The cycle contains six songs based on poetry by female poets: "The Crickets sang," and "A Spider sewed at Night" by Emily Dickinson, "Some Things Are Dark" by Edna St. Vincent Millay, "Song," and "Sleep, mourner, sleep!" by Emily Bronte, and "Sonnet" by Elizabeth Bishop. Chapter one is an introduction containing information about the premiere of Night Dances and a biography of Hall. Chapter two discusses the history of the song cycle as a genre and introduces Night Dances, gives reception history for the cycle, offers insight into how Hall chose the poetry, and introduces the techniques and sounds Hall used to create a cohesive cycle. Chapters three through eight provide detailed analysis for each of the six songs. Chapter nine discusses how Hall fits into the new era of song cycle composition, and explores not only the challenges of a twentieth-century composer, but how Hall has discovered self-publishing as a viable alternative for distribution of her music.

Book excerpt: Juliana Hall is a prominent American composer with a diverse range of compositions. However, her greatest focus has been on composing art songs. Hall’s personal history is unique, having initially majored in piano at Yale University before pursuing composition. Her works are imbued with her individual color and philosophy, reflecting her artistic vision. From her first commission with Night Dances in 1987 to her recent works, such as Christina’s World in 2016, Hall has consistently adhered to her own color of compositional method and style, which is a testament to her artistic consistency and commitment to her craft. This study consists of three chapters. The first chapter examines Hall’s life, identifying the events and influences that guided her to establish her own method of composition. In addition, the second chapter describes her own composition techniques, which she has used since the beginning of her career as a composer and still adheres to in her sixties. Finally, the third chapter introduces her two song cycles and presents the poetic and musical connections used in each, providing an overall understanding of both. Specifically, each song in the cycle is analyzed in detail, identifying Hall’s specific songwriting techniques and intentions. I sincerely hope that the findings of this study will be helpful to musicians who appreciate Hall’s works.

But where did opera fit into this fashionable new entertainment world? Opera in the Jazz Age: Cultural Politics in 1920s Britain explores the interaction between opera and popular culture at a key historical moment when there was a growing imperative to categorize art forms as "highbrow," "middlebrow," or "lowbrow." Literary studies of the so-called "battle of the brows" have been numerous, but this is the first book to consider the place of opera in interwar debates about high and low culture. This study by Alexandra Wilson argues that opera was extremely difficult to pigeonhole: although some contemporary commentators believed it to be too highbrow, others thought it not highbrow enough. Opera in the Jazz Age paints a lively and engaging picture of 1920s operatic culture, and introduces a charismatic cast of early twentieth-century critics, conductors, and celebrity singers. Opera was performed during this period to socially mixed audiences in a variety of spaces beyond the conventional opera house: music halls, cinemas, cafés and schools. Performance and production standards were not always high - often quite the reverse - but opera-going was evidently great fun. Office boys whistled operatic tunes they had heard on the gramophone and there was a genuine sense that opera was for everyone. In this provocative and timely study, Wilson considers how the opera debate of the 1920s continues to shape the ways in which we discuss the art form, and draws connections between the battle of the brows and present-day discussions about elitism. The book makes a major contribution to our understanding of the cultural politics of twentieth-century Britain and is essential reading for anybody interested in the history of opera, the battle of the brows, or simply the perennially fascinating decade that was the 1920s.
