Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nibelungenlied and Gudrun in England and America For the matter of these introductory sections I am indebted to the recognised editions and to the works mentioned in the bibliographies and text; the chief sources for the rest of the work were, of course, the catalogues of the British Museum, the Cambridge University Library, the Bodleian Library, and the Taylor Institution, Oxford. The publishers catalogues, the Annual American Catalogue, indexes of periodicals, and the chief bibliographical works have also been searched, and some material has been found by examining large numbers of books with such promising titles as those mentioned in the Appendix. The references to the Nibelungen and Gudrun sagas in Anglo-Saxon and Middle English literature are, except where otherwise stated, mentioned, but not discussed, in G. Binz's Zeugnisse zur germanischen Sage in England (P.B.B., xx. 190 ff.), an article concerned mainly with the occurrence in England of names taken from the old sagas.
