Book excerpt: This is John Burroughs' 1887 work, "Fresh Fields". It presents an authentic sketch of English nature and countryside in an accessible and charming way only Burroughs could achieve. This volume is highly recommended for lovers of nature writing, and it would make for a worthy addition to any collection. Contents include: "Nature In England", "English Woods: A Contrast", "In Carlyle's Country", "A Hunt For The Nightingale", "English And American Song-birds", "Impressions Of Some English Birds", "In Wordsworth's Country", "A Glance At British Wild Flowers", "British Fertility", etc. John Burroughs (1837 - 1921) was an American naturalist, essayist, and active member of the U.S. conservation movement. Burroughs' work was incredibly popular during his lifetime, and his legacy has lived on in the form of twelve U.S. Schools named after him, Burroughs Mountain, and the John Burroughs Association-which publicly recognizes well-written and illustrated natural history publications. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book captures the rise of New York's passionately musical Irish Catholics and provides a compelling history of early New York City. The Unstoppable Irish follows the changing fortunes of New York's Irish Catholics, commencing with the evacuation of British military forces in late 1783 and concluding one hundred years later with the completion of the initial term of the city's first Catholic mayor. During that century, Hibernians first coalesced and then rose in uneven progression from being a variously dismissed, despised, and feared foreign group to ultimately receiving de facto acceptance as constituent members of the city's population. Dan Milner presents evidence that the Catholic Irish of New York gradually integrated (came into common and equal membership) into the city populace rather than assimilated (adopted the culture of a larger host group). Assimilation had always been an option for Catholics, even in Ireland. In order to fit in, they needed only to adopt mainstream Anglo-Protestant identity. But the same virile strain within the Hibernian psyche that had overwhelmingly rejected the abandonment of Gaelic Catholic being in Ireland continued to hold forth in Manhattan and the community remained largely intact. A novel aspect of Milner's treatment is his use of song texts in combination with period news reports and existing scholarship to develop a fuller picture of the Catholic Irish struggle. Products of a highly verbal and passionately musical people, Irish folk and popular songs provide special insight into the popularly held attitudes and beliefs of the integration epoch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1974, The Industrial Muse is a study of the literary achievements of the working class. The focus is upon the cultural environment and assumptions of self-educated writers, their literary preoccupations and careers, and the content, form and structure of their writings. This literature must first be considered from the perspective of the working people who read and wrote it, for it functioned in their lives in a number of important ways. Its character was due in large part to the conscious efforts of educated workers who wish to gain cultural recognition along with social and economic justice. It helped to shape individual and class consciousness by giving order to working men's lives and clarifying their relationship with those who held cultural and political power. This literature asserted the autonomy of the working class, but did not posit a new worldview, lest the gains of class solidarity be lost irretrievably. This is an interesting read for scholars and researchers of working-class literature, english literature and working-class history.

Book excerpt: This definitive field guide is the only guide to use a fully integrated photographic approach to profile the extraordinary range of birds found in eastern North America. The highest-quality photography brings nearly 500 species to life on the page, capturing their beauty and making identification quick and effortless. The 393 species most commonly seen east of the 100th Meridian (in the United States, the region east of the Rocky Mountains) are featured in full-page profiles that emphasize all the information needed to identify them. Diagnostic photographs are silhouetted and clearly annotated, and any plumages, whether female, juvenile, subspecies, and winter or summer, that differ noticeably from the primary image are also included and labeled accordingly. Detailed similar species boxes show the plumage that is most similar-in some cases the female or juvenile rather than the featured adult-and the most significant differences are picked out. Stunning context photographs show the bird at home, in its normal habitat or performing behavior that is typical of that species. Schematic artworks show the shape and posture of the bird in flight as well as its coloration, and a diagram of its flight pattern is also included. The border of Texas and Mexico is a popular destination because of the many species that can be seen nowhere else in eastern North America. The 60 most common of these southern gems are profiled in their own section of quarter-page entries, each with a stunning photograph annotated to point out the most significant field marks. A separate section profiles 44 species that are particularly uncommon or local in their distribution.
