Download or read book Burt Munro written by Neill Birss and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previously unpublished interviews with Burt Munro, legendary Kiwi motorcycle rider made famous in the movie The World's Fastest Indian. Colourful tales of a life well-lived. Invercargill, at the far southern end of New Zealand. It's the late 1960s and two blokes sit in a modest shed drinking tea. The old bloke is telling stories about his life; the young bloke, a junior reporter, is typing earnestly on his Olympia portable typewriter. Dramatic tales abound – of youthful scrapes, motorcycle races and ingenious repairs, of international travel and friendships and road trips, of high speeds and accidents and meetings with dutiful policemen. Burt Munro became known around the world through the 2005 movie The World's Fastest Indian, but had long been known to motorcycle fans as a colourful character and speed record-holder. Our young journalist, Neill Birss, moved away from Invercargill and the interviews he had typed out were never published. In fact, they were lost during the move and only resurfaced under strange circumstances many decades later. Here they are in this book – the lost interviews with Burt Munro, legendary Kiwi motorcycle rider – his voice as fresh and his stories as vivid as the day he told them to the young reporter.
Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Book excerpt: The Kiwi retro caravan craze is in full bloom - clear from the ever-increasing number of vans parked up at idyllic holiday spots, vans spotted at car events around the country, the magazines and online chatter on the subject, and a general yearning among the population for the sort of carefree holidaying that caravanning offers. Don Jessen profiles some of the country's prettiest and most interesting vans, and gives a bit of history on what is an enduring and endearing hobby for many.

Book Synopsis Draft Civil Contingencies Bill by : Defence Committee
Download or read book Draft Civil Contingencies Bill written by Defence Committee and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report welcomes the publication of the draft Bill (Cm. 5843, ISBN 0101584326) in June 2003, but states that civil contingencies legislation should have been introduced in the current Parliament (as recommended by an earlier Committee report (HCP 518, session 2001-02; ISBN 021500468X). Findings include the need for: the Government to explain why it proposes to create statutory civil protection obligations for local authorities and emergency services but not for itself or regional bodies; clarification of the emergency powers provisions to clearly establish safeguards against misuse of these powers; and further discussion on the provision preventing any special legislative measures being struck down by a court due to incompatibility with the Human Rights Act. The Committee also notes that, although it would not wish the Bill to be delayed any further, insufficient time has been allowed for the public consultation on the draft Bill, and the pre-legislative scrutiny process, to be conducted by a specially appointed Joint Committee, is also having to work to a very tight deadline.
