Book excerpt: What is the No Survivors Rule? Who survives? And who dies? In the Hinterlands USA, where law and order is big business, even the sellers of aggression insurance won’t enter the Zone, a treacherous land that’s a haven for hired guns and corporate black-ops. But when freelancer Frankie Devlin’s friends are brutally murdered, that’s exactly where his quest for vengeance leads. But the Zone is also home to the old quarantine colonies, where a pharmaceutical giant’s greed now threatens the lives of the last survivors of a horrifying epidemic. As panic consumes the colonies, one woman emerges as a beacon of hope. A mysterious rogue chemist, determined to help the survivors at any cost. When the evidence leads Frankie to her doorstep, it seems she might hold the key to his friends’ murders, as well. But, as the crisis escalates, the chemist is confronted with an impossible choice, and Frankie must decide who he can trust. And who will survive. With adrenaline-fueled action and a mystery that spans generations, The No Survivors Rule will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
Book Synopsis The Law of Non-International Armed Conflict by : Sandesh Sivakumaran
Download or read book The Law of Non-International Armed Conflict written by Sandesh Sivakumaran and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Law of Non-International Armed Conflict brings together and critically analyses the disparate conventional, customary, and soft law relating to non-international armed conflict. All the relevant bodies of international law are considered, including international humanitarian law, international criminal law, and international human rights law. The book traces the changes to the legal framework applicable to non-international armed conflict from ad hoc regulation in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, to systematic regulation through the 1949 Geneva Conventions and 1977 Additional Protocols, to the transformation of the law in the mid-1990s. Armed conflicts ranging from the US civil war, the Algerian War of Independence, and the attempted secession of Biafra, through to the current conflicts in the Colombia, the Philippines, and Sudan are all considered. The identification and analysis of the law is complemented by a consideration of the practice, allowing both violations of, and respect for, the law, to be ascertained. Given that non-international armed conflicts are fought between states and non-state armed groups, or between armed groups, particular attention is paid to the oft-neglected views of armed groups. This is done through an analysis of hundreds of statements, unilateral declarations, internal regulations, and bilateral agreements issued by armed groups. Equivalent material emanating from states parties to conflicts is also considered. The book is thus an essential reference point for the law and practice of non-international armed conflicts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the traditional approach to international law by concentrating on international hThis book challenges the traditional approach to international law by concentrating on international humanitarian law and placing the focus beyond States: it reflects on current legal, policy and practical issues that concern non-State actors in and around situations of armed conflict. With the emergence of the nation-State, international law was almost entirely focused on inter-State relations, thus excluding - for the most part - non-State entities. In the modern era, such a focus needs to be adjusted, in order to encompass the various types of functions and interactions that those entities perform throughout numerous international decision-making processes. The contributions that comprise this volume are oriented towards a broad readership audience in the academic and professional fields related to international humanitarian law, international criminal law, international human rights law and general public international law. Kotlik, LLM, is Academic Coordinator at the Observatory of International Humanitarian Law of the University of Buenos Aires, School of Law and was a Judicial Fellow at the International Court of Justice between 2018-2019, and Manuel J. This branch of law aims to regulate the means and methods of warfare as well as to provide protections to those who do not, or who no longer, take part in the hostilities. It is one of the oldest branches of international law and one of enduring relevance today. The Oxford Guide to International Humanitarian Law provides a practical yet sophisticated overview of this important area of law. Written by a stellar line up of contributors, drawn from those who not only have extensive practical experience but who are also regarded as leading scholars of the subject, the text offers a comprehensive and authoritative exposition of the field. The Guide provides professionals and advanced students with information and analysis of sufficient depth to enable them to perform their tasks with understanding and confidence. Each chapter illuminates how the law applies in practice, but does not shy away from the important conceptual issues that underpin how the law has developed. It will serve as a first port of call and a regular reference work for those interested in international humanitarian law.

Download or read book AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL LAW CASES Fourth Series 2009 VOLUME 8 written by Oceana Editorial Board and published by . This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AILC is an annual case law reporter that provides the full text of U.S. court opinions involving international law issues. The courts covered include all U.S. federal district courts, federal appellate courts, and the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as some state courts, the U.S. Court of Claims, the U.S. Court of International Trade, and the U.S. Tax Court. The series seeks to provide not every single case in which a court refers to international law but rather all cases that analyze at least one international law issue in depth. The list of subjects addressed by these volumes is vast and changes from year to year, with the inclusion and prominence of most topics turning on their prevalence in a given year's jurisprudence. Some consistently prominent topics are personal jurisdiction over foreign defendants, deportation procedure, and double taxation. Over the last three editions (2006, 2007, and 2008), many topics have developed rapidly and constitute a correspondingly larger portion of the volumes, particularly Terrorism, the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, Forum Non Conveniens, and an entirely new, added topic: the National Security Exception (to deportation eligibility). The 2008 edition of AILC also features expanded sections on family law and on the detention of terrorist suspects. The U.S. war on terror and the crisis at Guantanamo have made that last topic a significant and dynamic component of AILC. Each edition of AILC also comes framed with two practical resources for students and scholars. The first is an introductory editor's note that both reviews international law's major developments for the given year and explains to readers how to use the volumes. The second is a subject index to allow for targeted research. Volume Eight of AILC involves issues involving aliens, such as deportation, extradition, aiding and transporting illegal aliens, and border entry. It also includes issues in international courts and issues surrounding war, belligerency, and neutrality. In Gherebi v. Obama, the petitioners, detainees at Guantanamo Bay, challenge the legality of their confinement by the government, seeking the issuance of writs of habeas corpus to secure their release from detention. The issue was whether the President has the authority to detain individuals as part of its ongoing military campaign against al-Quaeda and, if so, what is the scope of that authority. In Vinyls, Inc. v. United States, the issue was whether the Court of International Trade correctly concluded that the imported product, whose textile component is made entirely of man-made fibers, is a product with textile components in which man-made fibers predominate by weight over another single textile fiber. The court concluded that the Court of International Trade Correctly classified the subject goods.
