Book Synopsis The Light Railways of Britain & Ireland by : Anthony Burton
Download or read book The Light Railways of Britain & Ireland written by Anthony Burton and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985 by Moorland Press, The Light Railways of Britain & Ireland has remained unavailable for more than twenty-five years, until now. Re-released by Pen & Sword, this is a thorough and engaging book that covers, in depth, the fascinating story of Britain's last railway development, the Rural light railways, constructed as a result of the Light Railways Act 1896.Rigorously detailed, it charts the overall history of the last great railway boom in Britain the light railway boom from 1896, to the beginning of the Great War in 1914. During this period a large number of narrow and standard gauge lines were constructed in both Britain and Ireland, in order to serve and open up areas in both countries that, at the time, lacked adequate transport links. This book tells the story of how these lines were constructed and why, in most cases, they eventually failed, due to post-First World War road competition.Authored by two highly acclaimed writers of transport history, this is a true testament to, and a timely reminder of, Britain's last railway development.
Book Synopsis British Railway Tickets by : Jan Dobrzynski
Download or read book British Railway Tickets written by Jan Dobrzynski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-20 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1838 Thomas Edmondson, an employee of the fledgling Newcastle & Carlisle Railway, revolutionised the ticket issuing process in Britain and left an enduring legacy: the Edmondson ticket. Purchased as proof of the contract between passenger and railway company, the ticket was a receipt, travel pass and an ephemeral record of almost every train journey ever taken in the British Isles, reflecting the nostalgia of the railways and a period of history when the movement of millions of people brought together England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The railways printed millions of tickets for every conceivable journey and category of passenger. Most were destroyed after use, but remarkably many survive, in the care of libraries, museums and collectors, and form the basis of a fascinating hobby.
Book Synopsis British Transport Police by : Malcolm Clegg
Download or read book British Transport Police written by Malcolm Clegg and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of the British Transport Police, the National Police Force responsible for policing the railways of England, Scotland and Wales. The roots of the Force go back almost 200 years, starting with the development of the railways during the Nineteenth Century. Hundreds of railway companies were founded and although mergers and amalgamations took place, by the end of the century, well over 100 railway companies were operating, most of which employed railway policemen. The first railway policemen were recruited to work on the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1826. Other railway companies quickly followed and by the 1850s, railway policemen with their smart uniforms and top hats were a common sight on Britain’s railways. During the Twentieth Century, railway companies continued to merge before being nationalized in 1948. The following year, the British Transport Commission (BTC) was created to oversee not only the newly nationalized railway network, but also the nation’s docks, shipping, inland waterways, road transport, road haulage and other companies. Also in 1949, the British Transport Commission Police (BTC Police) was created to take over the policing of these newly nationalized institutions. All the former railway, dock and canal police forces were then absorbed into the new BTC Police Force. The BTC was abolished in 1962, having incurred serious financial losses. The BTC Police was renamed the British Transport Police in 1963 and has continued to operate ever since. It no longer polices the docks, harbors and canals for reasons outlined in this book.

Book Synopsis 1968: Those Were the Days by : Brian Williams
Download or read book 1968: Those Were the Days written by Brian Williams and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1968 was the year when humans first glimpsed the far side of the Moon, but also the year the world was shocked by assassination, by the crushing of hope for reform and by wars that showed no sign of ever ending. To the old there seemed too much change, too quickly, with youth in revolt, though against what no one was entirely sure ... 'Hey Jude', sang the Beatles, with a refrain that lingered long into the summer night, 'Don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it better'...
Download or read book The LMS Handbook written by David Wragg and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-07-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The London Midland & Scottish Railway was the largest of the Big Four railway companies to emerge from the 1923 grouping. It was the only one to operate in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as having two short stretches of line in the Irish Republic. It was also the world's largest railway shipping operator and owned the greatest number of railway hotels. Mainly a freight railway, it still boasted the best carriages, and the work of chief engineer Sir William Stanier influenced the first locomotive and carriage designs for the nationalised British railways. Packed with facts and figures as well as historical narrative, this extensively illustrated book is a superb reference source that will be of interest to all railway enthusiasts.
