Book excerpt: The ‘spectre of populism’ might be an apt description for what is happening in different parts of the world, but does it apply to New Zealand? Immediately after New Zealand’s 2017 general election, populist party New Zealand First gained a pivotal role in a coalition with the Labour Party, leading some international observers to suggest it represented a populist capture of the government. The leader of New Zealand First, Winston Peters, justified his support for Labour as necessary to allow capitalism to ‘regain … its human face’. The new prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, spoke of a kinder, inclusive politics. This book draws on the 2017 New Zealand Election Study to uncover New Zealanders’ political attitudes and preferences post-election. Its authors ask: is New Zealand now A Populist Exception? Through detailed empirical analyses of how populism and authoritarianism affected vote choice, opinions about immigration, satisfaction with democracy and the relevance of gender and indigeneity to these issues, this book finds that New Zealand politics today does not reflect the international trend toward ideological polarisation and electoral volatility. The authors argue that inclusive forms of populism can be pluralist if a leader’s rhetorical approach recognises ‘the people’ as diverse and encompassing. A Populist Exception? concludes that although populism has long been a strong current in New Zealand history, contemporary New Zealand exhibits a moderate form of populism, with liberal and pluralist values in balance with a strong commitment to majoritarian democracy.

Book excerpt: Society and Politics provides an introduction to the essential political ideologies and concepts that have had an enduring impact on the development of New Zealand society. The main topics covered are: sovereignty, social contract and the Treaty of Waitangi; liberalism; socialism; feminism; nationalism, imperialism and racism; neo-liberalism and conservatism; and the contemporary third-way model. Special consideration is given to: poverty and inequality; the rights of children; and superannuation. The purpose of this book is to bring political theory and social policy concepts to life for the New Zealand reader, to highlight the political importance of our intellectual and historical heritage, and to link these ideas to their European and indigenous roots. New Zealand’s political culture has often prided itself on a pioneering, pragmatic and nonideological approach. This book challenges us to rethink that view, illustrating how and why political theory is relevant to us all. This text will be of interest to undergraduate students of New Zealand history, social policy, politics and sociology. The reader will gain a deeper appreciation of the significance, origins and principles of political ideologies in New Zealand, alongside the key figures who promoted these ideas, and their values and social goals. ‘This book is a refreshing antidote to customary works on social policy … Here we have a theoretically-informed piece of critical analysis that purposely casts its net beyond policy to consider society and politics.’ Steve Matthewman, Department of Sociology, University of Auckland

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Work of Richard John Seddon, Premier of New Zealand: With a History of the Liberal, Party in New Zealand This work was commenced two years ago, when Mr. Seddon was taking a very active part in New Zealand's politics; and the intention was that he should contribute largely to the material, so that the work should be, to some extent, autobiographical. Having had many opportunities as a journalist of studying the political history of this colony, and having watched the rise and progress of the Liberal Party, I became well acquainted with Mr. Seddon's career from the time he entered Parliament, in 1879. Besides that, in writing and conversation, he sometimes expressed his opinions on political situations and public men, and spoke of his early battles, giving me a further insight into the view he took of past events and of those that were passing rapidly in front of him. It was early in July, 1904, that I first asked him to allow me to write his biography. He fell in with the proposal at once, and telegraphed his hearty consent in the following message: - Re your communication of the 21st ultimo., I shall be pleased to give you every reasonable assistance. Kind regards and best wishes. R. J. Seddon. I immediately prepared a scheme for the work, and submitted to him a list of questions, which I asked him to answer at his leisure. He replied as follows: - Prime Minister's Office, Wellington, 13th November, 1904. Dear Sir, - I duly received your letter, and have time and again tried to get an opportunity to comply with your request, but pressure of parliamentary business has prevented it. Book excerpt: Exploring the current and historical tensions between liberal capitalism and indigenous models of family life, Ian Kelvin Hyslop argues for a new model of child protection in Aotearoa New Zealand and other parts of the Anglophone world. He puts forward the case that child safety can only be sustainably advanced by policy initiatives which promote social and economic equality and from practice which takes meaningful account of the complex relationship between economic circumstances and the lived realities of service users.
