Book excerpt: The purpose of this cookbook 'Gourmet's Guide to Authentic African Cooking' is to introduce the art of Sierra Leone cooking to those interested in preparing and eating cuisine around the world. Hopefully, this book will also be used by Non-Sierra Leoneans as a source and guide for preparing foods which are common to Sierra Leoneans but also different and interesting to those seeking to learn the art of Sierra Leone Cookery. Gourmets will find this book fascinating while others will use this cookbook as a guide to traditional, Sierra Leone, African cooking. Great pains were taken to collect and prepare this cookbook with more than four hundred authentic, traditional, Sierra Leone, recipes. It is one of the largest in the world and the only true authentic, traditional, Sierra Leone, African cookbook. Most of these recipes have never been written or published. My grandmother and mother passed them down solely by word-of-mouth. At age eight, I learned to prepare real, authentic, traditional Sierra Leone meals by watching, helping and observing as my grandmother and mother felt the texture and tasted the food 'a pinch of this' and 'a pinch of that' and slow-cooked their meals at low temperature to achieve palatable, lip-smacking and nutritious meals. My passion for preparing authentic, traditional Sierra Leone dishes started at a young age while watching and assisting my grandmother and mother preparing meals from fresh, organic ingredients. Later, I decided to prepare these authentic, traditional Sierra Leone meals from quality, fresh produce. I have modified and transcribed these dishes committed to my memory in well-written and organized format to preserve, promote and share Sierra Leone's rich Cultural Heritage. Adults utilizing these meal-recipes will acquire lifelong cooking skills. In addition, they will be inspired to prepare delicious and healthy authentic, traditional Sierra Leone meals and will be able to pass on their lifelong cooking skills to future generations. Thank you for purchasing this cookbook. Now take your time to read through it and prepare your favorite and healthy traditional meals for your family and friends. Remember, once you have actually mastered this cookbook, the art of preparing exotic-flavored, palatable, delicious and nutritious authentic, traditional Sierra Leone meals will become yours. I wish you and your loved ones a good and hearty appetite!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a lifetime of studying Cuban Santería and other religions related to Orisha worship—a practice also found among the Yoruba in West Africa—Stephan Palmié has grown progressively uneasy with the assumptions inherent in the very term Afro-Cuban religion. In The Cooking of History he provides a comprehensive analysis of these assumptions, in the process offering an incisive critique both of the anthropology of religion and of scholarship on the cultural history of the Afro-Atlantic World. Understood largely through its rituals and ceremonies, Santería and related religions have been a challenge for anthropologists to link to a hypothetical African past. But, Palmié argues, precisely by relying on the notion of an aboriginal African past, and by claiming to authenticate these religions via their findings, anthropologists—some of whom have converted to these religions—have exerted considerable influence upon contemporary practices. Critiquing widespread and damaging simplifications that posit religious practices as stable and self-contained, Palmié calls for a drastic new approach that properly situates cultural origins within the complex social environments and scholarly fields in which they are investigated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guide to a West African Tradition The Art of Fufu is a fascinating and informative guide to fufu, one of the most delicious and beloved staple foods of West Africans. All fufu dishes consist of two parts--the prepared, cooked fufu (which has a dough-like consistency and is made by mixing a plant base with water) and a unique soup that accompanies it. The cooked fufu can be made from a variety of bases, such as yams, shredded cassava tubers, and cassava flour. After the fufu is cooked, it is rolled into small balls, which are then formed into a spoon shape with the hand. The soup is then scooped with the fufu, and the bite is swallowed whole. Just as there are many different types of fufu, there are many different types of soups. Part of the joy of fufu is discovering which flavors pair best together. This colorful book discusses popular ingredients used to make fufu and the soups that go along with it as well as methods of preparation for fufu. The Art of Fufu is sure to appeal to those interested in learning more about West Africa's food culture and one of its most cherished foods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning two hundred years of history from the nineteenth century to the 1990s, Sisters or Strangers? explores the complex lives of immigrant, ethnic, and racialized women in Canada. The volume deals with a cross-section of peoples - including Japanese, Chinese, Black, Aboriginal, Irish, Finnish, Ukrainian, Jewish, Mennonite, Armenian, and South Asian Hindu women - and diverse groups of women, including white settlers, refugees, domestic servants, consumer activists, nurses, wives, and mothers. The central themes of Sisters or Strangers? include discourses of race in the context of nation-building, encounters with the state and public institutions, symbolic and media representations of women, familial relations, domestic violence and racism, and analyses of history and memory. In different ways, the authors question whether the historical experience of women in Canada represents a 'sisterhood' of challenge and opportunity, or if the racial, class, or marginalized identity of the immigrant and minority women made them in fact 'strangers' in a country where privilege and opportunity fall according to criteria of exclusion. Using a variety of theoretical approaches, this collaborative work reminds us that victimization and agency are never mutually exclusive, and encourages us to reflect critically on the categories of race, gender, and the nation.
