Download or read book Rod Laver written by Rod Laver and published by Triumph Books. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rod Laver's memoir is the inspiring story of how a diminutive, left-handed, red-headed country boy from Rockhampton, Australia became one of sports' greatest champions. Rod was a dominant force in world tennis for almost two decades, playing and defeating some of the greatest players of the twentieth century. In 1962, Rod became the second man to win the Grand Slam - that is, winning the Australian, French, Wimbledon and US titles in a single calendar year. In 1969, he won it again, becoming the only player ever to win the Grand Slam twice. Laver's book is a wonderfully nostalgic journey into Laver's path to stardom, from the early days of growing up in a Queensland country town in the 1950s, to breaking into the amateur circuit, to the extraordinary highs of Grand Slam victories. Away from on-court triumphs, Rod also movingly writes about the life-changing stroke he suffered in 1998, and of his beloved wife of more than 40 years, Mary, who died in 2012 after a long illness. Filled with anecdotes about the great players and great matches, set against the backdrop of a tennis world changing from rigid amateurism to the professional game we recognize today, Rod's book is a warm, insightful and fascinating account of one of tennis's all-time greats.

Download or read book The Kid from Norfolk Island written by John S Croucher and published by Woodslane Press. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This warm and lively biography provides insight not just into the life of Alf Pollard, but also into Australian life from the 1920s right through to the 1990s. Born almost 100 years ago in Melbourne, Alf Pollard spent most of his childhood on Norfolk Island where his family leased a banana plantation. Despite having virtually no education in his early years, Pollard’s tenacity and natural intelligence saw him top the state in the NSW Leaving Certificate and graduate from university with honours. He later gained a Masters degree and a PhD, and at age 23 became one of the youngest people ever to qualify as an actuary. A brilliant businessman, Pollard became Deputy General Manager of the MLC in 1954, aged just 37, but was later controversially embroiled in the scandalous H.G. Palmer affair that led to his forced resignation from the MLC in January 1966. He was later appointed as the Foundation Professor in Economic Statistics at Macquarie University, where he founded the first university actuarial program in the world. Pollard received many awards during his lifetime, including an Order of Australia, NSW Father of the Year and a prestigious Doctor of Science degree. He served on the boards of many companies, and helped save both the Sydney Eisteddfod and the Wesley Mission from bankruptcy.

Book Synopsis Man With A Racket by : Pancho Gonzalez
Download or read book Man With A Racket written by Pancho Gonzalez and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-02 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a champion? Ambition, determination, ability and a generous portion of some personal, often indefinable, quality that enables the individual to become outstanding in his field. Richard (Pancho) Gonzales has all the attributes of a champion, but it is his own special mixture of drive, single-minded concentration and sheer boyish delight in his sport which makes him victorious on the court just about every time. As a public figure, Pancho Gonzales has fascinated both sportsmen and the general public since his first appearance on the court. The myths that surround him are legion, and yet these legends have grown and developed in spite of Pancho, for there are few contemporary athletes who shun publicity as actively as he does. In Man With A Racket Pancho Gonzales reveals the facts behind the legends and the result is a story remarkable for its candor and honesty. The tale Pancho has to tell is a very human one. It is one of a great athlete fiercely dedicated to his sport, who treads the road to success in his own way and at his own breakneck pace. Always the incorrigible iconoclast, Gonzales has had only one supreme ambition——to play tennis, and to play it better than anyone else...
