Book Synopsis Empire's Nature by : Amy R. W. Meyers
Download or read book Empire's Nature written by Amy R. W. Meyers and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completed in 1747, Mark Catesby's Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands was the first major illustrated publication on the flora and fauna of Britain's American colonies. Together with his Hortus Britanno-Americanus (1763), which detailed plant species that might be transplanted successfully to British soil, Catesby's Natural History exerted an important, though often overlooked, influence on the development of art, natural history, and scientific observation in the eighteenth century. Inspired by a major traveling exhibition of Catesby's watercolor drawings from the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, this collection of interdisciplinary essays considers Catesby's endeavors as a naturalist-artist, scientific explorer, experimental horticulturist, ornamental gardener, and early environmental thinker in terms of the interests held by the various, overlapping communities in which he functioned--particularly as those interests related to the British colonial enterprise. The contributors are David R. Brigham, Joyce E. Chaplin, Mark Laird, Amy R. W. Meyers, Therese O'Malley, and Margaret Beck Pritchard.

Book Synopsis Kalamazoo And How It Grew by : Willis Frederick Dunbar
Download or read book Kalamazoo And How It Grew written by Willis Frederick Dunbar and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of Kalamazoo County’s early white settlers were fur traders from England or New York. The remainder came from Pennsylvania and Maryland. After 1845 the number of foreign immigrants increased rapidly especially with the coming of the Hollanders in 1850. The growth rate of the county’s population reached its height between 1845-1860, when almost 8,000 newcomers settled there. That growth rate was not exceeded for 50 years when, between 1904-1920, the population grew to 214,000, quite an increase over the 1860 figure. Increased immigration, better transportation, and the appearance of diversified industries all played a role in Kalamazoo County’s growth. “Every community has its roots in the past. Its people live in the present and look to the future, but their way of life and their patterns of thought are conditioned by their heritage. A widespread understanding of that heritage is essential in order that progress may be planned wisely. “Hence, it has seemed desirable to gather into a single volume the story of Kalamazoo’s growth from a tiny fur-trading post in the wilderness to a modern metropolitan center.”—Willis F. Dunbar

Book Synopsis Memories of Dziadka: Rural Life in the Kingdom of Poland 1880-1912 and Immigration to America by : stephen szabados
Download or read book Memories of Dziadka: Rural Life in the Kingdom of Poland 1880-1912 and Immigration to America written by stephen szabados and published by Stephen Szabados. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of my grandfather – a very ordinary man. It covers his childhood in Poland, his immigration, and his life in America. He was a typical Polish immigrant, who immigrated to make a better life for himself. Compare his life to your ancestors. Use his life for clue that may help you understand theirs. My hope in writing this book is to share the information about the daily lives of the Polish people living in the rural areas of Poland. The book also describes some of the reasons for leaving Poland, the trek across Poland and Germany to the ports, the voyage across the North Atlantic, arrival in America and their life in their new country. I used my grandfather as the central figure in this book but this is not his biography. I used details of my grandfather's life but added accounts of other people to tell a complete life story. My grandfather was not a person whose accomplishments would be in history books. However, his life is an example of a typical Polish immigrant. I felt that tying the information to one person would make a more interesting story and easier to show the impact of various events had on our ancestor's life.

Book Synopsis Yateley in the Great War by : Peter J. Tipton
Download or read book Yateley in the Great War written by Peter J. Tipton and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were fewer than 500 houses in Yateley in WWI but with Aldershot, Farnborough, Camberley and Sandhurst close by, this Hampshire villages response to the call to arms was more prepared than most, and punched above its weight.Using contemporary evidence from many sources researched by our local history team, the Yateley Society recreates the impact of the War on our predecessors. The story of the men who left Yateley to fight -- territorials, regulars, volunteers and conscripts -- is told alongside that of the battalions of Kitcheners New Armies training in trench warfare on Yateley Common. At the same time, in the three private houses forming the Yateley Military Hospital, Yateley women of all ages were tending wounded soldiers. With its intimate glimpses into village life, this book, will fascinate anyone with Yateley connections. The names of many families in the village of 100 years ago are here, while for recent newcomers with perhaps a Victorian or Edwardian house there may be clues to the history of your homes. With its many illustrations and maps, this exploration of the social network, and social consequences of the Great War on a small community in North East Hampshire has interest for historians and general readers alike.
