Download or read book On Tennis written by David Foster Wallace and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Infinite Jest and Consider the Lobster: a collection of five brilliant essays on tennis, from the author's own experience as a junior player to his celebrated profile of Roger Federer at the peak of his powers. A "long-time rabid fan of tennis," and a regionally ranked tennis player in his youth, David Foster Wallace wrote about the game like no one else. On Tennis presents David Foster Wallace's five essays on the sport, published between 1990 and 2006, and hailed as some of the greatest and most innovative sports writing of our time. This lively and entertaining collection begins with Wallace's own experience as a prodigious tennis player ("Derivative Sport in Tornado Alley"). He also challenges the sports memoir genre ("How Tracy Austen Broke My Heart"), takes us to the US Open ("Democracy and Commerce at the U.S. Open"), and profiles of two of the world's greatest tennis players ("Tennis Player Michael Joyce's Professional Artistry as a Paradigm of Certain Stuff About Choice, Freedom, Limitation, Joy, Grotesquerie, and Human Completeness" and "Federer Both Flesh and Not"). With infectious enthusiasm and enormous heart, Wallace's writing shows us the beauty, complexity, and brilliance of the game he loved best.
Book Synopsis A Hundred Merry Tales by : William Carew Hazlitt
Download or read book A Hundred Merry Tales written by William Carew Hazlitt and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hundred Merry Tales: The Earliest English Jest-Book Here may be some, who will attach value and interest to the singular old volume, now first reproduced in exact imitation of the original, on account of the casual mention of it by Shakespear in one of his plays; but I hope and think that many more will welcome its appearance on another and higher ground, and will become of opinion that, where a solitary copy of such a relic as the earliest est-book in the national tongue of England is only to be found in a foreign repository, and is liable to destruction at any moment, the survival, not of its mere substance alone, but of its very identity, in the shape of a facsimile, is one of those minor duties, which we owe to sue ceeding generations. In the good former days, a gentleman who did his friends and the public the favour of reprinting a curious old book, was re garded as a sort of benefactor by a few who knew a little about the matter, and by the greater number, who knew nothing, he was considered a person of elegant tastes and of liberal disposi tion for he usually engaged in the speculation on his own responsibility. The case is now altogether altered, and any one who proposes to give to the world a new edition of an old book or tract, is in peril of being received as a Frenchman receives the news of his third child, unless he can make out a pretty strong plea for his proceeding. He must bring his justification in his hand. The burden of proof is upon him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jest Book: The Choicest Anecdotes and Sayings The compiler of this volume has felt the importance of his task, and diligently sought how to distinguish true wit from false, the pure gold from Brummagem brass. He has carefully perused the Eight learned chapters on Thoughts on Jesting, by Frederick Meier, Professor of Philosophy at Halle, and Member of the Royal Acad emv of Berlin, wherein it is declared that a jest is an extreme fine Thought, the result of a great Wit and Acu men, which are eminent Perfections of the Soul. Hypocrites, with the appearance but without the reality of virtue, condemn from the teeth outwardly the Laughter and Jesting which they sincerely approve in their hearts and many sincere virtuous Persons also account them criminal, either from Temperament, Melancholy, or erro neous Principles of Morality. As the Censure of such Persons gives me pain, so their Approbation would give me great pleasure. But as long as they consider the suggestions of their Temperament, deep Melancholy, and erroneous Principles as so many Dictates of real Virtue, so long they must not take it amiss if, while I revere their Virtue, I despise their Judgment.
