin nucleus or nuculeus, “little nut” or kernel) was born for the compartment of the eukaryotic cell that contains the maj- ity of genetic information. One hundred and seventy-seven years later, we know that the nucleus is the site where genetic information is stored in the form of DNA, and where it is protected from damage, duplicated, divided, recombined, repaired, and “expressed.” For the latter, the genetic information is faithfully transcribed from DNA to RNA, then released from the nucleus into the surrounding cytoplasm. Most likely translated into polypeptide chains, the information re-enters the nucleus in the form of diverse proteins that function in the processes listed above.

Book Synopsis Annual Plant Reviews, Plant Epigenetics by : Peter Meyer
Download or read book Annual Plant Reviews, Plant Epigenetics written by Peter Meyer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the discovery of RNAi pathways and the histone code, epigenetics has become a popular and fast evolving research topic. Plant science has made a number of elementary contributions to this field, and the common elements of epigenetic systems have linked research groups interested in plant, fungal and animal systems. This volume provides a comprehensive overview epigenetic mechanisms and biological processes in plants, illustrating the wider relevance of this research to work in other plant science areas and on non-plant systems. It discusses recent advances in our knowledge of basic mechanisms and molecular components that control transcriptional and post-transcriptional silencing, an understanding of which is essential for plant researchers who use transgenic lines for stable expression of a recombinant construct or for targeted inactivation of an endogenous gene. These aspects should be of special interest to the agricultural industry. The volume illustrates the relevance of epigenetic control systems to gene regulation and plant development, examining paramutation, genomic imprinting and microRNA-based gene regulation mechanisms. Finally, it demonstrates the significance of epigenetic systems to viral defence and genome organisation. The volume is directed at researchers and professionals in plant molecular genetics, plant biochemistry and plant developmental biology.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Plant Science, 2 Volume Set by : Keith Roberts
Download or read book Handbook of Plant Science, 2 Volume Set written by Keith Roberts and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-12-10 with total page 1697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Science, like the biological sciences in general, has undergone seismic shifts in the last thirty or so years. Of course science is always changing and metamorphosing, but these shifts have meant that modern plant science has moved away from its previous more agricultural and botanical context, to become a core biological discipline in its own right. However the sheer amount of information that is accumulating about plant science, and the difficulty of grasping it all, understanding it and evaluating it intelligently, has never been harder for the new generation of plant scientists or, for that matter, established scientists. And that is precisely why this Handbook of Plant Science has been put together. Discover modern, molecular plant sciences as they link traditional disciplines! Derived from the acclaimed Encyclopedia of Life Sciences! Thorough reference of up-to-the minute, reliable, self-contained, peer-reviewed articles – cross-referenced throughout! Contains 255 articles and 48 full-colour pages, written by top scientists in each field! The Handbook of Plant Science is an authoritative source of up-to-date, practical information for all teachers, students and researchers working in the field of plant science, botany, plant biotechnology, agriculture and horticulture.
Book Synopsis Plant Molecular Biology by : Donald. Grierson
Download or read book Plant Molecular Biology written by Donald. Grierson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the preface to the first edition ofthis book, we expressed a conviction that there was a need for a short book that highlighted important advances in the new discipline of plant molecular biology. The rapid development of this topic has been brought about by the recognition of the unique properties of plants in the study of growth and development together with the application of recombinant DNA techniques to tackle these problems. Plant cells contain DNA in nuclei, plastids and mitochondria, and so offer the unique challenge of studying the interaction of three separate genetic systems in a single organism. The molecular approach has provided, in recent years, a wealth of important information about how plants function, and how they interact with bacteria, fungi and viruses. Furthermore, plant development involves the regulation of gene expression in response to intern al and external signals, and plant molecular biology has provided a fundamental insight into how this development is regulated. This is not only of considerable scientific interest, but also has important implications for the production of plants and plant products in agriculture, horticulture and the food industries.

Book Synopsis The Plant Cell Cycle and Its Interfaces by : Dennis Francis
Download or read book The Plant Cell Cycle and Its Interfaces written by Dennis Francis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Plant Cell Cycle and Its Interfaces is a timely review of what is known and what we need to know about important plant cell cycle interfaces. Only through proper understanding can we underpin the manipulation of crop plants and, in turn, provide the vital resources for an ever-increasing human population. Written by contributors from leading laboratories around the world, the book addresses fundamental questions about plant growth and development such as how plant growth regulators regulate the cell cycle, how nutrients drive the cell cycle, and how homeotic genes interface with the cell cycle at these key transition points.
