Book excerpt: Excerpt from "The New Theology" By a Methodist Layman It has been said that an honest man is the noblest work of God. It has also been said that an honest God is the noblest work of man. Some one has said that in the beginning God created man in his own image, and that man has ever since been returning the compliment, by creating God in his image. A de cision is now being made whether we will continue with the church of our former choice, or unite with those who, without changing their name, have organized a new body. With a view of giving information to such as desire to ascertain on which side the truth lies, we shall present, in as concise a manner as the case will admit, the distinguishing fea tures of the New Theology - comparing them, as we proceed, with those doctrines which have, by way of contrast, been denominated old. For the sentiments of the Old School we shall refer to the Confession of Faith of the Presbyterian church and to standard Calvin istic writers. We think this cannot be rea sonably objected to, even by our New School brethren; since they have never charged the former with departing from the Confession of Faith. For the New School doctrines, we shall make quotations from the professors at New Haven, Mr. F ihney, and various minis ters in the Presbyterian church. We quote from those first named, because Dr. Taylor and his associates, though belonging to ah other denomination, are regarded as the mo dern authors of these speculations; and Mr. Finney, until within a few years past, belong ed to our body, and preached and published most of his sentiments on these subjects be fore he left the church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Theology This book has been undertaken at the request of number of my friends who feel that recent criticisms of what has come to be called New Theology ought to be dealt with in some comprehensive and systematic way. With this suggestion my own judgment concurs, but only so far as my own pulpit teaching is concerned. I cannot pretend to speak for anyone else, and therefore this monograph must not be understood as an authoritative exposition of the views held and expounded by other preachers who may be in sympathy with the New Theology. From its very nature, as I hope the following pages will show, the New Theology cannot be a creed, but its adherents have a common stand point. My only reason for calling this book by that title is that a considerable section of the public at present persists in regarding me as in a special way the exponent of it; indeed from the correspondence which has been proceeding in the press it is evident that many people credit me with having invented both the name and the thing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Christians need practical and accessible theology. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

Our first thought was to have an intro ductory expression from serious chief pas tors of the several evangelical denomina tions. There are such, in every church, who are deeply concerned with the light manner in which the fundamentals of Bible Chris tianity are being revised at the behest of an uncertain modern philosophy. Some have read our advance chapters, and have evi deuced a willingness to lend them such a seal of approval. It is not conceit that has made us avoid this; but, in keeping with the above explanation, a desire that in its first editions the work should be like Gideon's eece of wool, getting responses on the merit or de merit of its pages, without a {borrowed prestige. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Theology and the Old Religion: Being Eight Lectures, Together With Five Sermons This volume consists mainly of the substance of lectures delivered in the Cathedral of Birmingham at the midday services in Lent of this year. The lectures were delivered only from notes, and were not completely reported. They have therefore been written entirely afresh, with amplification and rearrangement. They are now in eight, instead of six, portions. But I have still called them lectures, as they retain the form and manner of lectures. I have added some sermons preached on other occasions. This involves - in the case of the first three sermons - some repetition, which I hope will be forgiven, as I thought that the point of view of each of the sermons was sufficiently different from that of the lectures to justify its preservation; and they amplify and expand points of importance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of the New Testament No one has written on the subject with finer insight and discrimination. The brilliant treatise of Professor Menegoz, entitled he Peehe et la Redemption d'apres St. Paul, has afforded me many useful suggestions. With none of these writers, however, have I been able in all respects to agree. Especially do I dissent from the interpretations given by Wendt and Beyschlag to those portions of the New Testament which relate to the person and work of Christ, and from the presuppositions on which Holtzmann's construction and estimate of New Testament history and theology rest. Appended to the volume will be found a select bibliography which comprises the most important recent literature of the subject. Articles and brochures on minor topics in Biblical Theology, which would be likely to interest only the specialist, have not been included. In accordance with its somewhat general purpose the list is limited to more comprehensive works. A much fuller bibliography, arranged on a different principle, is prefixed to Holtzmann's Lehrbuch. As respects its aim the present work is not apologetic or controversial. It seeks to expound, not to defend. It also recognizes the boundaries between the explicit teachings of the New Testament and inferences which may be drawn from them, however natural or apparently necessary such inferences may seem to be. The limitations of space which were prescribed for the volume have rendered it necessary to bestow careful attention upon the question of proportion and to present the various subjects which are discussed as succinctly as possible. Every chapter has involved a study in condensation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Theology: Thoughts on the Universality and Continuity of the Doctrine of the Immanence of God In Him we live and move and have our being, he was not, as the Athenians said, the setter forth of strange gods, or the author of a New Theology, but the exponent of a truth as old as the world. This was clearly in the mind of Augustine when he wrote Opera, vol. I., p. 12) The thing itself which is now called the Christian religion was really known to the ancients, nor was wanting at any time from the beginning of the human race until the time that Christ came in the flesh, from whence the true religion, which had previously existed, began to be called Christian; and this. Book excerpt: Now Larger Print for Easier Reading In Three Simple Rules, Rueben Job offers an interpretation of John Wesley's General Rules for today's readers. This simple but challenging look at three commands, "do no harm, do good, stay in love with God," calls us to mutual respect, unity, and a deeper relationship with God. This insightful work is designed for individual reading or group study. “Every year I review the three general rules of the United Methodist Church with those who are being ordained. Now I have a wonderful ordination gift to give them in Bishop Job's, Three Simple Rules, to start and deepen the conversation as they enter a new relationship with the church. Bishop Job has described “by attending upon all the ordinances of God” to be to “stay in love with God.” It's a fresh language that speaks especially to long-time Christians and United Methodists.” Sally Dyck, Resident Bishop, Minnesota Area “Three Simple Rules is a new catechism for everyone wanting to follow Jesus Christ. These practices for holy living should replace the membership vows in every church! Don't let the title fool you. Bishop Job writes, 'The rules are simple, but the way is not easy. Only those with great courage will attempt it, and only those with great faith will be able to walk this exciting and demanding way.'” John Hopkins, Resident Bishop, East Ohio Area
