Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New World and the New Thought As the traveler visits the old shrines and cathedrals of Europe, or the scholar delves among the mediaeval treatises on astronomy or geography, he is continually meeting with conceptions of the world and its creation of a most curious and childlike simplicity. A frequently recurring group in the sculptures, mosaics, stained-glass or missal paintings of the Middle Ages is that which represents the Almighty in human form, moulding the sun, moon, or stars, and with His own hands hanging them from the solid firmament which supports the upper heaven and its celestial waters and which overarches the great plain of earth; and when the work of the six days is finished He is represented as sitting, bent and fatigued, in the well-known attitude of the "Weary Mercury" of classical sculpture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My First Trip to the New World IN presenting to the public this little volume, I feel I am supplying a want felt by many, viz., a short description of a tract of country which far surpasses in the grandeur of its scenery most other places. Few, indeed, who have not heard of the Falls of Niagara, or read of the rapids of the St. Lawrence, the mighty forests of North America, and the vast plains, the Splendid rivers, and the beautiful lakes with which the Western World abounds. But to single out an account of each particular place from the various authors who have written on the subject, would be a task not within the reach of many; and I know of no work published in this country that contains an account of the places which I have in this little work endeavoured to describe. Before I left England for the United States, I was anxious to obtain some information respecting the tour I proposed to take, but after searching in vain through many libraries, I had to content myself with proceeding to America in ignorance of those places I felt a desire to become acquainted with. Respect for Mary had enabled him to endure patiently all the ill-humor of her mother; but was it now his duty to see the peace of his family destroyed by one whose claims were so doubt ful 7 He wavered for a moment, and then again addressed her. Anna, I might say that Mrs. Jones will seek a home elsewhere; that she has no right to expect one here, only as she can bring peace to the household. But, Anna, the law of God forbids us to cast out the widow, and her that has no helper. She must remain. I will wrestle with God in prayer, and he will make the path of duty plain and pleasant before me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Development of the New World, Vol. 23: A History of All Nations Harvard were printed in the catalogue not in the order of the alphabet, but in that of social precedence and those who came highest on the list had the best choice of rooms, and divers other privileges. No one would have thought of such a thing as addressing a. Married lady as Mrs. Unless her husband happened to be an Esquire, and the title of Esquire was as narrowly guarded as the prefix Sir for a knight in England. The ordinary style for the lady whose husband was not an Esquire was Goody, an abbreviation of Good wife. So, too, with regard to dress. Those were the days when the gentleman wore his crimson velvet doublet with point-lace collar, while the workmen dressed in a coarse gray or brown cloth; and among the women the most gaily attired on a Sunday were not the servant-girls. Or consider the ultra-democratic notion of rotation in office. In colonial New England, when you had elected a young man of thirty for town clerk or town treasurer, in all probability you would keep him in that office until he was seventy or eighty. The idea that public offices were like sugar plums, to be evenly divided among all greedy comers, had not entered peeple's minds. If we turn our attention to the patroons of New York, the manorial lords of Maryland, or the great planters of Virginia and South Carolina, we find perhaps even fewer democratic features. Book excerpt: Flamboyant, theatrical and ambitious, Margaret Cavendish was one of the seventeenth century's most striking figures: a woman who ventured into the male spheres of politics, science, philosophy and literature. The Blazing World is a highly original work: part Utopian fiction, part feminist text, it tells of a lady shipwrecked on the Blazing World where she is made Empress and uses her power to ensure that it is free of war, religious division and unfair sexual discrimination. This volume also includes The Contract, a romance in which love and law work harmoniously together, and Assaulted and Pursued Chastity, which explores the power and freedom a woman can achieve in the disguise of a man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New World Order, written by Baptist minister Samuel Zane Batten, is an examination of the state of social and international affairs in the time period immediately following the conclusion of the First World War, and is a plea for a greater degree of socialization and religious influence. The book opens with a discussion of the international community following the Great War. "The world is in a transition period," states Batten in his introductory remarks. The author, being a man of the church, argues that a shared religious faith is necessary to bring the world together in peace. The book is divided into chapters, which individually focus on the rebuilding of the global community, the democratization of industry, the socialization of the nation, the reconstruction of international life, and the church's role in healing after a crisis. The author argues for a form of international government and a breaking down of the barriers created between nations. Batten's socialist and religious leanings are apparent throughout the text. The author pines for an almost utopian society where individuals are global citizens connected by a single religious faith. That is not to say that Batten's work is without merit or is uninteresting. Those interested in counter culture literature with a particularly religious focus will likely find this to be an interesting read. The New World Order is one of many published works by authors seeking to suggest a new path for society. It is an interesting read, if not a wholly practical solution to the problems of the world. Those interested in the subject matter will likely find this book worthy of the time investment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
