Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. An important analysis of the links between the Indian Diaspora and the state and how this Diaspora can influence economic and foreign policy making in their country of origin. M.C. Lall focuses on India, presenting an unusual case whereby the Indian government in post- independence years ostracized its Diaspora despite the need for outside help with India’s economic development. This in-depth study of the failure of the Indian government to make good use of its Diaspora looks at the reasons why India did not cultivate a relationship after independence; why there was still no change even in light of its economic liberalization and what have been the consequences of this missing relationship.

Book Synopsis The Postcolonial Indian Novel in English by : Geetha Ganapathy-Doré
Download or read book The Postcolonial Indian Novel in English written by Geetha Ganapathy-Doré and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian writers of English such as G. V. Desani, Salman Rushdie, Amit Chaudhuri, Amitav Ghosh, Vikram Seth, Allan Sealy, Shashi Tharoor, Arundhati Roy, Vikram Chandra and Jhumpa Lahiri have taken the potentialities of the novel form to new heights. Against the background of the genre’s macro-history, this study attempts to explain the stunning vitality, colourful diversity, and the outstanding but sometimes controversial success of postcolonial Indian novels in the light of ongoing debates in postcolonial studies. It analyses the warp and woof of the novelistic text through a cross-sectional scrutiny of the issues of democracy, the poetics of space, the times of empire, nation and globalization, self-writing in the auto/meta/docu-fictional modes, the musical, pictorial, cinematic and culinary intertextualities that run through this hyperpalimpsestic practice and the politics of gender, caste and language that gives it an inimitable stamp. This concise and readable survey gives us intimations of a truly world literature as imagined by Francophone writers because the postcolonial Indian novel is a concrete illustration of how “language liberated from its exclusive pact with the nation can enter into a dialogue with a vast polyphonic ensemble.”

Download or read book Projections of Paradise written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paradise is commonly imagined as a place of departure or arrival, beginning and closure, permanent inhabitation of which, however much desired, is illusory. This makes it the dream of the traveller, the explorer, the migrant – hence, a trope recurrent in postcolonial writing, which is so centrally concerned with questions of displacement and belonging. Projections of Paradise documents this concern and demonstrates the indebtedness of writers as diverse as Salman Rushdie, Agha Shahid Ali, Cyril Dabydeen, Bernardine Evaristo, Amitav Ghosh, James Goonewardene, Romesh Gunesekera, Abdulrazak Gurnah, Janette Turner Hospital, Penelope Lively, Fatima Mernissi, Michael Ondaatje, Shyam Selvadurai, M.G. Vassanji, and Rudy Wiebe to strikingly similar myths of fulfilment. In writing, directly or indirectly, about the experience of migration, all project paradises as places of origin or destination, as homes left or not yet found, as objects of nostalgic recollection or hopeful anticipation. Yet in locating such places, quite specifically, in Egypt, Zanzibar, Kashmir, Sri Lanka, the Sundarbans, Canada, the Caribbean, Queensland, Morocco, Tuscany, Russia, the Arctic, the USA, and England, they also subvert received fantasies of paradise as a pleasurable land rich with natural beauty. Projections of Paradise explores what happens to these fantasies and what remains of them as postcolonial writings call them into question and expose the often hellish realities from which popular dreams of ideal elsewheres are commonly meant to provide an escape. Book Synopsis Landscapes of Accumulation by : Llerena Guiu Searle
Download or read book Landscapes of Accumulation written by Llerena Guiu Searle and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India s cities have dramatically changed since the country s liberalization in the 1990s. Alongside open-air markets and crumbling apartment blocks, spacious air-conditioned malls now sell Louis Vuitton luggage and Swarovski crystal, new gated communities offer residents pools and indoor gyms, and towering office buildings house international firms. Landscapes of Accumulation is about this violent, sudden, and spectacular urban transformation. Anthropologist Llerena Searle gives an ethnographic account of how land is becoming an international financial resource rather than a site for agricultural or industrial production. Investors, consultants, and government officials are creating a system of clear land titles, well developed and securitized mortgage markets, and practices for financing, constructing, leasing, and maintaining buildings. But Searle shows that there is also considerable semiotic work involved. Drawing on fieldwork with investors, developers, real estate agents and others, she documents how stories about growththe growth of consumer demand, the Indian workforce, the Indian Gross Domestic Product, incomes, foreign investments, and real estate itselfbecome self-fulfilling prophecies. These imaginative statements, rather than specific state and city mandates, are shaping India s built environment, which has become increasingly difficult to navigate for all but a tiny urban elite. This book will be essential reading for anyone interested in the consequences of turning land into an international financial engine and, more broadly, the material ramifications of late capitalism s global reach."
Book Synopsis Freedom Inc.: Gendered Capitalism in New Indian Literature and Culture by : Mukti Lakhi Mangharam
Download or read book Freedom Inc.: Gendered Capitalism in New Indian Literature and Culture written by Mukti Lakhi Mangharam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While globalization is often credited with the eradication of 'traditional' constraints tied to gender and caste, in reality the opening up of the Indian economy in the 1990s has led to a decline in freedom for many female, Dalit, and lower class Indians. This book explores the contraction of what it means to be free in post-liberalization India, examining how global capitalism has exacerbated existing inequalities based on traditional femininities and masculinities, while also creating new hierarchies. Freedom Inc. argues that post-1990s literature and culture frequently represents and reinforces the equation of free-market capitalism with individual freedom within the new 'idea of India.' However, many texts often also challenge this logic by pointing to more expansive horizons of autonomy for the gendered self. Through readings of texts as diverse as Dalit women's life-writing, pop fiction, realist novels, self-help, regional film, and Netflix TV shows, Mangharam investigates how notions like 'free trade,' 'entrepreneurship,' and 'self-help' are experienced, embodied, and challenged by disadvantaged peoples, and by women differently than men. In the process, Freedom Inc. explores how different literary forms illuminate alternative and buried pathways to fuller freedoms.
