None of these mineralizations within Norwegian jurisdiction have been thoroughly investigated yet, but they are likely to contain significant amounts of minerals and metals crucial to society and the 'Green Shift'. Should these mineralizations, which contain minerals and metals that you and I use every day, be developed and mined? The question is premature: we need to know more before we can answer it. We need to know more about the formation, location and characteristics of these potential deposits, as well as the environmental, social and financial consequences of potential extraction. We need to evaluate mining alternatives and how to process the extracted ore. How should we answer this question? The ultimate decisions will be determined politically, and knowledge will be the defining factor. Knowledge gained from proper mineral resource management. Quantifying the Unknown sets out to estimate the amount of minerals and metals on the deep ocean floor along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, in particular, copper, zinc, gold and silver contained in so-called 'seafloor massive sulphide deposits'. These deposits are modern analogues of those mined worldwide on land today. The method used to quantify the amounts of these resources is known as 'play analysis'. It shares aspects of methodologies used on land for similar purposes and has been employed extensively to assess untapped petroleum resources on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Play analysis enables a quantification of the potential as well as associated uncertainty. The potential is large, but the uncertainty is also significant. This great revolution in geology - now usually subsumed under the concept of Plate Tectonics - brought the realization that convection within the Earth is responsible for the origin of today's ocean basins and conti nents, and that the grand features of the Earth's surface are the product of ongoing large-scale horizontal motions. Some of these notions were put forward earlier in this century (by A. Wegener, in 1912, and by A. Holmes, in 1929), but most of the new ideas were an outgrowth of the study of the ocean floor after World War II. In its impact on the earth sciences, the plate tectonics revolution is comparable to the upheaval wrought by the ideas of Charles Darwin (1809-1882), which started the intense discussion on the evolution of the biosphere that has recently heated up again. Darwin drew his inspiration from observations on island life made during the voyage of the Beagle (1831-1836), and his work gave strong impetus to the first global oceanographic expedition, the voyage of HMS Challenger (1872- 1876). Ever since, oceanographic research has been intimately associ ated with fundamental advances in the knowledge of Earth. This should come as no surprise. After all, our planet's surface is mostly ocean.

Excerpt: ... evidently the same formation as the Norwegian and the British continental shelves, and lies at very similar depths, both of which facts might seem difficult to explain if the land has been recently submerged as much as 60 or 80 m. It might however, be possible, that during the glacial periods the sea-level stood rather lower on the Faeroes than in Norway. It is for instance probable, that the volume of the ocean was reduced by the formation of the great ice-sheets; how much the sea-level sank in this manner cannot be computed; but it may have been appreciable if we assume that the European, American, Siberian, and perhaps also the Antarctic ice ages were simultaneous. The fall of sea-level was in Norway apparently much checked by the isostatic movements of the land due to the pressure of the great ice-caps. On the Faeroes these isostatic movements may not have been very great, as the ice-cap cannot have been very thick; thus the total result may have been that the fall of sea-level caused a considerable lowering of the shoreline on its coasts. There is still another possibility: if we assume that the Scandinavian British platform has actually been depressed by the weight of the inland ice during its greatest extension, we must also assume that at the same time there has been an isostatic movement of the bottom of the Norwegian sea in the opposite direction, and thus may the ridge on which the Faeroes are situated have been actually raised. The absence of a typical broad coast platform on the tvheather-beaten Orkneys and the Shetland Islands is also interesting. Until fairly recently, most of the detailed studies using modern swath bathymetry systems and side-scan sonars had been conducted at spreading centers with relatively high spreading rates. The present project on Aegir Ridge, together with related programs on the Knipovich Ridge (Drs. Kathleen Crane, Peter Vogt & Alexander Shor), addresses the detailed morphologic and structural expressions of the extremely slow-spreading ridge systems of the Norwegian Sea. The objective is to improve our understanding of the morphology of these systems, and of the processes responsible for the generation and modification of sea floor in slow-spreading environments.
