Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Psychology of the Unconscious In this way I hope to make the new psychology, so far as it seems valid, more comprehensible to the student of orthodox psychology, and to lessen the objection to it based merely upon mistaken a priori grounds. For it should be judged upon evidence, and not upon misconceptions as to its inconsistency with a generally accepted psychology. Published in 1912 in German, this translation brings his earliest thoughts on the nature of the Unconscious to the modern reader. In this treatise Jung introduced the concept of the personal and collective unconscious, the latter being a reservoir of universal memories, patterns and symbols shared by all human beings. He also began to explore the role of symbols in mediating between the conscious and unconscious realms, and shifted the understanding of libido from Freud's primarily sexual energy perspective to a broader life force. Although the fully developed concept of archetypes would come later, Jung touched on these primordial, universally recognized symbols that reside in the collective unconscious. This essay, with its emphasis on both individual and shared unconscious content, marked a significant departure from Freud's theories and heralded the basic concepts that would later become central to Jung's analytical psychology. This edition is a new 2023 translation with an Afterword by the Translator, a philosophic index of Jung's terminology and a timeline of his life and works.

Book excerpt: Weaving together state-of-the-art research, theory, and clinical insights, this book provides a new understanding of the unconscious and its centrality in human functioning. The authors review heuristics, implicit memory, implicit learning, attribution theory, implicit motivation, automaticity, affective versus cognitive salience, embodied cognition, and clinical theories of unconscious functioning. They integrate this work with cognitive neuroscience views of the mind to create an empirically supported model of the unconscious. Arguing that widely used psychotherapies--including both psychodynamic and cognitive approaches--have not kept pace with current science, the book identifies promising directions for clinical practice. Winner--American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis Book Prize (Theory)

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Subconscious Remain there longer, our vision becomes clouded, impressions become vague, the memory uncertain; we seem absorbed in close contemplation, and yet but dimly realize what it is we contemplate; we dream and hardly know upon awakening what was really seen and what imagined. At times strange tales are told Of those depths, of curious forms Of life, part Of this world and part sugges tive Of some unreal world beyond. Monsters and sprites and elves are there, who on rare occasions, it is said, disport themselves upon the tops Of the waves, much to the consternation Of those who bring the tale. Ghosts Of our former, or Of our other selves are said to lurk in this night-side of mind, at times reasserting their portion in the con scious life that alone we call our own. As we turn to Observe them, to stare at, them with the waking eye, the cock crows, the dawn of consciousness looms above the horizon we are again awake and the ghosts have vanished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Unconscious, to the Conscious One duty, and one only, lies upon him - to be faithful to the author's meaning. No attempt at literary finish can palliate or excuse the slightest departure from that duty in a work which, however scientific in essence, is necessarily somewhat controversial in form. When to this duty there are added the obligations which the honour of personal friendship involves, faithfulness in rendering the idea becomes doubly imperative. To this all other considerations must give place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unconscious the Fundamentals of Human, Personality Normal and Abnormal In a recently published article M. Bergson con cludes with the following prophesy: To explore the most sacred depths of the unconscious, to labor in what I have just called the subsoil of conscious ness, that will be the principal task of psychology in the century which is opening. I do not doubt that wonderful discoveries await it there, as important perhaps as have been in the preceding centuries the discoveries of the physical and natural sciences. That at least is the promise which I make for it, that is the wish that in closing I have for it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "... these lectures provide an extremely clear, readable, and at times amusing exposition of Jung's theories. In them Jung not only describes his views on the structure of the mind, giving lucid accounts of his psychological types, of the personal and collective unconscious and of archetypes, but also explains vividly his techniques of dream analysis and active imagination and the role played by transference in analytic therapy." -- Charles Rycroft, The New York Review of Books "...Jung was a charismatic personality: and this volume bears witness not only to his erudition and his originality but also to his charm and his persuasiveness." -- The Times Literary Supplement (London) "This, surely, is the most lucid, simple and orderly introduction to the basic principles and methods of the Jungian science of the psyche that has yet been offered to the public."

Book excerpt: An exploration of how the unconscious is formed and functions by one of our most renowned experts on emotion and the brain. This book traces the evolution of the concept of the unconscious from an intangible, metapsychological abstraction to a psychoneurobiological function of a tangible brain. An integration of current findings in the neurobiological and developmental sciences offers a deeper understanding of the dynamic mechanisms of the unconscious. The relevance of this reformulation to clinical work is a central theme of Schore's other new book, Right Brain Psychotherapy.
