Book excerpt: Perfectly composed in a tailored skirt and jacket, Eleanor Porter walks confidently through the lobby of a gleaming skyscraper on London's Isle of Dogs. The newly appointed "night lawyer" for the tabloid Chronicle, Eleanor has been hired to protect her employer from lawsuits. It's a job she can do with her whole heart. After all, she knows what it's like to be vulnerable. Three years ago, after the violent death of her father and her abandonment by her married lover, Eleanor fell apart. But with determination and courage, and with the newfound discipline of karate, she made her way back to the land of the living: She shed pounds, reshaped her appearance, bought herself a modest home, and kept the memories at bay. Now, with the new job, she hopes to launch herself into happiness. But one by one, problems emerge: the wayward young neighbor through whose walls Eleanor hears things she does not want to hear; the unsettling reappearance of her former lover; the security expert who catches her on camera in an intimate moment and decides that he is going to keep watching. Even more disturbing, someone is stalking her, following her on the nighttime streets of London. Whoever it is has gone so far as to break into her house-even to sleep in her bed. Eleanor knows that she is in real trouble, but the danger is even worse than she can imagine. And this time, the damage may be beyond all repair. In this white-knuckle novel of psychological suspense, Michelle Spring demonstrates her mastery at capturing the clean, well-lit façade of modern life-and the chaotic terrors that lurk just beneath the surface.

Download or read book Bad Lawyer written by Anna Dorn and published by Legacy Lit. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law school was never Anna Dorn's dream. It was a profession pushed on her by her parents, teachers, society... whatever. It's not the worst thing that can happen to a person; as Dorn says, law school was pretty "cushy" and mostly entailed wearing leggings every day to her classes at Berkeley and playing beer pong with her friends at night. The hardest part was imagining what it would be like to actually be a lawyer one day. But then she'd think of Glenn Close on Damages and Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde, and hoped for the best. After graduation, however, Dorn realized that there was nothing sexy about being a lawyer. Between the unflattering suits, sucking up to old men, and spending her days sequestered in a soul-sucking cubicle, Dorn quickly learned that being a lawyer wasn't everything Hollywood made it out to be. Oh, and she sucked at it. Not because she wasn't smart enough, but because she couldn't get herself to care enough to play by the rules. Bad Lawyer is more than just a memoir of Dorn's experiences as a less-than-stellar lawyer; it's about the less-than-stellar legal reality that exists for all of us in this country, hidden just out of sight. It's about prosecutors lying and filing inane briefs that lack any semblance of logic or reason; it's about defense attorneys sworn to secrecy-until the drinks come out and the stories start flying; and it's about judges who drink in their chambers, sexually harass the younger clerks, and shop on eBay instead of listening to homicide testimony. More than anything, this book aims to counteract the fetishization of the law as a universe based entirely on logic and reason. Exposing everything from law school to law in the media, and drawing on Dorn's personal experiences as well as her journalistic research, Bad Lawyer ultimately provides us with a fresh perspective on our justice system and the people in it, and gives young lawyers advice going forward into the 21st century.
Download or read book Lawyer Boy written by Rick Lax and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2008-07-08 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After college, Rick Lax moved back into his parents' house. The closest thing he had to a job was eating his parents' food, sitting on his parents' couch, and watching The Price is Right. An amateur magician, he spent the rest of his time practicing card tricks and rope tricks. And though he could tie four different slipknots, the necktie posed some difficulties. Rick's father, a successful Michigan attorney, told Rick it was time to move out and enter the real world. Rick certainly wasn't going to get a job, so he went to law school instead. This is the story of Rick's journey from childhood to lawyerhood. In Lawyer Boy, Rick uses the skills he developed as a magician to succeed in class, and learns how to become a lawyer without becoming his father. His journey through law school was exhausting, exciting, and infuriating, and, the way he tells it, so funny it's criminal.

Book Synopsis The Philadelphia Lawyer by : Robert R. Bell
Download or read book The Philadelphia Lawyer written by Robert R. Bell and published by Susquehanna University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One focus of this book is to look at the interrelationship between the old Philadelphia upper class and the legal profession. The upper class refers to a group of old Philadelphia families whose members are descendants of financially successful individuals. Through their families, those men have had the means to enter, train in, and practice law. While over the two centuries covered here the percentage of upper class lawyers decreased, their influence for many years continued to surpass their numbers. In 1944, about 10 percent of all lawyers were listed in the Social Register. In the eight largest law firms in the city they accounted for 37 percent of the partners and 23 percent of the associates. But by 1990, their influence was waning: they represented only about two percent of all lawyers in the city. Moreover, in the eight largest law firms in the city, 12 percent of the partners were in the Social Register, but only one percent of the associates. Indeed, with the twenty-first century approaching, the old upper class was - and is - becoming increasingly irrelevant to Philadelphia law. In each chapter, an examination is made of the emerging American legal system and the training and practice of law in a given historical period. Before the Revolution most American law was British law. After the Revolution there were often bitter struggles over the continued use of British common law. Rapidly the British common law was modified, giving way to American common law - and that was the major focus of law up until the Civil War. Following the Civil War and well into the twentieth century the major thrust of law was related to business and industry, especially corporations. By the 1930s there was an increasing focus on Federal Commissions and statute law. Over the decades the training of lawyers underwent change. Until the twentieth century, most lawyers were trained in law offices, and it was only slowly that law schools became the accepted means of legal training. For most of American history, the lawyer practiced alone and often appeared as an advocate in court where his forensic skills were highly valued. For the various historical eras, this study attempts to show how the Philadelphia lawyer lived, some of his values, how he learned the law, and how he practiced it. Anecdotal material is used to illustrate these points whenever possible. Forty-two Philadelphia lawyers were interviewed who, for the most part, had first entered the bar in the 1920s and 1930s. Six modern-day Philadelphia lawyers were interviewed at length, and their insights are presented in the epilogue. Following each chapter there is a profile of a Philadelphia lawyer contemporary to the period discussed. Most of the profiles are of men who, considered outstanding lawyers in their own time, have come to be regarded as outstanding in the history of Philadelphia law.
