Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New England States, Vol. 3: Their Constitutional, Judicial, Educational, Commercial, Professional and Industrial History The records and writings of the members of the Maine Historical Society since 1860, and the celebration of the laying of the cornerstone of Fort Popham in 1862, have brought the Popham colony into much greater prominence than ever before and led to a long and somewhat heated controversy, unfortunately tinged with theo logical coloring, between Maine and English church writers on the one side and Massachusetts and Presbyterian writers on the other, as to whether the Popham col ony or the Plymouth colony of the Pilgrims in 1620 should properly be regarded as the true historical beginning of New England. Every volume shows three generations of those who came before 1692. Although more than a century has elapsed since the publication of this monumental work, it remains the standard to our day. We do not mean that new information has not been unearthed or that the work is free from errors, but Savage had just the peculiar qualifications necessary. He was so persistent in gathering data and so conservative in his use of them, that a statement made on his authority bears great weight. This work has the whole of New England for its field. This is volume 3, covering the surnames K - R.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States, Vol. 3: Land Birds From Sparrows to Thrushes The editor of a posthumous volume is under a handicap in endeavoring to express the feelings of the author of the book to the many individuals who assisted in its preparation. Fortunately, I had come to know Mr. Forbush rather intimately during the several years immediately preceding his death, when it was my privilege to act as his assistant in pre paring material for these volumes. Edward Howe Forbush was a'man of great attainments in the fields of economic ornithology and of wildlife conservation, but he was also a man of great modesty. While he was continually consulted by scientists of the highest standing as well as by the veriest tyros in bird study, he was always ready to give full credit to those who had contributed in any way to his fund of information. It was his intention to acknowledge his indebted ness to all those who had assisted him, in the preface of the third volume of The Birds of Massachusetts. It is not possible for me to name all those to whom Mr. Forbush felt indebted, but all who assisted him and whose work is not herein acknowledged, will have the satisfaction of knowing that they have made a contribution to a work of real value, which has added to the knowledge and pleasure of countless individuals. First to whom Mr. Forbush tendered grateful recognition was his wife, to whom he was married in 1882 and who survives him. Throughout the long period of their life together, Mrs. Forbush not only encouraged him in his chosen work, but was of much assistance to him in many ways. Although crippled by illness in recent years, she spent many long hours in reading and revising his manuscript and in painstaking correction of the proof of The Birds of Massachusetts, and her criticisms were always constructive and helpful. Book excerpt: For this stunning new volume, photographer William Hubbell has turned his lens toward New England's ubiquitous stone walls. Beginning with the basic geology of the region and why New England has so many darned rocks, he presents a chronological overview of the varying styles and methods of wall building, and includes conversations with six contemporary wall builders. The result is a surprising and refreshing look at stone walls and at the history of New England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accents of English is about the way English is pronounced by different people in different places. Volume 1 provides a synthesizing introduction, which shows how accents vary not only geographically, but also with social class, formality, sex and age; and in volumes 2 and 3 the author examines in greater depth the various accents used by people who speak English as their mother tongue: the accents of the regions of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland (volume 2), and of the USA, Canada, the West Indies, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Black Africa and the Far East ( volume 3). Each volume can be read independently, and together they form a major scholarly survey, of considerable originality, which not only includes descriptions of hitherto neglected accents, but also examines the implications for phonological theory. Readers will find the answers to many questions: Who makes 'good' rhyme with 'mood'? Which accents have no voiced sibilants? How is a Canadian accent different from an American one, a New Zealand one from an Australian one, a Jamaican one from a Barbadian one? What are the historical reasons for British-American pronunciation differences? What sound changes are currently in progress in New York, in London, in Edinburgh? Dr Wells his written principally for students of linguistics, phonetics and English language, but the motivated general reader will also find the study both fascinating and rewarding.
