Book excerpt: Nothing is considered more natural than the connection between Isaac Newton’s science and the modernity that came into being during the eighteenth-century Enlightenment. Terms like “Newtonianism” are routinely taken as synonyms for “Enlightenment” and “modern” thought, yet the particular conjunction of these terms has a history full of accidents and contingencies. Modern physics, for example, was not the determined result of the rational unfolding of Newton’s scientific work in the eighteenth century, nor was the Enlightenment the natural and inevitable consequence of Newton’s eighteenth-century reception. Each of these outcomes, in fact, was a contingent event produced by the particular historical developments of the early eighteenth century. A comprehensive study of public culture, The Newton Wars and the Beginning of the French Enlightenment digsbelow the surface of the commonplace narratives that link Newton with Enlightenment thought to examine the actual historical changes that brought them together in eighteenth-century time and space. Drawing on the full range of early modern scientific sources, from studied scientific treatises and academic papers to book reviews, commentaries, and private correspondence, J. B. Shank challenges the widely accepted claim that Isaac Newton’s solitary genius is the reason for his iconic status as the father of modern physics and the philosophemovement.

Book excerpt: This narrative non-fiction series tells the stories of great moments in science as if through the eyes of the scientists and inventors themselves. The stories are told like an adventure, with all the dramas, missteps and struggles along the way, ultimately leading to the 'Eureka' moment of triumph. The books use all the tropes of fiction - dialogue, action, suspense - to tell true-life tales of human discovery and achievement. Readers will discover what happened during these milestones of science - but crucially, they will also be able to imagine what it might have felt like to be at the cutting edge of progress. The narratives are interspersed with short comic strips dramatising significant episodes and boxes to explain scientific concepts, as well as historical information to set the story in a wider context. The end matter contains a timeline, a glossary and an index. In Isaac Newton and Gravity we follow the eccentric scientist as he develops his theory of gravity which will fundamentally alter the way that humans think about the universe and how it works.

Book excerpt: Ever wondered how the great laws of Physics were discovered? Well, not all of them originated inside a four-walled lab. Some of the discoveries had more to them - a fight, a war or an epic tale of adventure. Yes! Newton, a genius scientist, must travel in time to discover the most important laws of Physics, and while doing so, he must also learn how to fight an army of villains hell-bent on the destruction of the universe, befriend some other legendary scientists, encounter strange life forms, which he considered as a figment of his imagination and meet God-totally changing his take on life and spirituality. This is an untold story of how a mere human transformed into the legend that he was. Find out how Newton unravels not only the most famous laws of physics but also some thought-provoking truths of life, the mysticism of death and paradoxes of humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have grown accustomed to the idea that scientific theories are embedded in their place and time. But in the case of the development of mathematical physics in eighteenth-century France, the relationship was extremely close. In Before Voltaire, J.B. Shank shows that although the publication of Isaac Newton’s Principia in 1687 exerted strong influence, the development of calculus-based physics is better understood as an outcome that grew from French culture in general. Before Voltaire explores how Newton’s ideas made their way not just through the realm of French science, but into the larger world of society and culture of which Principia was an intertwined part. Shank also details a history of the beginnings of calculus-based mathematical physics that integrates it into the larger intellectual currents in France at the time, including the Battle of the Ancients and the Moderns, the emergence of wider audiences for science, and the role of the newly reorganized Royal Academy of Sciences. The resulting book offers an unprecedented cultural history of one the most important and influential elements of Enlightenment science.

Book excerpt: Nobel laureate Steven Weinberg has written that "all that has happened since 1687 is a gloss on the Principia." Now you too can appreciate the significance of this stellar work, regarded by many as the greatest scientific contribution of all time. Despite its dazzling reputation, Isaac Newton's Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, or simply the Principia, remains a mystery for many people. Few of even the most intellectually curious readers, including professional scientists and mathematicians, have actually looked in the Principia or appreciate its contents. Mathematician Pask seeks to remedy this deficit in this accessible guided tour through Newton's masterpiece. Using the final edition of the Principia, Pask clearly demonstrates how it sets out Newton's (and now our) approach to science; how the framework of classical mechanics is established; how terrestrial phenomena like the tides and projectile motion are explained; and how we can understand the dynamics of the solar system and the paths of comets. He also includes scene-setting chapters about Newton himself and scientific developments in his time, as well as chapters about the reception and influence of the Principia up to the present day.

And there, Newton became drawn into a battle with William Chaloner, the most skilful of counterfeiters, a man who not only got away with faking His Majesty's coins (a crime that the law equated with treason), but was trying to take over the Mint itself. But Chaloner had no idea who he was taking on. Newton pursued his enemy with the cold, implacable logic that he brought to his scientific research. Set against the backdrop of early eighteenth-century London with its sewers running down the middle of the streets, its fetid rivers, its packed houses, smoke and fog, its industries and its great port, this dark tale of obsession and revenge transforms our image of Britain's greatest scientist.

Book excerpt: John Raymond, a renowned mathematician at the Newtonian Research Academy (NRA), is summoned to solve a symbolic code underlying a large terrorist plot to assassinate a set of world leaders. Instead, he soon finds himself trapped in a game, larger than what appears to be. During the 17th Century, long before he published his works on Calculus, a young Isaac Newton buried a secret that threatened the existence of modern civilization, possibly even his own. An ancient community, believed to have been destroyed centuries ago, rises again in the 21st century to unearth Newton’s secret hidden in a complex Calculus puzzle laid out by Newton himself. Graham Roebuck, the Director of the NRA, discovers the source to the Calculus puzzle in one of Isaac Newton’s personal diaries purchased by his grandfather at the Sotheby’s auction of Newton’s works in 1936. A powerful game of deception unfolds, revealing a dangerous conspiracy that challenges God as the Supreme Creator... “A brilliantly researched theological thriller that merges historical and religious facts into a fictional narrative.” “It is a long read, but the uniqueness of the plot induces mystery right through to the epilogue.” “Thoroughly enjoyed all attempts to decode the symbols and come up with a solution.” “It is always dangerous and controversial to write about real personalities, but the Author’s research is intense and evident.” “Assassinations, Symbols, Mathematics and religious revelations. This plot is a clear winner.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Newton in Early Modern Europe investigates how Sir Isaac Newton’s Principia was read, interpreted and remodelled for a variety of readerships in eighteenth-century Europe. The editors, Mordechai Feingold and Elizabethanne Boran, have brought together papers which explore how, when, where and why the Principia was appropriated by readers in Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, England and Ireland. Particular focus is laid on the methods of transmission of Newtonian ideas via university textbooks and popular works written for educated laymen and women. At the same time, challenges to the Newtonian consensus are explored by writers such as Marius Stan and Catherine Abou-Nemeh who examine Cartesian and Leibnizian responses to the Principia. Eighteenth-century attempts to remodel Newton as a heretic are explored by Feingold, while William R. Newman draws attention to vital new sources highlighting the importance of alchemy to Newton. Contributors are: Catherine Abou-Nemeh, Claudia Addabbo, Elizabethanne Boran, Steffen Ducheyne, Moredechai Feingold, Sarah Hutton, Juan Navarro-Loidi, William R. Newman, Luc Peterschmitt, Anna Marie Roos, Marius Stan, and Gerhard Wiesenfeldt.
