Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The northern cod have been almost wiped out. Once the most plentiful fish on the Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland, the cod is now on the brink of extinction, and tens of thousands of people in Atlantic Canada have been left without work by a 1992 moratorium on fishing the stock. Today, the Pacific salmon stocks are in similar trouble – victims of the same blind, stupid greed. Angry, accusatory fingers have been pointed at various possible culprits for the collapse of the cod – at the Spanish and Portuguese, who for hundreds of years sent ever-bigger fleets to the Grand Banks; at the factory-freezer trawlers, which “vacuumed” the ocean floor for the prized fish; at those inshore fishermen who circumvented the rules governing the fishery; at the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, which is responsible for managing the fishery; at the harp seal, the cod’s competitor for food, whose numbers have exploded in recent years; even at Nature, for lowering the temperature of the ocean. In Lament for an Ocean, the award-winning true-crime writer Michael Harris investigates the real causes of the most wanton destruction of a natural resource in North American history since the buffalo were wiped off the face of the prairies. The story he carefully unfolds is the sorry tale of how, despite the repeated and urgent warnings of ocean scientists, the northern cod was ruthlessly exploited.

Book excerpt: As the last of the northern cod disappeared from the fishing banks of eastern North America during the waning years of the 20th century, more than just fish faced the threat of extinction. In communities all around the island of Newfoundland, thousands of fishermen and their families suddenly found themselves confronted by a similar threat. Servants of the Fish is the story of these people, who are at once the perpetrators and the victims of this event. As he did in his bestselling Riddle of the Ice, Arms employs the drama of the voyage to bring readers face to face with the people and the geography of the tale he tells. It is the tale of a particular time and place. Yet it is also an allegory of sorts--about predators and prey, about greed and denial, and about our collective ability as human beings to destroy natural systems once thought to be infinite.

Book excerpt: The island of Newfoundland and its fishery helped start the American Revolution and were a major sticking point in ending the war. In between, the island proved to be a source of men for the British army and navy, but also a drain on supplies. For the Americans Newfoundland and its fishing grounds were a place where the nascent navy and swashbuckling privateers could carry the war to the enemy's doorstep and hurt the British economy with daring raids on shipping and the island itself. The fight for the fishery was also an administrative fight that would see statesmen like John Adams and Benjamin Franklin use a quiver full of political arrows to secure a place in the cod fishery for their new country over the wishes Great Britain, France and the rest of the European establishment. Even as the Fight for Tom Cod brought about the birth of the United States, it proved transformative to the island of Newfoundland as well. The war caused a population boom on the island and more importantly created a basis for the Newfoundland identity to be built upon.

Book excerpt: Men and boys of Newfoundland's north East Coast always looked forward to the coming of March. It was sealing or swilin' time. Seal meat would give some reprieve to `the long and hungry month of March by which time the family food store was very low. At this time of the year, sealing provided the only opportunity to obtain fresh meat and the pelts brought long awaited cash. Shannon Ryan was bo and bred in Riverhead, Harbor Grace, the one time home of the great sealing industry. He attended secondary school in his home community and later received an education degree from Memorial University. After spending several years teaching in Newfoundland he taught for two years at ranking inlet in North West Territories. In the late 1960's he retu ed to university and later obtained a M. A. in history at Memorial University. He has done extensive research on the Newfoundland seal and cod fisheries and has spent one summer doing fisheries research in Norway. Larry Small was bo and reared in Morton's Harbor, Notre Damme Bay. He killed his first whitecoat at the age of fifteen: the gaff was a dogwood selected from the woods by his father and the hook crafted by the community blacksmith. He attended the one room Methodist school in Morton's Harbor and later took up studies at Memorial University. During his BA at Memorial he came under the influence of the inte ationally known scholar, Herbert Halpert, who inspired him to study for an MA degree of folklore and folklife at the University of Pennsylvania. All of his field research has been in Newfoundland outporting community's where he has done extensive work on various aspects of talk among fishermen. Since 1974 he has been teaching in the department of Folklore at Memorial University.
