Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Noatak-Kobuk Region, Alaska Investigations by the United States Geological Survey have closely followed the pioneer' a search for deposits of valuable minerals in Alaska. In accordance with this practice, expeditions have visited parts of northwestern Alaska where mining has been in progress or where there was probability of mining in the future, and a series of reports has been published setting forth both the geologic and the geographic results obtained. The present paper is one of this series and aims to describe the main features of the N oatak-kobuk region. The area included in this indefinite tract is shown on Plate I. It is not proposed, however, to describe all the region mapped, but rather to give attention only to the Kobuk and N o atak basins and the immediately contiguous territory. Therefore the Koyukuk and its tributaries, except Alatna River, will in the main be excluded, together with the Selawik River basin and Seward Peninsula. Though reference is made to these places, they are not part of the area considered in this bulletin. Reports on certain of these other areas have already been published and are available.' Book excerpt: This classic is an original work of literature by one of America's foremost conservationists and is an account of the people of the north, both Native and white, who give Alaska its special human flavor. First published over fifty years ago, the book is still a favorite among old-time Alaskans and, over the years, has prompted numerous readers to pack up and move to Alaska. The richness of statistical coverage in this book, and Marshall's careful descriptions of the characters he met, provide readers with a window to the world of 1930, and a nearly complete record of the Koyukuk civilization as he saw it. Readers learn about what the people of Wiseman thought about sex, religion, politics, and the myriad of ways they found to cope with and enjoy life in a wilderness community.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska and the Klondike When the special subcommittee of the Senate Com mittee on Territories visited Alaska in the summer of 1903 for the purpose of gathering information which would enable them to legislate wisely and helpfully with regard to that great district, I was fortunate enough to obtain permission to accompany the senatorial party in an unofficial capacity. The trip occupied, approximately, ten weeks, and carried us not only through the interior, along the whole course of the Yukon River, but to many places on the coast and among the islands not readily accessible by the regular means of travel. As will be readily under stood, enjoyed peculiarly favourable opportunities to study the resources and the possibilities of the country, and the following pages on Alaska, in their original form, were written for my paper after my return home, and published in it exclusively. There appears to be a demand for reliable and up-to-date information about that coun try - that, and the urgent request of men who have read what I have written, and who know Alaska, that it be given permanent and convenient form, are the excuses for this volume. For this purpose the original story of Alaska has been carefully revised and the statistical information brought down to include the commercial and industrial operations of the year 1904. I want the sweep of wide, triumphant wings; The halleluiah that the ocean sings; The wind that roars like beasts and never tires! Great God, my soul aches to the mighty lgres Of Nature To men heritaged as kings Who dare, aspire, achieve, not counting cost, So that a deed be done that reaches far A new land won; a perilous water crossed; So that a man coming to his last rest Shall wear upon his brow the splendid star That leads the glorious empire - builders West! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peerless Alaska Our Cache Near the Pole Twenty-three years ago, when Alaska, disregarded and undervalued, seemed to be lying in the shadow and chill of its sub-arctic seclusion, the author of Our New Alaska, in an attempt to vindicate the Seward Pur chase, wrote what follows. It was an appeal to Caesar. Subsequent development has borne out all that was then forecast, and transcendently more, as has been confirmed by official surveys, governors' reports, U. S. Experiment stations, and correspondents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 'every incident is actual history, and even the names are real. The dog story is also con scientiously true history, and belongs to one of the minor gold stampedes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Arctic Province: Alaska and the Seal Islands If the writer could materialize in the reader's mind that large aggregate of printed matter now stacked on book-shelves and filed in newspaper columns, which has been published to the world during the last eighty years upon Alaska, the effect would certainly be startling. Scores of weighty volumes, hundreds of pamphlets and magazine articles, and a thousand newspaper letters, have been devoted to the subject of Alaskan life, scenery, and value. In contemplation of this, viewed from the author's standpoint of extended personal experience, he announces his determination to divest himself of all individuality in the following chapters, to portray in word, and by brush and pencil, the life and country of Alaska as it is, so clearly and so truthfully, that the reader may draw his or her own inference, just as though he or she stood upon the ground itself. How differently a number of us are impressed in the viewing of any one subject, by which observation we utterly fail to agree as to its character and worth! This variance is handsomely illustrated by the diverse opinion of Alaskan travellers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
